Comments about Yamaha RBX170EW Electric Bass Guitar with Exotic Mango Wood Top:

This instrument is a solid gateway into the realm of bass guitar. The price point is in-line with the features and quality, but the variety of tones available help push it past other basses in this range. The ability to dial in just the right amount of each pickup will give you much more sonic choices than just the basic one pickup/one volume/one tone knob configuration found on other basses at this price.

My only negative has to do with the rough fret ends on the model I purchased. Nothing a little time with a fret file can't cure and for the quality of everything else I don't mind the effort.

I'm primarily a guitar player who plays bass when necessary, but I feel very pleased with this bass among the numerous basses I have had over the years. Good for the beginner, good for those looking to branch out into the bass world, good for someone who just wants a great instrument for a little cash.

Comments about Yamaha RBX170EW Electric Bass Guitar with Exotic Mango Wood Top:

A friend of mine is a professional sax player and wanted a bass so he can see the band from that perspective.

He never asked me first if he should buy this Yamaha bass. I would've told him no.

Anyway, I did a set up on it, and noticed that it needed a lot of work - This is new out of the box, mind you.

Yamaha Indonesia has the WORST quality control I have ever seen !!! The neck pickup was dead, all the wiring was wrong, and the tone pot was bad. And they let this go to market ????

Comments about Yamaha RBX170EW Electric Bass Guitar with Exotic Mango Wood Top:

Loaned my bass to a (so called) friend many years ago and never saw him or my bass guitar again. I decided to get another bass to use for my home recording projects and came across this WINNER! This bass is PHAT! I've done more shopping around than I care to discuss. For the money, looks and quality out of the box, all I can say is "Don't Blink". If you miss this deal; shame on you. Intonation was dead on. For passive electronics, the pick-ups kick major bootey. I like the unfinished neck because gloss finishes, while playing bass guitar, drag on my hands when they sweat. I have always been impressed with Yamaha products but this bass guitar has really made a better than positive mark. For all you doubters, don't let the "Made in Indonesia" stamp fool you. This is top quality level gear.

I am 53 years old & have been playing the drums since I was 8,(self taught) new to the bass. This bass sounds great, looks great, feels great & keeps in tune even with the stock strings it came with. As a drummer I know what a bass should do & sound like. I would have to say this bass is at the high end of a biginer to middle intermediate range, & for the price, you can't go wrong! It is beeing played through my Fender Rumble 150 Amp which I can hear just great behind my DW Drum kit when a friend came over to try the Yamaha RBX170EW! He has been playing bass as long as I have been playing drums & loved it. Well I hope I helped any drum guys who wants to explore the Bass Guitar. I am having alot of fun with it. Great Value Very Happy with it!!

I'm very pleased with the Yamaha RBX170EW bass. I'm budget concious, but require quality. This bass is exactly what I was looking for. The sound is great, with plenty of versatility. The feel is solid, smooth, and comfortable. The look of the Yamaha RBX170EW is amazing. The mango wood top is gorgeous. I researched many bass guitars in this price range, and nothing comes close to Yamaha's quality-to-value ratio.

I really can't believe how good this thing plays and sounds on all my amps. It is awesome to look at and doesn't disappoint to play. Actually plays better than my squire std jazz with no fret buzz and only 1 or 2 frets that are slightly high. The exotic wood is by far the best looking of the choices for this one. Pay the extra 20.

Comments about Yamaha RBX170EW Electric Bass Guitar with Exotic Mango Wood Top:

I bought this bass because I needed an affordable bass to replace my broken Fender Precision Bass. This bass is awesome. I play it through a Peavey 115 300W bass amp and it sounds amazing. The body shape gives you great access to all the frets and it's got a fast neck so moving up and down and moving up octaves is a breeze. Playing this bass unplugged is a different story however, as there is quite a bit of fret buzz, though none of it plays through the amp. Construction feels very solid for a bolt-on neck. It's a durable piece of equipment that I'm not afraid of breaking when I gig with my band.

Comments about Yamaha RBX170EW Electric Bass Guitar with Exotic Mango Wood Top:

I bought this bass Cat 4, meaning it had serious damage, for fun, as I like to fix musical instruments. It had the tone controls pushed through the body, and the nut broken. I fixed the tone control, fabricated a sort of J-bass looking piece of plastic from a pickguard to cover the damage, and made a new bone nut for it. It is now a great little guitar. I like it because it plays very well and has excellent tone, with deep bass and good treble as well. The P and J pickups are really nice. The competition is the Squire P bass I suppose, so a comparison is in order. The Yamaha actually has a better, deeper P-bass tone than the Squire, plus the versatility of the additional J-bass pickup. It also has a modern 24-fret neck with cutaway for easy reach, compared to the old short Fender neck. The wood is less bulky and more modern looking as well, and it is about 2 pounds lighter, which means a lot to an old guy like me. The bridge is similar to the Fender, but the tuning pegs are the enclosed type, and are not great quality, though neither was the Squire I had. So, all in all, I really like the little guy, and I sold the old Squire P-bass I had. I still have my MIM Fender P-bass, because a serious bassist has to have one, but I rarely use it unless for studio work that requires it. I have much better basses that I use for gigs and recording, but this little guy will be my backup.

                      - Body has denser wood than regular RBX170, which enhances tonal quality.
                      - Pickups sound surprisingly good for such an inexpensive instrument. On par with the Squire PBass, sound wise.
                      - Hint: Try with your favorite new strings
                      - The little bar behind the nut is to take tension off of the head stock & neck. It can cause action to be higher at the nut when strings are new and not quite broken in yet.
                      - Don't be afraid to lower the action a little at the saddles as it may be relatively high from the factory.
                      * Have fun!
