This bass plays well. Feels good in the hands. It has a C shaped neck with tight string spacing. The frets are pretty level and the neck is good and straight. No buzzing with the action set medium and digging in fingerstyle. The body shape and contouring make for comfortable playing, strapped on or over the knee. Weight is average.

Playing unplugged it sounds a bit nasal, and has ok sustain.

Plugged in: First thing I noticed is that the volumes on mine don't kick on until about an 8th turn, and they don't fade in from silence, they come on partway up the volume scale. I don't know if this is the case with all of these models, but searching for an answer I found other people reporting the same issue.

The blend of the two pickups does yield a good variety of tones. unfortunately, they are all a bit scooped and it sounds like something is missing. The bass and treble are spoken of as "boost only" but if you look at the specs, all the way down is a 4db cut. from center position, (roughly, no detents) the preamp is voiced enough that it doesn't sound passive, so I wouldn't call it transparent by any stretch. With the treble all the way cut and the bass boosted enough to drown out the sibilance, it sounds muddy.

Playing overdriven bar rock through a big cabinet in a room with bad accoustics, it sounds as good as anything else, and it's comfortable/ergonomic, and looks cool, so what the hell.

I picked this bass up because I heard so many good things about Spector from online sources. Maybe the hype is accurate for the NS/Euro/USA lines, but not for these. In a nutshell, the build quality is excellent, but the electronics are subpar.

An amazing bass, nothing better than the Tone-pump EQ. I've played many basses, owned many. Played through old Ampeg's and newer Mesa's. This bass sounds amazing on all amps. My favorite EQ, it's so hard to find a bass with individual pickup volume. I've heard some people put down the fact that it has individual pickup volumes, I find it be a great tone shaper, dial back the neck volume just a hair and it becomes a very gritty tone, with great lows, and bright highs. Perfect for playing death metal. Neck is very fast, the locking bridge is also a nice addition to a great bass.

Wonderful upgrade bass. For weekend giggers, church group musicians and the like it's probably the last bass you'll buy.
A bass doesn't need much in the way of features. As a guitar player I'd have liked a pickup selector switch, but it's not hard to get used to independent volume controls.
Flawless Korean construction. You may see some reviews from a few years back that indicate some issues with electronics. I'm pretty sure those glitches have been long since solved. The Slate Grey finish is considerably darker than the advertising pictures would indicate. The top is darn nice for the price.
Even at the regular street price this Spector is a good deal. The only downside is it doesn't come with a gig bag or case.

I went to a music store to try out some basses in the 500-600 range. I went originally looking for a good Ibanez, but when I saw this bass I tried it out first. I immediately loved the tone of it, compared its low and high end to other basses and they couldn't even come close! I bought it on the spot. Its a really great bass, and its sound is more "polished" going into the amp and doesn't need excessive amounts of EQ. Its low end is deep and round, and doesn't sound muddy like other basses in its range. I wish there was a more versatile EQ on the bass itself, but its sound makes up for it. It plays really well, and its harmonics are clear. I dont think I'll need another 4-string bass for a LONG time. Amazing value!

I only write reviews for products that I either love or hate. With this bass, it's the former. I bought this bass 5 years ago as an upgrade to my Squier J-bass and have never looked back since. I have used this baby for both recording and live performance and it never disappoints. The tuners are high-quality and strings rarely need re-tuning, the bass' body is curvy and sits nicely on my belly, but most importantly, you can have all types of tones you want using the EMG pickups and on-board EQ adjustments. From deep low boom, attacking mids, to twangy highs, you name it. This is by far the best 4 string bass I have ever played for the price range. In fact, forget about the price range, this bass is really high quality and versatile. My only complaints are: 1. out of the box, the action was a bit high and the frets need some polishing. But, many new basses need some set up anyway. 2. in agreement with previous reviewers, the electronic sound overwhelms the wood sound. 3. again, as other reviewer commented there is no master volume knob, so you have to adjust the volume of the neck and bridge pickups independently. Nevertheless, these are things that you can work with. In short, give this bass a try and you'll love it.

