      Steinberger

Carbon/maple hybrid delivers the warmth of wood and clarity of graphite.

Designed by Ned Steinberger himself, it features the unique U-channel graphite core in a rock maple neck and maple body. Combo head accommodates double-ball and single-ball strings while the unique direct-drive double-ball bridge adds super-fast string changes and tune-it-once tuning stability.

While other guitar manufacturers have been resting on their laurels, Steinberger's been thinking. Witness the strap hook, recessed tool holder and output jack, fold-down leg rest, and phenolic fingerboard that's slick as butter and fast as lightning.

Low-impedance EMG USA bass pickup with internal low-impedance preamp and piezo bridge extends the range on both ends for earth-moving lows and phenomenal transients for slap-style playing.

This custom version also features a flamed maple top and trans finish. Includes gig bag.

Comments about Steinberger Synapse XS-1FPA Custom 4-String Bass:

I Purchased this bass as used and it arrived really quickly to Australia ,very well packed and transported in like new condition.Very Happy with Musician's Friend for their service.
As with any used Bass the strings were worn and a bit dead and there was frett buzz going on and string ringing .
I changed the strings to a new set of good brand name medium gauge and reset the action and it sounded great.Great low tones on the E string and a lot of definition at volume .
My band mates were impressed at how clearly they could hear all the range of bass notes.
I hooked it up to the Mark Bass amp which can tend to be a bit tricky to obtain clear low bass definition at volume and it was clear as a bell , a compressor pedal helped a bit there too.
Then I hooked it up to an older Carvin R600 stereo bass amp that I just had serviced and valved and it absolutely cranked through a 15" speaker and 4X10's, I could turn the volume up heaps without distortion or bothering the other instruments because it had so much definition. The inbuilt compressor on the carvin along with all the EQ settings helped a lot.
I was hoping to go really lightweight to gigs , Steinberger and Markbass, but the best sound( at the moment) was the tried and true bass stack with the big amp!
With all this great clear definition going on what happens is that every note is heard clear as a bell , so there is nowhere to hide in the mix ,everything has to be played spot on.Which is a great incentive to practise hard and get it 100% right. It also helps the other musicians and vocalist in giving them a clearer line to follow in a song
I'm happy with the instrument ,I'm still experimenting with all the settings and tones and amp possibilities , as well as the options of playing off the back line amp at some gigs and through the desk and PA at others , but the engineering and signals of the instrument seems great either way, it sits comfortably against the body with the strap extender, it's a great addition to my bass gig and rehearsal options, and very convenient to take to a gig as a back up or main guitar.
Some of my more traditional guitar mates commented that the Steiny was a bit of a radical change of look from the P bass at a recent jam open mike, but i'm on the continuous search for functionality and performance and increased options so I wasn't daunted by that.
Looking forward to doing more business with Musician's friend.

Comments about Steinberger Synapse XS-1FPA Custom 4-String Bass:

I fail to see why NS would build such amodern and useful bass and then use a non-intonatable bridge. Personally, I like to be as in tune us possible. It renders this bass useless IMO.

9.5 only because of set up on arrival. This bass has a multiple tones with the EMG and Piezo bridge. Has great electronics to shape tones. The neck has an easy feel and is very fast.

Took 1 point off for poor set up on arrival. Had my bass tech adjust the neck, intonation and put on strings that I prefer. After my tech was through....Wow!!! Very solid and the playability/tone is endless. Stain paint job is awesome! I clean it with a little dab od Murphy's oil soap. (Do not use polish or wax as it leaves a dull film. This bass model synapse has no clear coat)
Great price for such a quality instument. THis bass is well built and will last a lifetime if cared for correctly. Seeing the prices if steinbergers from the 80's online, I expect this bass to increase in value if kept in good condition.

Comments about Steinberger Synapse XS-1FPA Custom 4-String Bass:

One day while waiting around for my Rickenbacker,to get brought to me I saw this lil toy looking bass. I then saw an amp and a cable and said why not. i saw the price tag and said its gotta be a thousand dollars for a reason so I plugged it in and oh -my -God. The best tone ,the fastest neck,it was almost like when you press the demo button on a keyboaord ,it was like dummy proof. Ill tell you what ,this is probably the best sounding bass ive heard. It has this metalic feel on the whole body and a metal handle to carry it on the back, built in.Its awsome. I feel like part if a new family because Steinberger started all this. Dont get a cheap imitation ,get the real thing. My buddy bought one also and in all black. He stole my idea and put green neon strings on there and it looks awsome. Get one ,dont think twice.Comes with a nice padded bag,but im gonna get the case because I wanna protect the lil guy. See if you can switch the bag out for a haedcase right from the beginning .You dont need both. I love big basses, but this changed my whole outlook on small bases. Its nice playing while watching tv and not have to worry about knocking a lamp over.

Comments about Steinberger Synapse XS-1FPA Custom 4-String Bass:

I purchased the Steinberger Synapse XS-1FPA 4-String Bass(BLUE)If you haven't played or purchased one of these basses yet, you will. If you play this bass once you will start collecting your change and sell some gear to get one of your own. Thats what I did. This bass will make you a better faster cleaner bass player. This bass delivers clean clear solid notes with sustain unlike anything I have ever played. Not one crackle all the way up the neck. I have never played on a neck like this. This is the best bass guitar I have ever owned. And I own many. All high end.The peizo in the bridge gives me many more tone options than my other basses. The EMG covers the booming lows all bass players look for. These two features combined give me everything I need. Every time I reach down to find a tone I never hit a dead end. Very simple to operate. Overall the sound is clear as a bell.Opinion: Spend the extra money and get the blue, red or yellow.I feel honored to own this instrument. Thanks Mr. Steinberger

Comments about Steinberger Synapse XS-1FPA Custom 4-String Bass:

I've had this bass for a week now, and I'm a little disappointed with the way it is put together. For the money, I'd definitely expect better drilled screw holes and a better battery compartment. It sounds different than the old Steinbergers, but not in a bad way. The bass has a maple body with a graphite truss rod tunnel in the neck. The best I can describe the difference is that this new line sounds less "clinical" than the 80's Steinies. The sustain and edge is still there, at least to my ears. The piezo bridge pickup adds some really unique character to the sound. Slap sounds great. You can get the Steinberger bridge system cheaper on a Hohner, but the total package here is pretty good. The headless form factor turns heads and makes it really convenient to carry and play in close quarters.

          Nice bass but needs work

Comments about Steinberger Synapse XS-1FPA Custom 4-String Bass:

I like the sound and the look of the bass but there are several things I would change. I took off that weird strap adapter and istalled my own strap lock where the original steinberger has it. I hat the fact that the bass needs 2 9 volt batteries and if they go out you are SOL. Also it does not have the great steinberger bridge so the intonation is never perfect. I also dont like where the jack is located on the back of the bass, its hard to use with a wireless.

          Very surprising bass!

Comments about Steinberger Synapse XS-1FPA Custom 4-String Bass:

I'm a guitar player who also doubles on bass only now I'm playing bass with a band full time. I used an original Steinberger bass in the mid 80's but couldn't find one now. I decided to give these new ones a try and it's no novelty or gimmick bass - it truly rocks! Incredible gain, response and tone, as well as being easy on the back, As a bonus, it's also very stable as far as tuning is concerned. It's perfect for playing on small crowded stages where a huge headstock would get in the way. Because it has only one pick-up (plus the piezo), this bass will not deliver a ton of tonal variety, but the few sounds it does have are punchy, detailed, dynamic, and useful for any style of music. I'm going to buy the 5-string version as well.
