Michael Kelly Firefly 5-String

By Mr. Chris

Comments about Michael Kelly Firefly 5-String Acoustic-Electric Bass:

I purchased this bass a few months ago. Some fellow band mates and I decided to try out the acoustic "thing". I didn't want to spend a lot of money just to find out that we didn't (or did) want to continue, so this bass fit the bill. It sounds pretty good unplugged and plugged, BUT the low B has much to be desired unplugged and plugged...not real beefy and it does not sound quite as bright as the EADG strings. The body is quite BIG, so it has a tendency to howl(feed back) when in a live situation. I tried using my Eden Nemesis 410 combo and it was just too loud. The bass couldn't handle it. I ran it through a Roland Cube 100 amp the other night and couldn't run the (bass) volume much past about 6 (or a little past half volume) without it howling. I also had to place the amp fairly close to the floor just to be able to use it. Other than that, the neck feels real good, plays pretty good, and the tuners work real well. The construction is sound and the inlays in the neck and on the body give it a little class. I only wish this model came in black like the other models do. Overall I would say it's a pretty good value...for an entry level / beginner piece.Just don't expect to use it in any situation where you need much stage volume.

Comments about Michael Kelly Firefly 5-String Acoustic-Electric Bass:

The sounds that come out of this bass are simply amazing. It's hard to believe that an acoustic bass of this price can produce such rich overtones in the lows, and highs that aren't thin and bright. However, like everything, there are always things that could be improved upon.Simply put, this bass is a catch-22 because everything good about it is thrown off by something else. The strings are amazingly close to the fretboard in such a way that playing is almost effortless. As a consequence of this, if one tries to play loud enough so that anyone besides yourself (and perhaps a group of quiet listeners), you get an annoying amount of "fret buzz". It becomes annoying mostly because you can't "jam" with an acoustic guitar, and play without fret buzz. But what? It comes with an acoustic pickup, so that you can amplify the beautiful sounds that come out of your acoustic bass. So the wonderful thing about the pickup is that it actually works, and works good. The sad thing is that it also will pick up any other sounds you make (such as knocking on the body, your fingers sliding on the strings, or your fingers "hammering" down on the strings). And catch-22, you bought an acoustic bass so that you don't need an amp, correct? But of course, it's doubtful you can find a more beautiful sounding acoustic for this price.

Very Effective, Sweet Sound

Comments about Michael Kelly Firefly 5-String Acoustic-Electric Bass:

The sound is sweet indeed. The low B-string sounds brutal and beautiful at the same time. The action is very good, too. The only problem is that the G-string is a weak on the sustain to the other four strings. If you just want to jam with your friends and just want to practice a lot, definately get this one, but get something more high end for recording. All in all, a bargin and will help your ear training.

Awesome Acoustic

Comments about Michael Kelly Firefly 5-String Acoustic-Electric Bass:

Many of the acoustic basses I've tried were a bit "wimpy" on the bottom end. This puppy will knock your socks off. Very well built and great tone plugged and unplugged. Could use an onboard tuner though...

Comments about Michael Kelly Firefly 5-String Acoustic-Electric Bass:

I have tried several other acoustic/electric 5 string basses and as far as value goes, this bass gets my applause. Sounds great as acoustic and what a range of sounds plugged up. The overall construction and materials are supurb.
