To sum it all up, if you want attention and see those jaws drop, get this bass, it's unlike any othe bass out there. The only people who don't like these, are the ones who don't like aggressive tone. Most people who I demoed this bass to, were blown away by it's sound. It's a very loud bass. So if you want volume, a good b string feel, extreme comfort in a 5er, and want to whack that audience in the face, get this bass, you won't regret it. If you like Flea's bass sound, you'll like this bass, it' does all that and more. From punk to funk to death metal to jazz to progressive, anyway you take this bass, it just works, and it works amazingly well. Haven't found a 5 string I like more than this yet, and I've played just about every major name out there: Ibanez, G&L, Warwick, Fender, Gibson, ESP, Aria, Yamaha, Dean, Schecter, Rickenbacker, Spector, Modulus, and brian Moore, and Cort. None of these offerings have a 5 string I like more than Musicman's Stingray5.
Got one of these babies as a trade for my Warwick Corvette 5 string passive. Turns out it's an early 1991 model year, and has the same AlNiCo humbucker that the 2008 and up Stingray 5s have. If you like the uber aggressive sound that the stingray 4 string is known for, but want it in a 5 string variant, get this bass now. It's mean and aggressive to the point you can punch someone in the face with your sound. The late 1992 to 2007 Stingray5s all had a ceramic bucker which resulted in a more tamed down tone closer to a jazzy sound. The AlNiCo (short for Aluminum-Nickel-Cobalt) humbucker is what gives the Stingray the glorious center of attention sound. Some reviewers I noticed said the Jack is flakey on it, never had a problem on mine as old as it is. Bass also features a 3 way switch for the humbucker configuration, which is parallel-same as a standard 4 string Stingray, single, similar to Jazz pickup, and series which has a nice muffier big sound great for distortion. Controls feature master volume, Bass, Mids, and treble.
If you want quality, this is the go to bass. It's as solid as a rock and has a very nice feel to it, also somehow perfectly comfortable to play.
Can't really beat this. High quality selected woods, hand crafted and assembled in USA, with the stiffest feel between neck and body, equating in a superb B string feel, unlike any other B string I've played.

Well this bass does come with a good pre-amp and a three-way pickup selecting device, but does lack in quality and durability. It is American made, which is the only reason I can see why it would cost 1000+. You would not pay half the price if they manufactured these in Asia.

Comments about Music Man StingRay 5 5-String Bass Guitar:

This bass is incredible. My first bass was a Fender American Jazz Bass and it was great! But it didnt have that low end town. I happend to play a music man 5 string one day and I decided to order one. It has the best low end tone, with the nicest neck I've ever played on. It also has an incredible bridge with the best humbucker. One of my favorite parts are the EQ's. You can literally get any tone out of this bass. Its crazy! Buy this bass now! Its worth so much more than your paying! You will not be disappointed!!

    The Famous Stingray

Comments about Music Man StingRay 5 5-String Bass Guitar:

This bass is great. Stuctural flaw in the jack, but it is a simple, easy fix. This a great bass and worth the money for sure. You'll never be disappointed.
Ah yes, the famous and admired by many Ernie Ball MusicMan Stingray Bass (5). This is hands down one of the best pieces of equipment that I have ever owned. I've tried out a lot of different brands, Fender; Schecter; and Gibson, and nothing comes close to the tone, quality, and value that the owner receives from this bass. I've owned this bass for about a year now. As iconic and popular this bass is, I have found one fatal flaw that no one likes to talk about. The output jack is notoriusly awful. In discussion with other owners of this bass, I have found that within an average of three months the jack starts to go in and out. However! This problem is easily solved by buying and installing a new jack. Simple. Despite this flaw, the value and quality you receive from this product is extraordinary. I'm a sole supporter of the MusicMan from here on out.
I don't want to give a nine, but the jack is just so bad. But, a simple fix.
    Solid tone. Solid frame.

    Nothing comes close.

Comments about Music Man StingRay 5 5-String Bass Guitar:

I think this is the best factory-made 5 string bass on the market. Nothing comes close. I've been playing bass since '97 and have tried out many basses and gears. Nothing beats Stingray along with Apmpeg 810 cab and SVT4 or Classic head. While on tour I had other musicians come out to me just to tell me that they were amazed with my sound. I actually saw at least two other bass players getting their own Stingrays after hearing me on stage. I recently got Fretless Fender J and I think Fenders are the only instruments that are comparable with MM. Well, no wonder, since they all are Leo's designs.

    Excellent bass guitar

    By Reno-EjNAT

Comments about Music Man StingRay 5 5-String Bass Guitar:

I bought a used one recently (Feb/2011)and a new one about the same time. The used ones serial # is E19---. It was made in the year 2000. Its almost 12 years old. The new ones G string was too close to edge of the fretboard (felt wierd to me), and it was not as loud as the 2000 model. The tone was richer on the 2000 model. I returned the new one. Were I play at, I have had problems with noise/buzzing. My GK 700RBII, Ampeg b2r, Lakland skyline 5501 bass, Fender Jazz deluxe, Jazz Standard all buzzed. I sold everything except the Musicman Stingray 5 year 2000 model, I picked up a Markbass LM III. Because of the Stingray 5, I am *FINALLY* buzz free. This bass is so loud I only have to run one of my Avatar sb112 cabs. With my other guitars and amps I needed 2 cabs.

    smooth as butter

Comments about Music Man StingRay 5 5-String Bass Guitar:

Bought my first EBMM StingRay 5 about 8 months ago. It's somewhat larger than my last bass but it's as smooth as butter. The action is nice on this guitar and the sound uniquely Ernie Ball. I have had more compliments on the tone of this bass than any that I have ever owned. It has a 3 band active e.q plus dual humbuckers with a 5 way switch. The switch allows you to chose between the rear or front pickup only, both pickups or split the pickups which allows you to dial in any tone needed for any type of music. You owe it to yourself to try one before you buy your next guitar.

    Best Bass for the Money

    By tcstx

Comments about Music Man StingRay 5 5-String Bass Guitar:

I have never seen quality in an instrument that I have in this guitar. I know own two of these and the tone is simply unbeatable... Quality in the little things is superb.. You have to play this bass to appreciate the "little things"... For the money, this bass kicks the crap out of everything I've ever purchased... if you buy this guitar, right out of the box - it's set and ready for stage - no setup and no luthier work - this guitar is superb right from the factory...

    Brilliant piece od art

Comments about Music Man StingRay 5 5-String Bass Guitar:

I got a translucent gold with maple fingerboard, the MM looks awesome and sound as you could expect from a expensive piece of art. I have a Fender Jazz 24 V and they sound very different. the playability of the MM is way better than the Jazz. The beauty of the MM StingRay 5 makes you stare at it without blinking your eyes.

Comments about Music Man StingRay 5 5-String Bass Guitar:

I've been playing bass 4 15 years. All styles metal, rock, jazz, and R&B. The SR5 is the best rock bass there is end of story. Cuts thru the mix with out being harsh. Tone controls and switching can go from county thump to Flea slap to Korn mid empty to Tool growl. I've never had a problem yet in the 5 years I've owned this bass. The 9 volt gets changed one every 6 months of playing 20 hours or so each week. The neck is the easest to adjust that ever seen. I've owned warwicks, Fenders and Ibzs that were all nice basses. They all stay in their cases now.
