I was wrong. I loved this bass when I first got it (after having it set up to my liking). The sound & feel was much better than I expected. Here's the problem: when the bass arrived the strings were way too high off the fretboard. I had someone set it up just right for me. Then 2 months or so later I pick it up & the strings are all the way down. So bad that it wasn't playable. The neck jumps out of adjustment whenever it feels like it. I have owned several basses over the years(Yamaha, Peaveys, Spector, etc.) I've never had a bass do this before. I'll just call it bad craftsmanship, poor quality control, whatever. The guy who set it up for me said he got rid of his Squier for the same reason. I still have it, but it's pretty useless to me. I've since bought a Sterling by Music Man Ray 34 (more money, but much better all around). Bottom line: stay away from this unless you like adjusting your bass more than you like playing it!

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass IV Active:

I have 11 basses including a custom-made and a couple that are vintage. THIS is my favorite bass right now. It has a limited tonal range, but one which really cuts through the music. The front and rear pu's go from fat to growl and the neck is flawless. The ebonol fingerboard provides a smooth feel and a tight response. I cannot believe this bass is 300 bucks. It's almost unfair that anyone just starting out can have a bass that is high end professional quality. Where was this bass 20 years ago!? Kudos to Squire. You have officially eclipsed your big brother.

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass IV Active:

I have never found a bass that is equal to this one. I play classical cello as well as electric bass, and I demand an exprressive quality from my instruments; this bass completely delivers. I can dial in any sound I want just with the active pickups, and the ebenol fretboard facilitates faster shifting. This is an excellent bass.

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass IV Active:

I bought a slightly used all black Deluxe Jazz 4 string bass 8 months ago, and really like the way it plays and sounds. I did find out that Rotosound strings sound horrible on this bass! GHS Boomers are the way to go on this bass. I can say that once you put the right strings on this bass, it sounds like a million $$$ no doubt. I suggest that you get the all black version in that it is an absolutely knock-dead great looking bass! This bass is worlds better than the Fender MIM Standard Basses.

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass IV Active:

Rarely would I buy another bass that is the same make and model. However, I had some gift certificates along with other types of certificates from this site and decided to use them to get another bass. I own the black version of the Active Deluxe 4 string and it is the best bass I have owned until I bought the Sunburst version of the Deluxe Active Jazz Bass. This bass plays better than its Black counterpart of which is nothing short of dying and going to bass guitar heaven!

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass IV Active:

This bass is an incredible value. It sounds better than basses that cost 3 or 4 times more. I thought I' d give it a shot, not sure what to expect. As soon as I played it, whoa! It has that funk, pop, slap sound that I really only got from a Music Man before (it was borrowed & I had to return it). I have played a few higher end basses. Being a sax player mainly I don't have high-end money to spend (not on a bass, anyway). The sound of this thing is killer. Big, fat tones. And, absolutely perfect for slapping & grooving. I will be selling my Peavey Cirrus BXP (nice, smooth playing bass) because this is the only 4 stringer I need. I had it set up by my bass guru, put on some DR Fatbeams, and now it's the perfect bass for me. I have the 5 stringer on order & if it sounds & feels like this I'll be selling my Cirrus 5 string, too. Squier has done it this time. If you're not concerned about the name on the headstock, try this bass. You will love it!

OK, I'm not a real bass player, I'm still learning. But this Squier Bass fit my hand and seemed to have better action then all other basses in its price range and higher priced basses. I've tried several brands and bought this one.

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass IV Active:

I've been playing for almost 10 years and everytime I would walk into a music store, I would immediately go to the expensive basses (I own a Fender P and Jag bass). Well this time I happened upon this bass, played it, and was blown away! I purchased it right away. It has an incredible range of tones from the active pickups (not just a preamp like other fenders), it can go from super gritty to big n thumpy and everywhere in between. The finish on the sunburst model is beautiful and the neck with ebonol board looks and plays incredible. It beat my Precision and Jag for main bass. The moment you get a chance, try this bass. Even if you don't buy it, just playing it will make the trip to the store worth it.

          strange fingerboard, but otherwise awesome!

