Amazing value from a top notch bass builder.
I am a working musician. I have owned many basses over the years. The 55-01 is my favorite all around bass. I play a lot of weddings and corporate gigs and you have to play a variety of styles and the 55-01 covers it all with ease. I have an older model with the Bartolini MK's and the Bart preamp. I understand Lakland are using their own pups and preamp these days.My 55-02 has the Lakland pups and pre and they are quite good as well. However I prefer the barts.
For the money or hundreds more you won't find a better bass on the market.
Put together very well. I also own a 55-02 and to be honest I prefer my 55-01.

I can go from playing Lady Gaga to rocking AC/DC with this bass.
Put together very well. Excellent finish. Top shelf hardware.
You will not find more bass for this money.

Plays great

One of the best playing basses I have played. I did send it back just because the headstock and neck had some dents and dings.

Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-01 5-String Bass Guitar:

I love this bass. I have been playing for 25 years and have owned many basses. I had a high end Fender American Deluxe 5 Sting and this thing actually plays better. I could not be more happy given the money I spent. The Fender was about 2 times the price of this bass. I have the maple neck which feels great. The only thing is this neck is bright and has a lot of treble. You can adjust that so it is not a big deal. I play it with Ampeg amps/speakers and gallien krueger heads for my pro rig.

Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-01 5-String Bass Guitar:

This bass is amazing right out of the box. I read some reviews on here and expected some buzzing or less than professional electronics but I have to say I am thoroughly impressed with this affordable offering from Lakland (super deal on Cyber Monday). Before I even plugged it up I was intrigued with the tone. Some instruments just have that sound and this is one of them! A natural growl that fits like a glove with the natural distortion on an Ampeg amp...But this animal can calm down and produce angelic tones that just might bring a tear to your eye thanks to the amazing versatility provided by the 3 band knob eq and pick-up fade knob. I have used this beauty in Worship services at church as well as recording some really heavy Black Sabbath-ish tunes. In case you can't tell, I'm a fan. One great ax that I'm glad I took a chance on.

Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-01 5-String Bass Guitar:

I bought a 55-01 "Limited" without even playing one first. I made my choice by what I have read here and elsewhere. narrow at the nut, wide at the bridge and string through body, 35" scale - improves all the strings in my opinion, Everything I was looking for in a 5 string bass, with a beautiful trans blue finish on a curly maple top! Awesome playability, great build quality, great looking...junk electronics started buzzing on day 3!!! I have to play it in passive mode, EQ'd and compressed with a Boss ME20B to kill the annoying buzz. still waiting for my replacement wiring under warranty!!! Don't want to pay big $$ for 'real' bartolini! might try Carvin. The pickups are weak in the low end for fans of the basslines ssb4 passive soapbar like myself. If you buy one of these, have money set aside for at least better wiring. Hence 3.5 for quality! I'd still might buy another one despite this, because everything else about it it is superb!

Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-01 5-String Bass Guitar:

I don't know if Lakland changed the electronics on this model or what. When you crank the treble or volume to max the noise is unacceptable. When you crank them both together it is simply god-awful. To think that they allowed this out the door is shocking. So did I return it? No! I upgraded the pickups to Bartolini MK5CBC's and what a difference. Clarity and tone are now great. Still tooo much noise. The MK-1 pickups were just totally weak. I'm going to pull the preamp and change to ???? anything. Probably a real Bartolini preamp. So I'm saving the body and throwing the rest away, man I much be rich! I realized the potential of the Bart soapbar style pickups before I bought this, but couldn't imagine this much trouble. With good Bart pickups and preamp this bass would have been golden. (And will soon be) Maybe they'll go back to whatever they were using for electronics before. The body is solid. The finish is great. Little scratchy on the fret edges. Love the tuners. The nut looks like it will need replacing sometime in the future. Great battery box.

Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-01 5-String Bass Guitar:

I traded in a Fender P-Bass for a Lakland 55-01 - mine is a 2001 model which was in mint condition. Since aquiring this bass it has replaced my Spector Euro 5 as my go to bass. I only play the Lakland now. I can get any sound I want out of this thing - anything from really deep and warm to bright and shiny. The 3-band EQ is just awesome and the push/pull active/passive switch is a great feature. I love having the option to boost Mids, something that I could never do on my Spector. The only thing I was skeptical about was the 35" scale and broad neck - I gotta say that for me, this is much more comfortable to play than a standard 34" scale 5 string with 17mm spacing like my Spector. A lot of people hype up the low-B of the Lakland 5 strings; the hype is well deserved! My Lakland has the stock MK1 Bartolini pick ups (Korean made). I actually really like them, they're not as hot as the EMG's in my Spector, but thats ok. I don't think I will swap the MK1's on the Lakland, at least not anytime soon. I was always the type of guy who was a little weary of basses made in Asia, just because I've played a couple and compared them to US models and was never happy with the them. That went completely out the window with the Lakland. The craftsman ship is great, I doubt I would be able to tell any difference from a 55-01 and a US made Lakland. If you're looking to upgrade your 5 string and don't want to blow $2000 on a Warwick or a Musicman, you really gotta try this bass.

Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-01 5-String Bass Guitar:

I played an L2500 for years - had to sell it, replaced it with this Lakland. It can't replicate the deep growl of the G&L, but the neck plays like silk, the intonation is better than the G&L, the controls are much easier to use and remember, it's got through the body strings and enough wood so that you can feel it your belly, but it's lighter and for me more managable than the G&L, which is a big, heavy ax, and the workmanship is impeccible. The one downside is that the pickups seem to be on the weak side so I'm missing the BIG G&L sound just a bit, but Pandora helps out. Not looking back because for me the smoothness and playability of this bass make it a keeper.

            Former 4-stringer

            By Anonymous

            from Undisclosed

Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-01 5-String Bass Guitar:

My main concern in buying this (or any) 5-string was the fact that I've never owned one. I've been a 4-stringer from day one and wasn't sure how easily I would make the transition. The 55-01 quickly put my concerns to rest. Maybe you?re asking the same questions I did: Is the fretboard really that wide? Yes and no. It?s quite narrow at the nut, but widens as you go up. This also affects string spacing. The spacing starts with a tight, more modern spacing at the nut, and ends up with a more traditional spacing toward the octave. But the neck itself is surprisingly thin, so reaching the B-string isn?t a long stretch, though after fret 12 it?s a bit difficult to reach and almost impractical to use. How different is the 35? scale? The difference is noticeable (especially when you go back to your 34? 4-string), but not enough to affect your playing. If you have fat fingers like me, it?s nice to have a little more room on frets 5-12 (where I live). Overall, the neck will give your hand a workout, especially if you have smaller hands. But it doesn?t take long to get used to it, and it?s quite comfortable once you do.Overall, the 55-01 is an excellent bass. I agree with all of the great things you?ve already read about it. And it?s hard to imagine that this is just the ?starter? Lakland. I still love my Geddy Lee 4-string, but I can?t put down my Lakland.

I've had my new Lakland 55-01 for about 3 weeks now and I'm still blown away every time I pick it up! The action is super low, but doesn't have excessive fret buzz. The sound, with just a touch of compression on my Line 6 Low Down 175, is amazing. I have been playing a Peavey bass for years, and it was great for what I paid for it, but from now on I'm a Lakland player! Pick up this bass! I don't think you'll do better for the money with anything else!

Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-01 5-String Bass Guitar:

After careful research both online and in various music stores I purchased a Lakeland. Some of the characteristics I notice are great piano like tone and sustain from the 35 inch neck. The option to of through body string set up was a nice touch. The neck is smooth and surprisingly thin. For the funky players out there, the string spacing is very nice! The neck also sports graphite reinforcement to aid in keeping the neck as flat as possible. Fit and finish are very high quality. There is a nice tonal range from the dual Barts. It can go from warm and thick to bright and poppy very well. The weight is decent and not top heavy. There is something to be said of going with a company who specializes in producing high quality basses. Lakeland seems to have taken the best ideas from other basses, made them better and put them altogether into one bass. I play mine through a SWR and the combination does quite well for my application.

Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-01 5-String Bass Guitar:

The 55-01 has exceeded my expectations in all categories. I've been playing bass for 35 years. I've had the opportunity to play just about every production bass that's out there. The 55-01 rates with the very best of them! I'm especially impressed with the set-up. I didn't have to do any "tweaking" at all! I'm playing through a Carvin R600 (bridged) and an Acme "Low B-2" cabinet. The tight B string on the 55-01 really gets the most out of this rig.

Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-01 5-String Bass Guitar:

My first 55-01 arrived with a defective preamp, but the replacement sounded amazing out of the box! Such great feel for a 5-string, no sloppy B string. Very bright sound, but I got awesome house sound with everything centered and the treble rolled down just a bit to take off the edge. As the strings wear in it might warm up a bit, but I'm really happy. The action is nice, not too low and not at all high, great balance for slapping or tapping. My only complaint is that the frets are pretty sharp all the way down the neck, maybe due to Central Oregon humidity (or lack thereof). If I get them dressed I'm confident it would be perfect overall.

Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-01 5-String Bass Guitar:

The 55-01 isn't a bad bass at all for one in this price range. It has a modern tone compared to a Jazz or Precision bass. Considering it has what many consider a subpar preamp, and pickups, with the Mk1, this bass has surprisingly good tone. The active circuitry bypass to use the bass in passive mode is a bit misleading. It works fine as long as the battery doesn't die. if the battery dies, you cannot hear the bass in passive mode. That to me, defeats the purpose of having the ability to go passive with it. The 35" scale length can make the first few frets seem like a bit of stretch if you have small hands, but overall, it's a predominantly comfortable neck to play. One con to me was the fret work. The fret edges were somewhat sharp after it arrived. Lakland's customer service is also top notch. I had a minor problem with mine develop shortly after it arrived. They were extremely fast to return emails, and phone calls, and the turn around time from shipping my bass to their factory in Chicago, to it being back in my hands was no longer than one week. My biggest complaint though is not with the bass itself, but with Musicians Friend, as they do not seem to carry them in all the available colors Lakland offers them in.

Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-01 5-String Bass Guitar:

For this being Lakland's bottom of the barrel budget line bass guitars, it is extremely well built, and has a solid tone. It's construction is far better than most others in its price range, and can compete with more expensive models. The neck is very comfortable, but the 35" scale could pose challenging if you have smaller hands. The 55-01 has a more modern tone, and the B string rings out with piano like clarity, as do the other strings/notes. Though the bass sounds good, the MK1 pickups and MK1 preamp are the basses weak point, and the bass could be made to sound a lot better with the right mods in those areas. Mine had a lot of fret buzz when I got it some months ago, but that is easily remedied by doing a setup on it. Another drawback, is Musician's Friend did not have it in the color scheme I preferred or with a rosewood board.

Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-01 5-String Bass Guitar:

The 55-01 Skyline 5 stringer from Lakland combines ease of play with a solid punch across the whole range from low B to high F. Picking up this ax is like putting on an old shoe...it just feels familiar from the get-go. On board preamp provides a large pallet of tone to work with. I can use this instrument for jazz, latin, and funk styles. It is a great buy.

Very good feel and comfortable to play. Even though the volume button doesn't work until maxed out, it is very good for the price.

Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-01 5-String Bass Guitar:

Lakland has taken the stigma of Korean manufactured "knock-offs" and blown it away. This thing drips with quality. Fit and finish is perfect, balance is good, materials are excellent for a guitar in this price point. I would buy another.
