i got mine a few days ago and this bass is awesome. I usually just use the precision pickup for my rock band but the jazz pickup gives a nice tone for playing other styles like jazz and funk. With both pickups all the way up it sounds almost identical to a j bass but fatter. I'd really recommend this one to j bass players who use both pickups cause it sounds better than the j bass. Not sold on playing just the j pickup as it is not as powerful as the ones they put in the J basses. the j pickup is a bit of a cheapie in my opinion but i'll leave it cause im more of a precision guy and rarely use it. If you wanna get that jaco tone id recommend upgrading the j pickup. pulling one out from squire vm j bass should do the trick. then you'd really have the best of both worlds. for the price this bass is a steal

I don't six other fender basses (Ps and Js, USA, CIJ, MIM) and love them all dearly. I always loved the idea of adding a Jazz Bass pickup to a P-bass but wasn't willing to throw down for a USA Fender. I spoke with some friends at a local guitar shop asking their opinion about Squier and they told me the brand has come along nicely of late and suggested I give one a try. At first I purchased a Squier Affinity and that was quickly returned once I had a chance to really see how low budget the craftsmanship was. Then I bought this Vintage a Modified and I'm pretty satisfied ... After I spent a few hours working on it that is. Overall the quality was light years better than the Affinity however there were some very visible fills (putty?) all along the upper side of the rosewood neck. They were outside of the playing area but they were very, very visible. I corrected these and sanded the rosewood fretboard to a 400 grit (beautifully smooth) and ten oiled the poor thing (it was as dry as a desert). Next I restrung the bass with Fender 9050Ms (flat wound) and gave it a thorough setup. Once done I sat back and started playing ... And got lost in the joy of the moment. It has a definite P-bass sound but I'm not really hearing as much from the J-bass pickup as I had hoped. Please note, I play 9050Ms on all my Fenders so it's not the strings giving me a sound I don't expect. My guess at the moment is the pickups are not identical to what I'm used to in my Fender basses. It's a guess, I could be wrong. You will need to try one for yourself to decide. I may swap out the pickups to improve the tone in the months to come.

One last note re the putty used on the freboard, the color match really is perfect and once sanded and oiled it completely disappears.

Regarding recommending this bass ... I think if I were not spoiled by playing Fenders all the time I would have been pretty happy with this straight out of the box. It seems to be a pretty darn good bass.

Great bass guitar for the money. High end models sell for 5 times as much. This instrument gives you 90% of the feel and sound of the more expensive units. Is that last 10% worth all that extra cost?

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass PJ:

I've been a guitar player most of my life and recently decided to take up the bass. I didn't have a lot to spend on a new instrument, or much spare time to shop around, so I decided to take a chance on this model. I received it yesterday and cannot believe how nice this thing is!

I'd be willing to bet that if you covered the "Squier" logo, a lot of players would think they were holding a much more expensive instrument. It feels solid, the neck is smooth, and the sunburst finish on the one I received looks amazing. I've been playing it through a 220 watt combo amp with a 15 inch speaker and the range of tones I'm getting is all I'll ever need.

I did do some set-up work on mine, but that's not to say that it was badly adjusted the way I received it. I'm just picky and I like to tinker! So, if you're looking for quality at a low price, I don't think you can go wrong with this one!

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass PJ:

About 2 years ago I had been looking for a bass to start learning and practicing with. I carefully sifted through the ones on this website to see which one I'd prefer the most. I ended up going with this one in sunburst and it's been a great choice. Playing on precision pickups give a nice sound almost like a professional bass depending on how good your technique is. The jazz pickup sounds punchy and gives decent tone, not as great as the other one but gives you an idea on how a jazz bass sounds when you start learning. it's a good pj configuration for beginners and you're hearing two different types of sound, how awesome is that for someone starting to pick up a bass! Eventually the high G string gave me fret buzz but at that point I already knew how to adjust the saddle and found that's what was causing it. All in all though this is a great bass and I would never go back on this

Had to send first one back for having a bubble in the poly finish on the of the neck by the nut. The second one was perfect...other than frets being a tad sharper at the ends than I prefer, but a little filling took care of it. Most of these Indonesian Squier guitar's and bass's that I've bought don't have sharp ends. Anyhow, was worth it for the sound, feel, and look of this Lake Placid Blue bass. I put a white pickguard on it. PJ pickups on a bass, to me is the best of both worlds. I can slap, finger, or pick and get most any sound I want.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass PJ:

Out side of the shipping box being heavily damaged due to poor boxing up causing it to show up opened and crushed , fortunatly the guitar made it appearing so far undamaged, Time will tell on that. As far as the bass itself I was impressed by the quality , the finish, the playability and the fact it did not seem to need a set up. I tuned it , checked its intonation and was off to the races as they say. I recorded a song with it and was impressed by its sound and the overall characteristics of this bass. I have many basses in my arsenal as well as friend bass players who have tons of basses that we use to play out with and record songs. I will say this bass stacks up against most of them having one of my friend bass players marvel at the cost of this bass and the fact that he himself had to dive deep to find anything he could thumb his nose at. His comments to me after the search. OMG . In the long run I had planned to replace the stock pick ups but after hearing them I will reserve that thought till I know this bass better over time. The volume and tone pots maybe could have been better at making fine adjustments but again normally I set it and forget it so here again I will wait till I know this bass better before deciding if I have to upgrade them. Nut and tuners shocked me at this price point > I see no reason to even bother changing them now or in the future. Time will tell but for the price you cannot make a mistake here..

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass PJ:

Only used it once so far, for recording, but being new to bass, it felt comfortable and easy to play right away. Plays in tune, came in great shape, no problems. Also, as usual, MF is very fast on delivery!

Use this in a small church and it works great. Have to tweak it a bit, but for the price it's a good buy.
