OVERVIEW

A solid 4-string with amazing tone shaping, a loud humbucking pickup and quality construction.

The S.U.B. Series family of instruments introduce a new level of quality, features and value for the beginning or intermediate player. Part of the esteemed Music Man & Sterling by Music Man family of instruments, Sterling Music Man feels all players should have access to affordable guitars and basses that feel, sound and play like a refined, crafted professional instrument.

The best components, hardware and designs all work in harmony to give you the best user experience as you discover your sound. Our goal is to deliver an instrument, at a price that surpasses your expectations.

The Ray4 and Ray5 basses are the cousins of the Music Man StingRay 4 and 5 basses. Classic, iconic instruments that defined a generation of bassists since the late '70s. Active electronics, low-noise humbucking pickups, rock solid hardware and a simple, uncluttered look that is instantly recognizable and respected.

Music Man starts with a solid hardwood body. Light, airy bodies full of tone are attached to a slim, easy to play full scale maple neck. A 38 mm nut width (Ray4) and 45mm nut width (Ray5) was created for easy playability. Medium jumbo frets allow for effortless fretting. The slim neck and narrow nut feels at home with small or large hands.

Played the bass for a while, sounds great, but mainly writing this review to post pictures of the black walnut finish. For some reason, couldn't find anything online, and when I called Musician's Friend, they couldn't help me. I might add that the fretboard had noticeable scratches beneath the plastic film, and this could have been a factory defect.

Initial Impressions:

This model has the infamous volume pot issue where the volume goes from 0 to 100% in the first quarter turn, as well as a preamp overhead issue where the preamp appears to be overdriving when adjusting the bass EQ up any more than mid way (even with the pickup height reduced significantly). Apparently EBMM will be addressing both issues in the 2018 model. All Ray 4's produced from 2012 - 2017 suffer from both issues.

Honestly, I don't know how EBMM let the instrument out the door with these issues. After playing around with a few ideas I simply opted to purchase an EMG MMTW drop in replacement. Volume issue solved. Preamp issue solved. Best money I ever spent.

There was a subtle frequency peak present (I noticed this immediately upon plugging in) somewhere in the upper midrange. Initially I thought it was kind of cool and would help me cut through the band mix. Sadly, after a few sets, I decided it was more annoying than cool. Fortunately, the new EMG resolved the issue. Sounds more like an early Stingray now (at least to my ears). As an added bonus EMG MMTW has a pull switch on the volume part to put the coil into single coil mode, providing you with even more tonal options.

The bass off the retail floor was set up perfectly. PERFECTLY. The action was absurdly low. All the ones I tried at the shop were good....no very good. This one was great though.

At some point I'll replace the tuners with Hipshot Ultralights. This instrument is headstock heavy, and the tuners are cheap garbage (mine already started to bind).

Another issue. ALL of the screws holding the pickguard and selector plate were stripped right from the factory. Had to "reinforce" all of the screw holes with Elmers wood glue. Others have complained about this as well.

All in all, it's really a great bass. Lot's of bang for the buck. A really solid choice for beginners. Great for more advanced bass players with the aforementioned pickup and tuner upgrades.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

I purchased this bass about 4 months ago. I don't know where to begin, except to say this is an amazing bass for the price . Mint green - the stock photos online are way off. I guess you could say it's more of a surf green, and paired with the maple neck, just beautiful! The neck is very thin at the nut - which I really like, but some certainly may not. I find it super easy to play, like an Ibanez neck. The fit and finish is solid. This bass is VERY light, I would guess in the 6-7 lb range. Again, I like this, but others might feel it isn't beefy enough. The tones are soo nice. You can easily and smoothly dial in wonderful tones. The only issue, which isn't really a big deal, is the volume knob gets too loud too fast. Unlike the other controls which offer a smooth transition, the volume goes from zero to 60 waaayy too fast. I got this bass because I wanted the option of getting that "Music Man" sound but didn't want to shell out a lot of money for it. I LOVE the sound this affordable instrument delivers. I play primarily on Sunday mornings in worship services and I keep finding myself picking this bass over my Fender P/J and my Carvin B40. Both of which cost (originally) more than twice what this S.U.B. retails for. Just stunned!!

