If you're looking in this price range, or anything under 500, you're done looking.

I had to sell my American made Fender P-Bass and wanted something to replace it that was great for rock and metal, but also extremely versatile. I wanted decent quality, not something for a beginner but not something for an expert with tons of cash either because I'm primarily a guitarist who only plays bass when I'm writing/recording for my songs.

I'd narrowed it down to a Squier VM PJ after a sales rep turned me on to the solid reputation of Squier for basses, and an Epiphone EB3 or Thunderbird 4. I gave this Jaguar a go at a music shop and was blown away by how immensely it made the previously mentioned models sound utterly limited and boring, especially since it's the cheapest of all.

The pickups and eq give me the smooth speaking voice all the way to crisp metallic crunch to a full powerful punch/thump tone for slappin - in a few ways it's actually better SOUNDING than my USA P-bass was (just not as good FEELING).

The key is the bass boost: It covers the exact perfect frequencies to give a full, round, warm, BOOM that fills up the room... not too puffy, airy, subsonic-y if you will, or too brittle and poppy either. And I got the same astounding results from the in-store bass amps that go for 800 and my 25 watt crate combo at home.

The feel is quite good and I have no complaints at all even though it's not on par with a model that costs a grand. It's still easy and very fun to play.

This is THE bass you should get because you won't be able to truly "step up" from it until you start spending over 600 mark.

Great Idea gone wrong

The first bass had flaws in the finish and the second was assembled poorly. The action on both was very high and bridge was mounted way out of center.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special:

This Bass feels great and has way better sound than I was expecting.

It can get a just a little bit of noise on the jazz pickup. I will probably replace it with a higher quality pickup eventually but it is really not bad at all.

I had to put in a new nine volt plug. The one that comes with it is cheap and will eventually break.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special:

Best deal I ever took advantage of! Take off the wound strings, put on some Fender flats, adjust the bridge height, the pick-up heights, and intonate. Thin, fast neck is perfect for the Blues, Soul, R&B. Keep the volume pots below about 80% and watch out! EVERYONE asks me about this bass, and it performs perfectly with my Mesa M-9/410 rig OR my Rumble 500/210 for small jobs. I put a pearl pick guard on mine, and it LOOKS and PLAYS like a very expensive instrument. I can't believe Fender has been able to keep a lid on this one. Get one before the price sky-rockets...

I have a 1978 Jazz, and it is getting to be too heavy for a 3-1/2 or 4 hour session, but I can play the Squire all night long. I always say "The older I get, the older I get", and the Squire Jaguar Bass in one hand and the Rumble 500/210 in the other, I am done loading in or out. No more lugging the heavy stuff around for me.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special:

I originally bought this because I'm a guitar player that always wanted to learn bass. I played with it in our churches band for about a year and its solid. I've now started my own band, and our bass player uses my bass and its done great on recordings and everything in between. Great bass. The active pickups can be a little annoying just because you never wanna leave home with out a 9 volt, but other then that its a steal at that price.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special:

This is great for someone who likes to jam out on the bass but it is also good for recording. However, you really have to mess with the knobs to get the tone you want. It can be too bright of a tone at times I found and had to use a Jazz bass instead which tells you how bright it can get. This isn't a negative, its just different. On a different recording (drums, bass, vocals only) the Jaguar was great. With the active pickup on and all the knobs turned up you get such a full sound its like a freaking jaguar is going to jump out of the amp and kill somebody! Pretty cool bass. BTW, I was playing some American standard jazz basses prior to this and the Jaguar is better in terms of playability and the fullness of sound.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Electric Bass Guitar Special:

I've played guitar for 20+ years, and this was my first purchase of a bass although I had played friend's basses in bands for a couple of years. My musical tastes favor classic punk, hardcore, grunge, and alternative rock. Given the popularity of the Jaguars / Jazzmasters / Mustangs during these eras, the style of this bass really caught my attention – nice oversize headstock, instantly recognizeable Jaguar shape, and very balanced when wearing. The thing that most attracted me to this instrument was the availability of the Precision and Jazz tones, since I wasn't sure which one I would ultimately favor. This bass did not disappoint – you'll get lots of flexibility and control over tones (there's a knob control for middle pickup, bridge pickup, master tone, and active bass boost). Using these controls, I've been able to get everything from smooth, mellow jazz vibes to aggresive, overdriven tones out of this bass.

If you're a guitar player looking to invest in a good starting bass, or for anyone taking up bass for the first time, look no further – especially because I think guitar players have an expectation of a lot of tonal flexibility from an instrument. I'll also say this bass plays like an instrument twice that price – at this price, you can't go wrong. You'll be able to experiment with a wide variety of sounds on a single bass without having to – or before making a jump to – the high-end basses. You may want to have the bass set up professionally as the action in a bit high for my liking, but that goes for any new instrument.

The only complaint I have is that the bass arrived with some rattling in the compartment housing for the pots. I figured this was related to the manufacturing process and a minor oversight (easily cleaned out), but hey, I thought I'd find something for them to improve upon.
