While the pots are flawed along with a bad fret and a weak neck pickup, this is a good bass that definitely conquers the beginner category. I would, however, purchase the LX405 which has more features and a 35" neck I believe.
I have had this bass for 2 years. I own the older P/J style 5 string. It's got plenty of features for what you pay for. Tuners work fine and can keep it in tune for a long session and a couple days afterward. Plastic nut, not worth upgrading. Wish the neck was 35". Though the neck is bolt-on, it's cut in pretty deep which helps with the resonance and sustain. After raising the pickups, I can get a deep sound with a slight growl, sounds pretty good for such a cheap bass. Bridge and truss are easy to set up. The pots are a little scratchy but they work. The treble seems to work fine but the bass doesn't seem to make a difference.
This is a pretty darn good bass. It needed a setup, which anyone with a couple Allen wrenches and a screwdriver can do theirselves, just watch a how-to on Youtube. Not sure what the body wood is, the LX405 is basswood so I'm assuming this is too. Like I said earlier, the pots aren't great and the pickups sound like a higher priced squire or a cheap fender, not too bad. The 22nd fret on the D string is a little short so that note doesn't really come out. Fret ends are fine, not smooth, but they don't protrude from the fingerboard. The B is floppy. I bought a set of Rogue .130s and it's a lot tighter than the .125 Ernie Balls but I would recommend some .135s. It plays very well once set up. The strap button fell out but it was easily fixed with a toothpick and Elmer's glue.
While not a perfect or great bass, it's definitely better than a lower priced Squire or Epiphone. It's a great value.

Opened the outer box and then inner box, which was corrugated cardboard 1 ply thick, no reinforcement at top or bottom with Styrofoam or additional cardboard. Box was like a gift box where the top covers the bottom, which masked the fact that the lower box was torn apart at the bottom, and a shipping label was used to cover it.

The base was wrapped in thin white foam, and when I removed it the body was chipped on the bottom with abrasions across the back, one of the tuners was missing a screw, and two of the pods for the tone and volume were missing. It looks like the box gave way in the manufacturer's or Musician's Friend's warehouse (inspection sticker from manufacture leads me to believe the latter)the bass fell out and was somehow drug or pushed across the floor on its back, then re-boxed and shipped to me. Got a return authorization and it's on it's way back ASAP. Will try one more time with another order, but so far of the 5 Rogue guitars and basses I've ordered, only the 2 acoustic electrics and Six string bass were keepers on the first try.

OVERALL NOT VERY GOOD

By Mike

Pros

Cons

  • Flat Sound
  • Fret Buzz

Best Uses

Comments about Rogue LX205B 5-String Series III Electric Bass Guitar:

I got this because i wanted a 5 string bass.
    PROS
i have to say the bass is very light, easy on the shoulders, not terribly balanced, the long fret board gives you three octaves which is pretty cool. no flaws in the finish or major problems.
    CONS
Buzz. Buzzbuzzbuzz. the bass itself is not uncomfortable to play for me, but almost all the low end strings get a bad buzz, and a buzz on the open b, e, and a. The strings it came with are awful but this is to be expected. The set up it came with isnt terrible but if you cannot set up a guitar than i suggest getting this one set up first. Pickups are poor quality.

Bass is very poor quality, but you get what you pay for. Musician's friend was very nice to deal with and refunded my money no problem.
If your looking to play or just mess around for fun do yourself a favor and spend a little more and get something you'll be happy with in the long run. You'll be happy you did.
This bass isn't worth it if you got it for free.

Comments about Rogue LX205B 5-String Series III Electric Bass Guitar:

This is my second one of these. Actually, the other is the previous "Series II" version with a P-J setup and was my first-ever 5-string which I've gigged with nearly 4 years. I purchased this later one on kind of a whim, since it was listed as "used, condition 4" (for less than half a c-note!!) and I figured, worst case, it could be a source of repair and project parts. When it arrived I was very pleasantly surprised to open the box and find a bass in "as new" condition. The only issues seemed to be neck back-bow (loosening the truss rod a scosche fixed that), loose hardware (tuner bushings, output jack nut and control bushing nuts), and a very, very slight twist in the neck. In spite of that last thing, it is still quite playable, and being so, this one finds a select spot in my line-up as my go-to substitute contingency back-up spare auxiliary stand-in bass.

Comments about Rogue LX205B 5-String Series III Electric Bass Guitar:

When I got it, it had a ridiculous amount of fret buzz, but managed to fix it almost completely by rising strings, now it rarely buzzes.

The volume control only work as on/off, but there are controls for each pick up.

It is still very fun to play, with these minor problems, and would recommend it for performances too.

Delivery was fast, on time, not perfectly packaged, but good enough, and was not damaged in any way.

Got this delievered today from MF. Hardware loose, needed tighting up. One volume pot defective in a weird way (when volume turned all way down, sound goes back up). Bad fret buzz on G string at 2nd and 3rd fret. Truss cover difficult to remove as screws are directly underneath strings. Had to loosen strings off to remove cover. If your looking for an inexpensive 5 string, I recomment you take a look the Dean Edge 09 5 string. I own a Dean Edge 09 4 string and it is a decent instrument.

Comments about Rogue LX205B 5-String Series III Electric Bass Guitar:

I wasn't expecting much from something so low cost, but it seems to play just as good as my friend's Ibanez SoundGear bass. There is minor fret buzz and I will eliminate that when I get it on my tech table to set up the intonation and action properly. Guitars rarely come from MF setup correctly. I am a guitarist, but got a bass to write some bass lines for my music. This will do nicely.

Comments about Rogue LX205B 5-String Series III Electric Bass Guitar:

The build quality and appearance of the bass seems quite nice. It arrived with the truss rod too tight resulting in bad string noise. However, it adjusted up nicely with the exception of one high fret that took a little filing. The bad news is that the output is quite low and the tone is weak, especially on the B string. Perhaps heavier guage strings will help (it comes with light guage strings) but Im not expecting a miracle. Unless you're really broke, spring for the 405 or a fender squier 5.
