I liked the fit and finish very much, and the bass is very light (the lightest of 8 basses I currently own). No damage or quality issues to report.Right from the box, the setup was playable but not to my liking. I had to lower the action and intonate it; I replaced the stock strings with DR High Beams, and WOW! This bass plays and sounds incredible and can be adjusted to sound like either a P bass, J bass or an awesome combination of both. Add some boost from the active circuitry and the bottom end fills out very nicely even with medium/light gauge strings.I'm not happy with 2 things about this bass though:1) The balance is not great - the bass is a little headstock heavy and will drop if I let go the neck.2) The active boost works great on the E and A strings, but thins out on the D and G strings.Overall this is a great bass for the money. Quality and sound are above average for a bass this affordable, it sounds and plays excellently; plenty of presence and tone. Hats off to Squier again for another quality bass guitar. Worth the money - check it out!

Great Idea gone wrong

The first bass had flaws in the finish and the second was assembled poorly. The action on both was very high and bridge was mounted way out of center.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special:

If you're looking in this price range, or anything under 500, you're done looking.

I had to sell my American made Fender P-Bass and wanted something to replace it that was great for rock and metal, but also extremely versatile. I wanted decent quality, not something for a beginner but not something for an expert with tons of cash either because I'm primarily a guitarist who only plays bass when I'm writing/recording for my songs.

I'd narrowed it down to a Squier VM PJ after a sales rep turned me on to the solid reputation of Squier for basses, and an Epiphone EB3 or Thunderbird 4. I gave this Jaguar a go at a music shop and was blown away by how immensely it made the previously mentioned models sound utterly limited and boring, especially since it's the cheapest of all.

The pickups and eq give me the smooth speaking voice all the way to crisp metallic crunch to a full powerful punch/thump tone for slappin - in a few ways it's actually better SOUNDING than my USA P-bass was (just not as good FEELING).

The key is the bass boost: It covers the exact perfect frequencies to give a full, round, warm, BOOM that fills up the room... not too puffy, airy, subsonic-y if you will, or too brittle and poppy either. And I got the same astounding results from the in-store bass amps that go for 800 and my 25 watt crate combo at home.

The feel is quite good and I have no complaints at all even though it's not on par with a model that costs a grand. It's still easy and very fun to play.

This is THE bass you should get because you won't be able to truly "step up" from it until you start spending over 600 mark.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special:

I've played guitar for 20+ years, and this was my first purchase of a bass although I had played friend's basses in bands for a couple of years. My musical tastes favor classic punk, hardcore, grunge, and alternative rock. Given the popularity of the Jaguars / Jazzmasters / Mustangs during these eras, the style of this bass really caught my attention – nice oversize headstock, instantly recognizeable Jaguar shape, and very balanced when wearing. The thing that most attracted me to this instrument was the availability of the Precision and Jazz tones, since I wasn't sure which one I would ultimately favor. This bass did not disappoint – you'll get lots of flexibility and control over tones (there's a knob control for middle pickup, bridge pickup, master tone, and active bass boost). Using these controls, I've been able to get everything from smooth, mellow jazz vibes to aggresive, overdriven tones out of this bass.

If you're a guitar player looking to invest in a good starting bass, or for anyone taking up bass for the first time, look no further – especially because I think guitar players have an expectation of a lot of tonal flexibility from an instrument. I'll also say this bass plays like an instrument twice that price – at this price, you can't go wrong. You'll be able to experiment with a wide variety of sounds on a single bass without having to – or before making a jump to – the high-end basses. You may want to have the bass set up professionally as the action in a bit high for my liking, but that goes for any new instrument.

The only complaint I have is that the bass arrived with some rattling in the compartment housing for the pots. I figured this was related to the manufacturing process and a minor oversight (easily cleaned out), but hey, I thought I'd find something for them to improve upon.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special:

This is a great value on an affordable bass. Although the bass needed a good setup, something I recommend on anything you purchase online, and some electronic work over time...it has been a very solid deal on a bass.

I've used this bass before as a second bass live in an alternate tuning to my main bass, a Music Man Stingray, and it has filled in fine actually...much better than I thought an entry level bass would do, but not enough to keep me from buying a separate bass for more serious gigging.

This is a perfect bass for a beginner with the P/J pickup config. There is plenty of room for variety in the sounds you can produce and songs you can play with this bass. And I got to say the Crimson Red with chrome hardware is beautiful! I give this bass a "not too bad" rating.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special:

The primary difference between the Affinity series Squiers and Fenders and the various tiers above, is how much time has been spent on them. The electronics on the Affinities are significantly lesser as well, but if you have any inclination to do a little work on your instrument to improve it, or if you have the means to have it worked on, you can end up with a really nice guitar/bass for very little money, relatively speaking. In my experience just going over the guitar and tightening things up does a good deal. Filing and polishing the ends of the frets under the high string alone makes these feel like much more costly instruments. And of course you can upgrade parts as desired over time to defer the cost, and if you want the final product to be fairly nice, you still don't need to put a whole lot of money into upgrades. These are already a good deal just for the body and neck.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special:

While I bought my model used and it is slightly older, it is still a rock-solid bass. The first thing that caught my attention was the weight of this thing. My familiarity with Squier before this bass was their starter guitars, which feel extremely light and "cheaper", I suppose. This bass feels like a Fender. Body is incredibly solid and the neck feels amazing.

Pickups allow a lot of versatility, never had any problems with the electronics. If you're looking for a solid bass on a budget, this is the one.

What a deal. Bass feels really well made for the price, sounds very good with stock pickups so much so that I'm not so sure installing better quality would be worth it. Only thing that stands out are the knobs are kinda cheap feeling and the internal electronics, wires and solders are probably cheap. But that's a fair thing for such a great price.

I greatly enjoy this bass simply because its a fun instrument to play. The neck is fast and has a good smooth action on it, It's a hybrid so you get the best of both worlds when you play it (P-bass/Jazz bass). I just need to remember to unplug it whenever I finish playing it so I don't kill the battery for the active pick-ups. Its a great go to bass and the price was a steal.

Loved the 3-tone sunburst. The extra bass boost with the battery is magnificent! Make sure to disconnect the cable from the bass when not in use. This will kill the battery if left in. I would install a new, fresh battery before any gig. You wouldn't want it cutting out on a gig. Plan ahead. I always keep a few new extra 9-volt batteries in the bass case!