This is best bass in this price range, hands down!! It sounded great right out of the box and got delivered the same day I had a show to play! This bass plays and sounds better than my 2001 Mexican Fender P-bass, which nowadays costs twice as much as this bass! Great buy and surely will not disappoint any player of any skill range!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

I was down my local music store checking out a budget priced bass for my son. I was originally looking at Squier or Yamaha but the guy in the shop put me on to this Ray 4. Wow, it just blew the rest out of the water - the active pick-ups are so much more punchier than the others I tried. Even on the sometimes "dead-zone" of the 7th fret or above of the E string on lower-end basses, this bad-boy stayed sharp. Don't waste your money on anything else in this price range. Looks cool too!!!!

Excellent Bass. Well weighted and balanced. Quick action. Excellent sound; Musicman sound and tone qualities. Excellent value. Can be used at any venue. The quality of the amplifier is important to get the most out of the bass. I use a Line6 750 watt at 4ohms with 1000 watt speakers. The overall sound and versatility is amazing.

Cannot believe the quality at this price!!! I am used to Jazz basses and the Sub Ray4 neck is very close to it. What i like best is there are no dead spots on the neck. The volume and tone is so consistent throughout the whole neck. It came very well set up, just a few tweeks to make it mine. It sounds great either practicing solo or playing live with a group. Highly recommend the Sub Ray4!!!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

I was amazed with the quality, playability and sound that you get from this bass. I've owned more expensive basses from Fender and even Musicman that weren't this great. But for fairness sake I will compare it to something in the same ballpark price wise. The cost is similar to the OLP line Musicaman licensed a few years back, but quality wise it blows away my OLP bass. It has been a very long time since I have been this pleased with parting with my hard earned money. I am really glad I opted for a new Sterling SUB Ray4 rather than buying a used something else.

I had one of these before and loved the way it fit my hand the first time I picked it up. I ended up selling that one and playing a couple others in the meantime. With arthritis a major factor I was not happy with the others and longed for another MM. I love everything about them especially the way they feel and sound. Getting straight to the point.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

I''m a Fender man (play a MIM P bass) I've admired MM basses but don't have the $$ so I've wondered about these. Finally got a chance to take an extended test drive on a few of these SUB models. I was expecting these models to be MM as Squier is to Fender.
Fit and finish are good. They are a solid build with a good feel. Heavy but not overly so.Neck has a good feel. Chrome and knobs are very cheap, even for the price. Inferior to Squier's stock hardware. The tuners and bridge seemed adequate for their intended uses. Mint Green looked very cool, but that's a matter of taste.
A lot of reviews say they were great out of the box, I played 5 including a 5 string and all were badly in need of a set up. Not a point against IMHO, At this price point you shouldn't expect good strings or a good factory set up..........and you won't get either. Every single one had a bad volume pot, every one.
Wasn't expecting much from the single bridge pickup. Boy was I pleasantly surprised! This thing sings, deep rich tones with a variety of settings through the two tone knobs. Any issues with other aspects of this guitar were more than outweighed by that great sound. I'm considering pulling the trigger just for recording.
In closing if you're prepared to put in a little money and a little work into this bass you'll have yourself a great instrument suitable for any occasion.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

This bass should cost way more than what it does. You get SOOOOO much for so little here. I have been a Fender guy for many years. I own a Jazz Bass that cost be $1200.00. I have always loved the Stingray design and sound and they have been consistently recommended by my musician friends. I decided to buy this as my first jump into the Music Man line and I could not be happier. This bass plays better than my Jazz Bass (and this is coming from a guy who has been a sworn defender of Fender for my entire playing career). The finish on the back of the neck is beyond awesome. I play Fender because I hate painted necks. I hate how my thumb sticks to the neck and have been a Fender player for years as a result. This is actually a smoother neck than any Fender I have played. The humbucker is an absolute BEAST and sounds so good and clear. The attack of the pickup is solid and I could not be happier with the sound I get from this bass.

