Carbon/maple hybrid delivers the warmth of wood and clarity of graphite.

Designed by Ned Steinberger himself, it features the unique U-channel graphite core in a rock maple neck and maple body. Combo head accommodates double-ball and single-ball strings while the unique direct-drive double-ball bridge adds super-fast string changes and tune-it-once tuning stability.

While other guitar manufacturers have been resting on their laurels, Steinberger's been thinking. Witness the strap hook, recessed tool holder and output jack, fold-down leg rest, and phenolic fingerboard that's slick as butter and fast as lightning.

Low-impedance EMG USA bass pickup with internal low-impedance preamp and piezo bridge extends the range on both ends for earth-moving lows and phenomenal transients from slap-style playing.

Comments about Steinberger Synapse XS-1FPA 4-String Bass:

I've owned both a 5-string and 4 string Steinberger Synapse. I also own one of the old graphite XL-2 Steinberger basses. I loved the 5-string Synapse but eventually sold it because I'd been playing 4-string basses for 40 years and occasionally found the 5th string to be confusing. I still own my 4-string Synapse and play it both live and in the studio often. It took me a while to adjust to the active EQ, but I find if I center the treble and bass controls for a 'flat' bass tone, I get a very fine tone suitable for almost any musical style. And of course the knobs can be adjusted to tweak that tone if desired. You can also use the blend knob to dial in as much or little of each pickup as you want, giving the Synapse great tonal versatility. It plays like a dream and is beautifully balanced, a Steinberger trademark. It's relatively light-weight but still has great sustain. The bass uses either regular bass strings or double ball end strings, and if you prefer double ball end flatwounds, LaBella string set LAB-S500L is a flatwound set of double ball end strings. Hope that is helpful.

Comments about Steinberger Synapse XS-1FPA 4-String Bass:

Good all around bass. Great for transporting around. The only draw back is that I have not been able to find double ball flatwound strings. Can use single ball flatwounds but it loses the ease of changing strings.

Not satisfied with this product

By Al Brandle

Comments about Steinberger Synapse XS-1FPA 4-String Bass:

I play in a working band and was looking for a good quality bass to play at gigs and practice. I ordered this bass sight unseen based on good reviews here and elsewhere. I needed to upgrade my bass and was hoping this would be the perfect solution Unfortunately that was not to be the case. It arrived with a buzzing E and A string which I adjusted to make work right. The tones were not what I was looking for no matter how hard I tried to find them. I'm plahying through an Ampeg 115 combo that works fine with my Ibanez GR200. According to their literature (owners manual) these basses are set up to factory spec before being shipped. I couldn't see how anyone could call this instrument set up. Playing the G,D and A strings yielded one volume while playing the E produced a very LOUD boomy tone so I would have to pluck the E with far less attack than the other 3 to get an even volume. THAT SAID, to their credit Musicians Friend refunded my entire purchase price as per their 45 day satisfaction guarantee and THEY get two thumbs up. Though I would probably not order another instrument without sitting down and playing it, I would gladly do business with Musicians Friend in the future. A top notch outfit that backs up their promises with real results.
Small.supposedly light weight but that can be deceiving.I found it quite heavy for it's size. Master volume with two pickup controls and a tone control. 1 humbucker and a piezo pickup in the bridge.
These instruments are supposedly set up at the factory before being shipped. Mine arrived with buzzing strings and an uneven volume between the E string and the A,D,and G respectively ( E was loud and boomy and the other 3 much quieter ). Overall it was poorly set up as well. The flat finish was even and acceptable.
For an instrument in this price range it's not worth the money. Ok the price is not a fortune but the quality and sound just aren't there for that amound of money.

My new steiny bass

Comments about Steinberger Synapse XS-1FPA 4-String Bass:

Out of the box and out of the gig bag she performs like a thoroughbred. Unlike my made in japan fender bass or my sterling by musicman or even my rickenbacker 4005 bass. It is unique balanced and each note rings true so much so you might have to palm mute occasionally. The three small knobs 1st being the magnetic piezo blend is subtle but noticable. it does have a live warm sound when turned counterclockwise and when turned clockwise it decreases and the hi band and low band are more prominent depending upon your settings. It is easy to play and adjust to. i can hear each note and so can the band. This bass doesn't have my rickenbacker sound, but that is not why i purchased it. To me the sound is clean and not muddy. feel is excellent and smooth. Bass is light in weight balanced and exciting to play. you can slap pop or pick it and it is still smooth to your touch. Was a bit pricey but it is the real deal. To NED its 2011 couldn't we have gotten an easy access battery compartment in the back meaning no screws. Love the gig bag and i am happy with my purchase.

LOVE this bass !!!!!!!!

Comments about Steinberger Synapse XS-1FPA 4-String Bass:

I never really liked the older Steinberger bass's, had played a few but the body was just to small and never felt right, then very recently I see the Synapse online and really like the look and body style much more than the original Steinberger's,,,, so I took a chance an ordered one without seeing it or playing it in person.I currently own 1 Fender AreoDyne Jazz bass, 3 Fender P-bass's, a Dean bass and 2 acoustic bass's, so I have many bass's to compare to the Synapse and have also owned a ton of other bass's to compare to.The verdict,,, me thinks the Synapse might become my main axe.It is just a really fun bass to play and it just looks so slick and feels so nice its hard to put it down. The tone thru my MarkBass 115 Berlin combo rocks !!!,,, very happy with the sound.I also string ALL my bass's using a B-E-A-D tuning, using BEAD strings (the G string goes in the garbage can),, anyhow, the BEAD Steinberger double ball strings fit perfectly on the 4 string Synapse with no modification of the nut or bridge,, and being able to change out a full set of strings in just a few minutes is very cool to say the least. To be honest I cant think of anything I dont like about my new Synapse.Matter of fact, I love my new black Synapse so much I think Im going to sell of a few of my P-bass's and get another Synapse, perhaps the white one or a black 5 banger.Ohh,,, and this dealer was GREAT to deal with and shipped super fast !!!!CheersDavyo

I just recieved my new Steiney! This is an odd bass with not a wide variety of tones. BUT what tone it has is excellant. Great features like never hitting the drummer`s cymbal with your headstock in a small club and last but not least this thing NEVER goes out of tune! Really, I have witnesses. Great balance. Get one you won`t be dissapointed!

Steinberger bass

By Jake da Snake

from Honolulu, HI

Comments about Steinberger Synapse XS-1FPA 4-String Bass:

I bought this bass because I always wanted a Steinberger. The design is awesome but I later learned that this bass can only fit light gauge double ball strings. It says it on the manual. I'm sure you can put on heavier single balls as this bass can take both styles, but the tuners struggle to tighten up heavy gauge double balls. No problem if you don't mind playing lite strings. I've gotten used to it, but overall this bass is awesome if you like the Steinberger look.

An excellent bass for the price

By Bassman59-Pc1QV

Comments about Steinberger Synapse XS-1FPA 4-String Bass:

I've played bass for 36 years now and have owned a large number of instruments from different manufacturers, including many of the better known custom basses. While the Synapse four string bass is mass produced, it is solid as a rock, and it produces a huge range of tone, from booming lows to trebly slap/pop. Although its appearance is anything but traditional, tone and playability is what matters, and this bass delivers. What is really outstanding about the instrument is its clarity. Every note rings and is easily heard. On many basses there are certain notes that "boom" and are much louder than others. The Synapse bass simply does not have that problem. Volume and punch are consistent over the entire fretboard. I hate to admit it, but I find that I prefer the Synapse over a very good custom bass for which I paid over three thousand dollars.
