Comments about MTD Kingston Saratoga 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

Let me start by saying this is a great feeling, nice sounding, easy playing bass. That being said...

This is cheaply made. They did a pretty good job with what they have, but it's not a high quality bass. The tuners are sloppy, the fit and finish marginal. MTD uses a funky plate on the front of the bass to cover the truss rod adjustment screw. That plate wasn't a perfect fit, so they colored part of the wood under it with a black magic marker so it wasn't as visible. It's pretty tacky. The frets are rough in places. The sound is good, but you'll need to spend some time tweaking it to get the best sound. This is very sensitive to pickup height, don't get the pickups too close to the strings. When you get it right, it really sounds great. I love the zero fret, I love the feel of the neck, and I love the wider string spacing. For those buying their first 5 string, this is a good option. The string spacing is similar to most 4 strings, and the asymmetrical neck feels great.

The major low-priced budget brand of guitars and basses has less expensive instruments that are probably better quality than this MTD. However, I don't regret this purchase, as this bass feels great in my hands, and almost plays itself. If the price is right, pull the trigger. You'll like how it feels and plays.

Comments about MTD Kingston Saratoga 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I really fell in love with this bass from the start. Plays and sounds great and I can't believe it's made in China. The craftsmanship is better than most basses I have tried and that is several. I had a feeling that anything with Mr. Tobias' name on it would be with the price even if it was an import and I was right. Don't fall for the Epiphone version. Save up some more and get one of these. Well worth the price.

Best bang for the buck of any 5 string out there

      By Jason Collier

Comments about MTD Kingston Saratoga 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

This is my second 5 string (my first was a Schecter Stiletto, which is also a great bass). If I could change one thing, it would be to add one inch to the scale length. That being said though, the B string is not flubby. I strung mine with medium gauge LaBella flats so those are a high tension string.
The best feature of this bass is the asymetrical neck. It's the most comfortable neck I've ever played. I have the rosewood neck. It also has the Buzz Feitin tuning system; 2 passive J style pickups - the output is hot enough where you would swear it was active electronics. I also can't believe how lightweight this bass is.
If I was blindfolded and handed this bass, I would guess it should cost over twice the price. It is incredible quality and sound for the money.
      You will love this bass.

      Great bass....but

Comments about MTD Kingston Saratoga 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I love the sound of the bass. The zero fret makes a difference in how you can play certain combinations and has certainly spoiled me on future purchases where I'm going to be looking for that zero fret but there are very few basses that offer it. I ended up returing the bass because of the sharp edge of the frets. I couldn't put up with it and didn't think that I should have to file down all of the frets. If it was just one or two, no problem but the quality isn't there in the fret board. However, the rest of the bass if fantastic!
The zero fret makes a big difference and makes the bass a winner. The passive pickups were noisy at times, but I'm told that's the nature of the beast and this is the first passive pickup bass I've ever really played so I'm going to say that's me. The tone and playability was fantastic.
The edges of the jumbo frets are SHARP which cut the in inside of my fingers. This lack of detail killed the base for me. I'm not the only person that has complained about this, too. Maybe they'll fix it in the future as this was a killer.
Very good value but it has production flaws.

Comments about MTD Kingston Saratoga 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I've played guitar for over 30+ years and recently switched to bass. I played several different brands and came upon the MTD. These basses have an amazing tone, as well as great play-ability. Matched with GK amps they are truly a sound to be reckoned with!! The fret board is a little wide, but after a while you get used to it.

I did have an issue with the rear cover missing screws when it arrived, and the tuning keys seem a little loose, but otherwise I am completely satisfied with the quality and sound.

I have been a Michael Tobias fan for years and with this price I can't complain!!