Buy this whether novice or experienced. You will most definitely not regret it at any point!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Electric Bass Guitar:

I cannot say how much I love to have my hands on this bass. After setting it up and pushing the truss rod adjustment to its limit to get the action low, this baby is a beast. If you are after MM tone and feel and want to keep most of your money your pocket, this is the ticket. Throw on a new set of your favorite strings and drop the pickup according to your preference of how hot you want your output and let it rip. I have had the Ray5 for 2 years and never loved it. I found a deal on a used Ray4 and once I picked it up I fell in love. The 4 string spacing at the bridge seems much more natural compared to the narrow 5 string spacing. I have rekindled my fire to play and I am even getting some play time in with the 4 string on gigs where I have always played a five. Sound great with the bass knob just below midpoint and the treble right in the middle. Leave all your amp settings in the middle.

Okay, I was originally having a problem with the pick guard of this bass guitar scratching too easily. I got in touch with the company and found out, TO MY AMAZEMENT, that this pick guard comes with TWO protective plastic coverings. I've never encountered a product like this with TWO protective plastic coverings.

Once I peeled away the second plastic protection for the pick guard my only problem with this bass was solved!!!

Besides needing a basic intonation and action set up adjustment and a bit of a truss rod adjustment it plays awesome!!!

BTW: The action adjusting allen wrench and the truss rod adjustment tool are taped onto the inner box part

Unless something unexpected happens, I now give this bass guitar 5 stars and recommend it to ANYONE who wants a high quality bass at a great price!!

Over the weekend I played one of these for ten minutes and in the 11th minute, my mind was made up...I was trading in my old OLP stingray bass for this one. I got the black with maple neck. It has a fantastic tone for clean, low tones, or for slapping, which is what I really have fun with. Great electronics, great tone, and tons of punch. I would say the only drawback is that since it has a smaller (and lighter) body, it doesn't fit snugly into my old OLP stingray case. That's ok, I'll retrofit some foam to make it snug. Besides, it's in my hands more than it's in the case. Highly recommend.

The SUB Ray 4 is a cheaper version of the Stingray and it delivers in spades. The pickup is amazing. A big fat growly humbucker with high output. The satin neck is very comfortable and does not stick. The neck is fast and feels like a Fender Jazz bass neck. The tuners are solid and stay in tune. The truss rod can be adjusted with a wheel at the base of the neck which is by far the most convenient mechanism. An amazing value for the price.

I tried this out at a chain store before I ordered it. The tone was head and shoulders above the base models of all the basses in the store! The active electronics give it the extra push off the cliff... I own the SingRay 5 and it is my main bass. I wanted a 4 string with a Jazz neck for a different vibe. I got it with this bass. Sure the American version does have a better finish, this starter model is worth having around. I did come in a box, with just cardboard for bracing, but it was not damaged.

For the price, it doesn't get much better. The electronics are solid, if a little hot (you'll keep your volume in the bottom 1/4 most of the time). My bass had some small blemishes in the wood that are only noticeable by someone looking for it, and some of the screws for the pick guard came in at an angle so they're not quite flush (both are not shocking in a cheaper bass). The neck is smooth and quick (jazz style), and it's fantastic for slapping. It's the best mass market bass you can get in it's price range.

Easy to play jazz style neck, hot electronics, light and well balanced.

I have been playing for 27 yrs. Struggled to find that sound and feel that this bass offers. I have owned Fender Jazz bass's, Ibanez, Gretsch, Spector, Steinberger. All good bass guitars but the Sterling comes through.

I play a variety of styles of music. Classic Rock, Country, Reggae, Calypso, Soca, Salsa, Merinque, Blues & a little smooth Jazz

Needed a slight set up and new strings. No problems, no complaints. My intentioned ratings are 4.75

Looking for a second. I own the maple fretboard now I will get the rosewood fretboard.