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass IV Active:

I don't know why there isn't a rosewood fingerboard on this instrument. The ebonol fingerboard looked strange and felt stranger. If I decide to buy this instrument, I will get used to it, not a big deal really, it just surprised me.Other than that, I was extremely impressed! I'd played Schecter and Ibanez basses with active pickups - basses that cost much more than this one, and those sounded worse. The tones I could get with this bass, wow!! REALLY amazing!Other good points - finish was quite nice, and the neck felt pretty good. I tend to like Precision basses better, at least partially because of the necks, but the neck on this Jazz bass felt better than the necks on other Jazz basses. I don't own the instrument, so cannot comment on durability, but the sound and the overall feel and appearance.. outstanding!!

I've played a 1966 Jazz bass for over 3 decades and have always found it to be my favorite bass. I wanted a jazz with actives but couldn't see myself spending the money required for an American Jazz bass with actives...I don't play enough any longer to justify the price. So, I bought this one and it's been great! I love the way it plays, looks, feels and sounds. Plus, what you get for the money you spend is unbelievable. If you want a very good bass for a very good price, this is for you.

This is the best sounding bass I have ever played. The high mass bridge and Ebanol fretboard are a big upgrade. The active pickup set is an ideal compromise with nuanced tone control that does not push my power amp into clipping as have others. After a few minutes adjusting saddles and setting the intonation, this bass was perfect and easily outperforms far more expensive models I have owned. Right out of the box, I placed this guitar on a large dining room table, then plucking a string and the whole table resonated. It is as if this instrument were alive....unbelievable!

I got this bass on a stroke of luck, I wanted one for a long time but didnt wanna pay the price of the Fender. When I got this guitar is was perfect in any way. I own quite a few basa guitars for different ganres of music when I play and I find myself picking up this one more then any other basses. Eq is very awesome and can dial in pretty much for anything I wanna play. Anyway. This is a great guitar for the money and black one looks apsolutly awesome. This guitar made me look at the Squier brand in a whole different way. I now have 5 of the Squier basses and none of them disapoint me at all.And the funny think is I got them all for a price of a single American deluxe bass. Get one you might be nicely surprised just as I was.

I own a German Warwick limited edition 4-string Thumb (#29/100) among other expensive basses and over the years have purchased nothing but high-end instruments. I always considered Squier to be a cheap beginner's brand. Was I ever wrong! I was going out of town for two weeks and picked up a black Deluxe Jazz Bass IV Active with the idea of keeping it at a friend's house where I was visiting. That way, I would have a bass I could mess around with whenever I was out that way. When I got home and plugged the bass in to check it out, I couldn't believe my ears. The tone was gorgeous across a wide variety of settings and the slap switch feature was very impressive. And the bass felt so good to hold and play. I have always been attracted to fingerboards made of exotic woods, but I fell in love with the synthetic Ebanol board right away. Long story short, I kept the Squier at home and took along another bass. I have stopped using my other 4-strings for the time being because I am enjoying this bass so much. If you are looking for an affordable great sounding, great feeling bass, don't get hung up on poo-pooing the Squier brand like I once did. This is a serious bass and a blast to play.

Comments about Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass IV Active:

I bought this as an open box item at a significant discount and half expected to end up returning it when I placed the order. I adjusted the saddles and set the intonation in a few minutes, the neck and frets were already perfect. The pickups and circuit produce absolutely zero hum at any volume. I would conclude that this model will eventually become a classic. What I saved, buying the Squire, allowed me to spend the savings on the components of a rack system and Hartke HiDrive speakers. I am blinking in disbelief. that this Squire Jazz, turns out to be simply the best sounding bass I have ever played. I ended up with an exceptional instrument and a pro rig for the price of an average bass guitar...go figure.
