Mean bass, great sound

By Bass Freek

from New York

Comments about MTD Kingston KZ 5-String Bass:

I've had this bass for about 2 years now. I made the transition from 4 to 5 on this bass, and I'm never going back. I couldn't fathom finding another bass that plays the way this does for the same or a lesser price. I love how the action can sit nice and low (I set my action at 2/32" on the bass side and 1/32" on the treble and still no buzz. Fretwork was done cleanly, and consistently. All I had to do to make it my own was throw on a block of quartersawn purpleheart between the pickups to control attack, but thats just for my playing style. I've played Ritter basses that still don't do what this does for me. All in all, I don't think I'll ever let this one go, and it will only become number 2 if I acquire funds for an MTD American.

Love it!

By JDX

Comments about MTD Kingston KZ 5-String Bass:

Before I begin to gush let me first state that products seldom live up to my expectations. This bass has met or exceeded my expectations in every area! I am primarily a guitar player but I have owned or played regularly Fenders, Tunes, Conklins and Musicmans. This one takes the cake. The tone is very clear and articulate. Using the eq and blend knobs you can change from extremely (obnoxiously) bright to smooth 'no attack' thump. I have large hands so some things like slapping on any but the top most string has always been an issue for me. With this beauty I can slap the B, E and A strings. The action is awesome, the tone is incredible, could it get any better? Yes, it also looks gorgeous. I have the 5 string tobacco burst. Fit and finish are perfect. Did I mention it is very light weight? I have played basses several times the cost of this one but they are a distant second to the MTD Kingston KZ. Thanks Mr Tobias!

great mid price bass with big time features

By IanRc

from Puerto Rico

Comments about MTD Kingston KZ 5-String Bass:

I wanted to replace my original Tobias Killer-B made in the early 90s with something modern that would still retain the amazing sound that all Michael Tobias Basses have. I tried many other bases and none felt like the Killer-B Did. I finally found it with the MTD Kingston KZ-5. The feel is very familiar and very balanced. I love the wood covered pickups that remind me of the bartolinis that my other bass has. The action right out of the box was great and the look is very expensive. The only gripe is that the Bass at full open position, sounds like my other bass at almost 3/4. But the mid and high are perfect! The sound is very natural and the slaps sound like they should.I like the natural sound so much that I removed all my procesors and went stright to the amp!

Tobias Quality at a Great Price

By Yarbicus

from Northwest

Comments about MTD Kingston KZ 5-String Bass:

Anyone that knows Michael Tobias' basses knows that they are the best of the best. I always wanted one but the ones coming out of Gibson (Tobias brand) are pretty bad. Now, with MTD, he is doing what many others are: body and neck made overseas but everything put together in the States. All I can say is "Wow!"The only reason I gave 4.5 for features is that the pickups are only a 9v system rather than the more standard 18v these days. Frankly, I don't mind, but there is less raw output. Don't worry; the tone is all there and that is all that matters. If you want a bass that sounds and plays as well as it looks and feels, this it!