Originally a Schecter was my first choice as my second bass, but then I played one of these and was totally fixed on it. The neck is fairly thick, but still plays fast, and has a nice profile and weight to it. The satin finish plays like silk; there is NO friction. Since its rock maple, its obscenely solid and rigid, so it seldom needs adjusting. Solid astymmetrical 5-bolt too.Electronics (EMG SSD, basically EMG Hzs but something tweaked specifically for Spector + TonePump Jr. preamp) wonderful pickups that get any tone you want if you fiddle with your amp's EQ. I find that the Spector's preamp is more balanced than the Schecter's so you won't find yourself always having to fight for say a good fingerstyle tone without it getting too squonky. But most importantly for me, the harmonics are wonderful and shine through nearly as loud as a regular note without any compression added. One other thing that I've found with a lot of Spectors is that the bottom end is just so well defined. It's not muddy, but it doesn't sound like you rolled off all the bass. This even holds true on this bass. Though I WOULD like a 3-band onboard EQ, seeing as you can buy an instrument with one in the same price range, but thats just me being in the habit of keeping my amp's EQ the same.Spector's curved bodystyle is an absolute pleasure to play, as it somehow makes the body feel half as light, at least when sitting. Some people find it a bit quirky, but I can't think of any ergonomically designed body I prefer. The maple top is absolutely gorgeous, and if I recall, uses the same lumber from their Euro-series (also applicable to the neck) despite being assembled in Indonesia.I think the only legitimate flaw would be that like a lot of basses in this price rage, the electronics speak more than the wood; which is really more applicable to ALL basses in this price range.This thing is an absolute bargain too. The only way you MIGHT get a better deal, is if you find something used. Otherwise, if this is your first bass, expect to use it for a long time. You won't want to replace it.

I wanted to lay to rest my Hamer Cruisebass and needed a replacement, so this bass was my first choice. I am very satisfied. You can't go wrong with all the features for it's price. Many people say that these basses are a gateway to the more expensive Spectors. And it's very true. The bass has a very bright output, so it really cuts whether you play slap bass, pick or fingerstyle. Of course you can work the tone down, and it still cuts through. I gave a 4.5 just because I had to make some adjustments to the truss rod and bridge. Other than that, the bass was ready to gig out of the box!

The low action and fast neck is almost like cheating; it a very playable instrument. The sound is awesome if you're ok with it sounding completely different a Fender or Musicman. On this bass, the sound begins and ends with the strings.Features: You dial in the pickup volumes separately, no master volume (- 1/2 point).Quality: The insides of my tuners rattle/in general, the tuners while adequate, do show signs of being cheap in general (- 1/2 point).While you may never need to upgrade, this instrument will give you the playability of much more expensive bases at a starter price. Danger: this is a gateway drug to the more expensive Spectors which are just spectacular.

i just got this bass in the black cherry and it is truly a beautiful instrument. i've always wanted a spector and thought i was just settleing for this because of the price. until i plugged in and played it. it is by far the best bass i've ever played and sounds incredible through my hartke combo. the action was perfect right from the store and the neck is smooth and very fast. with the emg pickups and easy adjustability you can get any tone you need from this bass. i definetly got alot more than i paid for when i got this bass and i could'nt be happier.

This bass is worth easily twice as much as it is listed for. The action is amazing right out of the box and easily adjustableif you dont like it. The emg's sound amazing and the active tone controls give you just about any sound you want. You can have clear resonant highs and booming dark lows at the same time with a few turns of a knob. My only issue with the bass is possible feedback. T play through an ampeg ba115 usually and if the treble past 5-6 gives a huge buzz through the tweeter. perhaps its the amp, but its not a big deal. You can just turn the treble down on the bass or amp and its problem solved. I got mine discounted because it was christmas time and the factory messed up on the flamed maple top. I own the "slate grey" but its basically black with EXTREMELY subtle grey stripes. BUY THIS BASS
