I saw this bass advertised in my Bass Player magazine, and I was intrigued because Tobias is a high-end bass manufacturer, and I couldn't believe it when I look on Musician's Friend and saw how inexpensive it was. I pretty much discounted it since it was so inexpensive. However, a couple weeks ago when I arrived at band practice, our singer showed me her proud new possession, a Toby. Naturally she wanted me to put it through its paces at practice. I did, and I loved its fast neck and particularly its light weight. I just had to have one. I bought a used one from MF's sister store, Guitar Center for a song, and it was every bit as nice as the one our singer got. What is really amazing is that it has a bass and treble control, but not active electronics. I don't know how they do this, but it means you can have the tone control of an active bass without worrying about the battery going dead or the electronics simply pooping out at a gig. I played a 3-hour gig with it Saturday and it worked great, and my back and shoulder thanked me. I love this little bass. Now, if you are looking for fancy hardware, wood, paint, etc. you won't find it here. However, who can see that but you anyway? It looks great up close and at a distance, and sounds even better. So, if you need an inlayed headstock and contrasting binding and so forth you won't like it, but if you want a great little guitar that won't kill you with its weight and sounds just great, then this is the guitar for you. Parents note: it is as inexpensive as you are going to find, and you will not have to trade up once your budding bassist gets past the "beginner" stage. I have been playing professionally for about 45 years now, and I haven't outgrown it!

I have loved the Tobias shape for years but just can't bring myself to pay the price. Then I found the Toby series online! Fortunately a local shop had one I could try first.

Seeing it in person made me realize that it was no Tobias. Sure, it has the basic outline of a Tobias but that's it. The thing is boxy and has very little of the rounding that makes Tobias basses so appealing. The tone knobs have a dramatic drop-off in the first quarter turn and then very little, a sign of cheap pots. Tone-wise, it was just okay.

What I loved about it was the neck. On the same visit I tried $2000 basses and all felt like I was playing with a 2X4 after playing with the thin, comfortable neck on this bass. For the price it might be worth it take buy this bass and put it's neck on a better instrument. Hmm.... sounds like a project.

Comments about Tobias Toby Standard-IV Electric Bass:

I bought this bass to keep in E flat because I dislike changing tunings on more expensive instruments. It's never going to compete with those, but for the money it's hard to go wrong here. I've played a lot worse basses that cost much more. The fit and finish is exceptional for this price range. The neck is buzz-free and fairly fast, but I'm having to get used to no fretboard inlays - only dots on the side. It's a very light bass, and somewhat lacking in low-mid punch, but it has fairly bright new strings on it, so that's a controllable variable. I only gave it a 4 for two reasons: The neck inlay thing, and the bridge pickup is stuck in place, probably due to inadequate clearance - fortunately it's at the right height. I played several of the Deluxe model as well, and they all seemed pretty consistent - I just didn't want active pickups, and these are passive. Take a look at these if you're a beginner or on a tight budget, or just need a specialty bass for certain things. Possibly a good platform for experimenting with electronics too.

Bought this for my girlfriend to learn on. Compared it to other small body basses in this price range. Narrowed down to the Toby and the Yamaha RBX170. Both are great basses, but chose the Toby because she wanted white. I really liked the way it felt when I compared both at the store. She will be getting it for Christmas, so we'll see how she likes it. If she doesn't I'll be keeping it for myself ! Awesome little bass!

This Tobias surprise me because of the Price. It feels like a Seven Hundread' range bass. Great punch! I love the electronics. Lightweight. Even doesn't have the in-lays, don't panic, dots are over the top fret arm... Excellent, I felt like I steal this one from MF, because of the price :)

This is an amazing bass. I don't know how this bass can cost so little. Some people might get a little thrown by the shape of the upper horn or the position of the rear(body) strap button, but this makes it perfectly balanced. When I received it, the action was a little too low. I set it up and put on some flatwounds. All I can say is WOW!

I bought this bass hoping to be something awesome to learn on and jam, and this one has delivered so far. It is super fun to play, and I can see myself using this one for as long as i can. The only problem I had was with shipping, I live in Canada and ordered from the United states before and never took as long as it did coming from here. Totally worth the wait though :)

I bought one of these for my bass students to use and was pleasantly surprised with its decent playing and ergonomic qualities. Superior balance, light weight and pack-leading comfort overshadow the cheap commodity level PUs and controls. it still sounds pretty good with a nice JB thwack and is more than good enough for beginners. Very Nice for the price.

Comments about Tobias Toby Standard-IV Electric Bass:

I've been wanting to play bass for a while now, and when I finally saw the deal on this instrument, I jumped on it. Some other reviews mentioned that the quality for the price blew them away, and I agree.

The neck is smooth, the body shape is comfortable, and the pickups sound high quality to me.

There's definitely some things that show it is a lower-end instrument (ie. blotchy stain on the edge of the fingerboard), but that's cosmetic.

There was a significant amount of fret buzz between the 1st and 7th frets when it arrived, so I adjusted the truss rod over time, and it appears to have corrected most of the buzz. It's a slight annoyance to have to do that, but not unexpected.

One thing that is still unresolved... I have a strong feeling that the pickup selector knob on my instrument was wired in reverse. When I turn the knob counter-clockwise, thinking that the focus will shift to the neck pickup, producing a mellower/softer sound, everything gets louder and more pronounced. I've contacted Epiphone/Tobias about this and they haven't responded.

Aside from that pickup selector issue, this is a great instrument.

Im happy, it was a returned blemished item but overall it was in great condition and anything that was even slightly wrong i fixed myself. The frets were a little sharp but i polished that down in a hour and they are fine, most people wouldent have noticed much. Otherwise i use this to record bass tracks at home and am very satisfied.

Comments about Tobias Toby Standard-IV Electric Bass:

Honestly, I don't know how they produce this bass for this price. Presently surprised when I unboxed it. Looked great, plugged it in and it sounded fantastic. A little bridge adjustment and it played like a dream, couldn't put it down. This my second one be cause I liked the first one somuch, I had to have another. The first one I purchased was the deluxe. I would recommend spending the extra 50 on that model, the tone is way better with the preamp. The only fault for me is, there was no center detent on the tone pots to use as a reference point. Therfore I upgraded the preamp. That's just me I'm used to having that reference point on all my other basses. As for ease of play, these are second to none. No fret work had to be done, no sharp edges on the frets and they are leveled very well. Minimal step up and it will play as good as any 1K bass you can buy (unreal). Loved the first one so much I had to have another. I did up grade the hardware as well, but that's just me. It's not that necessary for you normal player. I gig 6 to 8 times a month and these never get left behind.

Comments about Tobias Toby Standard-IV Electric Bass:

I got this bass in alpine white and it looks great, there were no marks, dents or scratches on the body and no problems with the electronics. I only have 2 problems,

                  1. The sound is not that great, as soon as you turn the bass down from full or you turn up the treble a little the sound loses all its depth and doesn't sustain for too long which makes riffs like RHCP - Californication a little hard to do (Not impossible just more difficult than it Is on other bass guitars)

                  2. The other problem is that the volume and tone controls don't have numbers on them, this is a personal preference but I find that I can't accurately judge were the treble and bass is set without fiddling with the nobs for 2 or 3 mins ;)

All and all the bass is great for students to get the ropes of playing and see whether they want to continue, but I would recommend getting a better bass if you decide to keep playing as this one is really only good for practicing on your own or jamming with some friends.

Using it for recording But plan to use it to play out. I finds some styles may demand the sound of this bass.
