This finish is non-glossy, never get’s sticky and always feels fresh. The tinted satin finish looks great and gives the instrument a classic look and feel.

Located on the control plate, the jack is secure and won’t easily pull out or get damaged when placed in a guitar stand. Sterling by Music Man uses a heavy-duty jack that is designed to withstand plenty of use and abuse.

Battery
The 2-band active preamp is powered by a 9-volt battery. The easy-to-open battery compartment makes battery changes easy and simple. Simply flip up the battery door, unclip the 9-volt from the clip and clip in your new battery. Takes no time at all. The battery is easily accessible on the back of the body. Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Bass Guitar:

After I Received this bass I plugged it in on my practice amp and it sounded fine. That being said that was the end of the good. I did not have a tuner in the house so I just tuned up by ear, as I played a little more the bass kept going flat. I looked down at the bridge and the screws holding the bridge down had pulled out of the body and it was nowhere close to being in tune. Its a nice idea but the wood is very soft and did not seem to hold screws very well, I sent it back. I have the 4string version and love it!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Bass Guitar:

amazing bass in it's price range.if you like e.b. musicman, you'll love these Sub series basses. Strong electronics and good musicman tone.Hardware is obviously cheaper, but does the job well.I just recieved my 3d Sub series bass and I am pleased with all of them. They have all come set-up pretty well, the last one was just spot-on.The only negative things I can say is there's not much protection in boxing and shipping, they could easily be crushed. Also on this last one ,there was some blimishes in the finish, and some light finish scratches, but to me that's no big deal all thing's considered. In my opinion, these do absolutely surpass your expectations, which was there goal.I have played the E.B.s and the Sterling Ray's and I'm telling you these are the real deal.

Great tone for a bass in this price range. The pick up is very hot. Change the strings and lower the pick up and you have a good bass. Set up was pretty good out of the box. Music Man feel at a budget price!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Bass Guitar:

I really am impressed with bass. The build and finish on it is excellent. In this price range it is hard to find a bass that knocks most apects out of the park, but this on does. The pickup has that MM flavor but it is super hot, and a good set of strings magnifies that quality. This however is perfect for slapping. I have my action as low as I could ever want it without any fret buzz. Th electronics are dead quiet and the knobs, tuners, and pots work very well. I have always wanted the music man experience without the price tag, because I don't think it would get much performance time. This bass is perfect for me. I serves the purpose of working well for jamming at home and is a usable backup. For a fiver the string spacing is a little tight but I have been able to adapt. I would reccomend this bass to anyone curious about the MM hype.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 Bass Guitar:

I'm a drummer by day, but over the past few years have been setting out to learn other instruments in order to become just dangerous enough to demo my own material other real stringed musicians. Given my expensive drum habit, I found myself in the budget 5 string market. And what a good place to be in these days..

Overall, this is a 4/5 star bass considering the features vs. cost.

First, the fit and finish of this Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray 5 is very classy. The glossy black on black motif with mid-duty black knobs, chrome hardware, maple neck and matching maple headstock are awesome IMHO. The finish looks durable enough, although this will be a studio only bass so it shouldn't see much outdoors. One caveat is like most budget instruments, this maple neck is thirsty. Be prepared to apply some fingerboard conditioner (I used Planet Waves Hydrate) and a light rub of 000 steel wool on the back of the neck. I'll probably do this once a month or whenevr I change strings for the near future. Even after 2 days, the neck just feels better.

Next, mixed feelings about the hardware and I can see this is where SBMM saved some money. The nut feels like it was cut for extra light (120-40) type strings. Under tension, the slots expand a little for 130-45, but there's potential lost resonance there. The tuners are tight under tension and feel pretty thin. I can see these potentially snapping if you're used to cranking down on your normal tank tuners. Also the bridge is definitely of the cheapo OLP lineage - having played vintage MM's and recent OLP copies, seasoned players will notice the subtle difference in feel from a more solid bridge.

The body / ergonomics are also a little mixed as you can imagine. On one hand, the ~7 lb weight is great but because the 5 string neck is so heavy and the body is so light, be prepared for significant neck dive. Not a huge deal for me as I sit mostly in my studio and play rested on my left leg instead of right, but for the working bassists take notice. The body also feels hollow throughout - all the way even into the horns! Not sure if this is true or not, but the wood is so light, knocking on the horns feels like knocking on balsa wood. Not a huge deal and doesn't seem to affect the tone, but don't expect a T40 slab of wood.

The setup by the factory, while passable and mostly intonated, was way to high for my tastes. unless you're a slap-only player, you'll probably need to lower the action. The good news is the neck is absolutely straight out of the box - I didn't need to adjust the truss via the base wheel. The default strings are not good, so of course after I conditioned the board, a new set of EB Cobalt 130-45's went on there - what a world of difference!! Which brings me to the main attraction: sound..

After the above mentioned setup and new strings, I'm greeted with a pretty great sounding, playing and feeling bass!! The 2 band active EQ may seem limiting, but surprisingly I can dial in all of the tones I expected. With the halfway-notched bass and treble knobs dimed (my personal fave), the signature exposed pole pickup just chimes. Surprisingly even with the plastic nut, lean bridge and lightweight body, this pickup coaxes great sustain out of the cobalts - it rings for DAYS. In fact, the pick up is so hot, I had to lower it a couple of mil because it was noticeably pulling down the strings at first. Finger, pick, slap/pop, thumping - all of the good stuff is there. It's a nice, simple bass that sounds great for my purposes.

Word of advice, call MF during their sales. Very friendly, fast, patient, knowledgeable staff have always been eager to hand out deals, upgrades and advice like candy! Ordering online is easy, but you won't be sorry calling them for sweet deals and extras.
