I bought this bass with the intention of replacing the pickups and electronics and fixing anything that needed it. I replaced the pickups with Fender Original '62 pickups, the volume pot with a Bourns premium guitar audio taper pot, the tone pot with a Fender no-load audio taper pot, and the tone cap with a .047uF paper in oil cap. I also shielded the bass completely with copper tape and grounded the pickup pole pieces. For the price I have an absolutely fabulous P-Bass
.
If you want to fix it up, this a wonderful bass. If you want to play it like it is, the pickups are limiting.

WARNING: There are 5 versions of the Affinity P-Bass - black, blue, red, white, and brown burst. The red, black, and blue versions have 14 hole pick guards and the brown burst and white have 13 hole pick guards. My 13 hole brown burst was "crafted in China" and I think the black, blue, and red might be made in Indonesia. ****The pick guards are not standard Squier or Fender and a Fender pick guard will NOT cover the control cavity (and the holes don't line up). If you want to replace the pick guard, you are looking at a custom job!
It's a nice, clean, and simple bass. The closed tuners are nice and stay in tune and the bridge is simple, straight forward, and solid. I only had to loosen the truss rod 1/2 turn and the setup was perfect. It even has nice strings if you like round wounds.
The construction of the bass is top notch. I don't know what the finish is on the neck, but it is clean and smooth. The fit and finish of the neck is impeccable. The body is three piece alder and the paint job is beautiful (I got the burst finish). The neck pocket was clean and perfect (I was expecting paint and shims). The neck/body joint is tight and I haven't noticed any dead spots on the fingerboard.

The electronics are less impressive. The mini pots are by a manufacturer I'm unfamiliar with. The tone is a 250K audio taper and the volume is a 250K linear taper. This means the volume is really on or off with very little adjustment. A Fender '62 P-Bass pickup is magnetic pole pieces with wire wrapped around them; these pickups are steel rods wrapped in wire with a single magnet underneath touching the pole pieces. I found these pickups turned muddy when I played with moderate force.

I noticed a popping noise like a shorted wire and found that it came from touching the frets when not touching a grounded part of the base! This bass has no shielding whatsoever!
I bought this bass as a project bass and could not be happier with the construction (electronics aside).

This was my first bass and as a new bass player it looked cool, Olympic White Body and white pickguard. The hardware is mehhh, and the pickups are barely on the ok side. The sound was thin. But then as I really got into pickups and hardware I absolutely had to change everything ( bridge, tuners, pickups, pots, and wiring). But the craftsmanship is above decent, so if you're willing to put 400 more bones to make it a cool bass then buy it, or if you're brand new to bass this is really good.

Comments about Squier P Bass Electric Guitar:

other than the name on the headstock, you couldn't tell this wasn't the more expensive models. I was shocked at how well the guitar was setup right out of the box. Plays and sounds wonderfully. I've bought much more expensive bass guitars and had to spend a lot of time setting them up to play well. This one plays well right out of the box.

Comments about Squier P Bass Electric Guitar:

This is just a very nice Bass guitar for a really good price. I am mainly a guitar player but needed a decent bass for recording in my studio and the occasional jam. This bass sounds great and plays well. I had to do a little tweaking of the truss rod and bridge to make it play and feel comfortable for my playing style but after about 20 minutes it was good to go. This is a surprisingly nice instrument for the price.

Comments about Squier P Bass Electric Guitar:

I'm a guitar player, picked this up for recording purposes. Action is good, easy to play, has good clean tone through the bass amp I bought, neck is smooth and very playable. Overall, a great purchase for the price. I have three other Fenders (Strat, Tele, and CD60 acoustic), plus two Fender amps; Fender makes a great product and this is no exception.

Comments about Squier P Bass Electric Guitar:

About three years ago I started a program for local musicians who wanted to play but had noone to play with and/or noone to play with. I called it the Downtown Jam Project. One of these basses was donated to the project by a friend of mine. Although people would bring in other more expensive basses, this one would get picked up and played a lot more often. A whole lot more! Since then I bought it from that person and use it when I have to play bass in church. In fact, other players in my church regularly borrow it to play in church. This bass is one incredible instrument for the price. The one that I own has kind of become an icon in our community . It plays good and sounds good, what more could you want?

Like many before I wasn't sure if this was a good buy or not but I couldn't be more satisfied. Please don't buy one and put high-end pickups and such in it because it's fine the way it is. While I haven't yet quite got on board with flat wound strings I do suggest trying a string mute at the bridge made from foam or something similar. While this idea wasn't appealing per say, it did bring out more fundamentals while suppressing some of those unwanted overtones and harmonics that can sound kind of out of place in certain songs. After adding the string mute I couldn't find any song (classic or current) that it didn't blend right in with. Again I'm glad I purchased this bass now.

Comments about Squier P Bass Electric Guitar:

too many clueless folks are followers and get sucked into the peer pressure nonsense and marketing b/s that this music/guitar/bass industry has been spewing out for decades. these "all-knowing gurus" will have you believe that it takes a high end modern or vintage instrument to get the great "correct tone". too bad. gems like the squier classic vibe guitar series and this squier p-bass get lost in the hype and rhetoric, and are passed over. in its current 2014 build, the squier affinity p-bass is a fully pro bass that can do it all on the stage and in the studio, period. a solid alder body that's well built and cleanly routed, full sized quality pots, tuners that are super smooth and hold well, an excellent bridge, and good strings. the only thing that *might* require modding is to replace the ceramic mag based split pickup for a more vintage flavored one with alnico rod mags - yeah, an electric's tone is in the engines and support circuit. today (11/2014) mf has it on sale for 140 beans/shipped. geez louise, what are ya waiting for, just get the dang thing and ... smile - know one can see yer instrument in an mp3 and a little sandpaper can remove that squier label. :)

I play guitar now but I wanted to revisit my days as a bass player without spending a lot of money . I've owned good ones before- Fender P and Jazz, Music Man Stingray, Gibson EB3- and I'm having fun playing this one. There's nothing fancy here but it seems well made, fitted and finished. The tuners look a little wimpy but work smoothly with no slop. The controls are quiet and smooth and the shielding must be good- no ac buzz at all. I'm very happy with this purchase.
