Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass V:

Very pleased with the guitar. Plays good, looks good, electronics are good, pots are smooth turning. If you use flat wound strings there is a problem with the wrapping of the ball end of string laying over the bridge. "B" string only. Don't get full resonance. With the help of a spacer at the back of the bridge the problem was solved. The spacer is easily removed when changing strings and not needed with non flatwounds.
    A great buy if can't afford a Fender "P".
Additionally had an issue with intonation on "E" and "B" strings but solved with the help of the repair shop gurus at Mass St. music in Lawrence.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass V:

I bought this bass guitar simply because it was on sale and I was intrigued to try a 5 string p bass. At the price point I got this bass at (rhymes with toofiddy) I feel this is a solid well constructed instrument. I did receive one with a 2 inch long finish crack in the neck pocket which was returned for another which was without a blemish. The frets are not sharp; something that is often associated with lower end bass guitars and the semi wide fret board feels natural when playing. The pots and knobs feel/look as though they are as good as any on a MIM fender. This being said, the only real downfall to this bass is the weak pickup. Another reviewer referred to the pickup as being "hot", let me just say that it is neither hot nor is it loud by any stretch of the imagination. I was actually unable to trigger the effect on my envelope filter due to the signal being so weak. This was remedied with my boss EQ pedal. Perhaps moving the pickup closer will resolve this somewhat, but I am doubtful as the height is about perfect as is. The bridge is your typical cheap retro or "vintage" style and although cheap is certainly sufficient at this price point. I was able to obtain rather low action and not experience any buzzing to speak of. If you are looking for a 5 string p bass and do not want to shell out big money for an American made instrument, then this Squier bass will fit the bill nicely. On a final note, the Olympic White color with the tortoise shell pick guard is quite attractive in person, the sunburst allows one to see the multiple pieces of mismatched wood.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass V:

I just picked up playing bass about two years ago. I'm finally becoming proficient at the four string and had planned on venturing into a five after a few more years; however, Musicians Friend had a deal on this beauty I couldn't pass up. The day it arrived, it was incredibly cold so I decided to leave in the box for a few hours to let it slowly warm up. That time was torture. After unboxing the bass and doing a fast inspection, we tuned up and strummed that B. Wow. Was surprised at the sustain and lack of buzz. After a while of working up and down the neck, I was surprised it was still in tune.

The craftsmanship seems solid. The frets are dressed nicely with no snags. The neck is quite comfortable. I was expecting a 2x4 and instead received a very playable bass.

This one is very hard to put down.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass V:

Really solid, sharp-looking bass you won't be ashamed to play out with, once you slide the B and E saddles back a little. Intonation really wasn't that far off, but needed to be addressed. Has a warm, round punch that lends itself well to rock and pop with the single pup giving flat, dependable response. If it is a little too flat in spots for your taste, I'd try a bass EQ pedal before diving into a pup swap. Seems to defeat the purpose of a low-cost 5-string. As others have noted, the wide neck is very user friendly and should encourage you to try different voicings and notes if you have always been a 4-string player. That extra string is there for a reason, you know. And to me is the biggest argument for this Squire -- you can try out a 5-string in your regular playing and not go broke or feel stupid if you do not like it.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass V:

Great bass out of the box, just needed a little intonation setup at the bridge and a string change to sound great.

Love the neck, really fast and didn't found any dead spots. It was straight so didn't needed any adjustment

The quality On the finish of the neck and body is superb, fretwork is on par of my American Deluxe JB and the pickup is hot and delivers that classic P-bass tone I was looking for.

So this is a great sounding bass, at a nice and Affordable price...

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass V:

This is my new "go to" bass. I took it out of the box, tuned it up and it was set up perfectly. No neck or intonation adjustment was required. The action is just right for my playing style. The low B string is not as "floppy" as my previous 5 string. Fit and finish are amazing from end to end. The piece of maple used for the fingerboard has some slight coloration variations that would probably be rejected for a standard U.S. made P-bass, but I don't mind - in fact, I think it adds character and beauty. The only thing I anticipate changing will be replacing the pickups eventually. I would highly recommend this Squier 5 string P-bass.. It's a great value for the money.

The pots remind me of my 66 p bass very smooth workmanship nice. due to the 34 scale the b is a little sloppy but tolerable. The pickup is decent and will get the job done i am upgrading it to the 3/8 magnets. The stock strings on a the d and g sound fine the e and b lack a little tone. but labellas will fix that.

Comments about Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass V:

With all the great reviews, both here and on other websites, my expectations were high on this bass. People are saying this bass is equal to, or better than, the Mexican Fender. It's not. It's a very good low-priced bass, but it's not a Fender.

The pickups on my bass need to be reworked. The pickup screws can't be adjusted further in, even though the pickups themselves have plenty of room. And that brings up another point, there doesn't seem to be enough foam under the pickups, they're a little loose and sloppy in the cavity.

The nut was cut sloppily, the slots are too large (and I use large flatwounds) and the slots aren't symmetrical. The neck is actually pretty good, at least once I cleaned off the excess glue or finish that was spotted on the back of the neck. Fretwork was good.

I got the sunburst finish, and the finish is good, and looks very nice with the tortoise pickguard. But the wood under the finish is all kinds of ugly. It's several different pieces, all with imperfections, and no attempt to match grain was made. But you would have to be close to see this.

I've been reviewing this bass as if it was a Fender, and maybe that's not fair. But all the hype had me expecting Fender quality. This is a good sounding, nice playing bass, and worth every bit of it's low price tag. But don't buy this bass expecting a Fender. I will spend several more hours setting this up, tweaking, and fixing the little things that you wouldn't have to do on an American (or even Mexican) Fender.

One final thing, I've owned other 5 string basses, and had a hard time adjusting to them. Slender necks always felt good in the music store, but I just couldn't play them well. This 5 string neck is wide, but string spacing seems to be the same as my 4 string P Bass. It's a natural feel, a perfect fit, and I was able to pick it up and play - no adjustment time needed. It feels great.
