Comments about Yamaha RBX170Y 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

First off, I have been a paid musician for about 20 years. I play guitar, bass and piano and have recorded and gigged regularly for most of the last 20 years. I play original alternative, covers, rock, metal and jazz and have also played country and reggae in my distant past (not always bass). This bass sounds great, and has excellent fit and finish for the money. Most of all, this bass is tough. I could use this to kill a dozen zombies and it would not go out of tune. I also have a Jackson, an Ibanez and this is more durable and reliable than both of them. I have recorded many times with my first one and after 10 years of recording, gigging and general abuse, I finally killed it. I replaced it with an American Fender P lyte with top of the line active electronics, that fender did not withstand half the abuse that the Yamaha endured. My RBX 170 has now been relegated to back up duty at gigs and the occasional recording but it is always ready to fill in if I break a string during a set. This bass is unrivaled if you are looking for bang for the buck.

Comments about Yamaha RBX170Y 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

Needed a bass for a 60s garage band reunion and wasn't gonna spend a lot. Won't be playing in public so didn't need top of the line equipment. The guitar arrived within a week of ordering and was packaged just fine. Plays great right out of the box. Love the variety of tones with the pickup's. Couldn't be happier for the price.

Comments about Yamaha RBX170Y 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I have played synthesizers for about 35 years. I also learned to play rhythm, lead, and bass guitar over the years as I actually started out as a violinist in grade school. I have played in professional live bands, and also am a professional recording artist/recording engineer in the Los Angeles area. I primary make synth pop tracks and utilize synthesizer bass tracks; however, I wanted to get a bass guitar to get a different type of sound on certain tracks. Many bass guitars were too high priced for me. I save my money to produce and master songs as well as to create music videos for release and distribution to networks and Vevo. I have a Fender Stratocaster and have played a Yamaha guitar in the past. I have had a Yamaha DX-7 synth and use a Yamaha ProMix 1 for my live mixing board. I know Yamaha builds good instruments/equipment.

The RBX 170Y was very affordable. I looked at a bass guitarist who played it on YouTube and I could tell is sounded great. The guitar's appearance is beautiful. Mind is shiny royal blue - perfect for on-stage live performance, and for music video productions. The wood work is excellent (I actually carve wood when I make R/C airplanes, so I appreciate the workmanship). The metal frets bars are NOT loose or deformed. The 3 tone/volume control knobs are a gun-metal color and feel like solid metal. The tuning pegs are plastic with a chrome colored coating. They look great, but might wear out after years of tuning with sweat in your fingers - not sure - just a guess. No big deal for my purposes, and I know I could always replace them with metal ones if I really wanted to. The 1/4 in ch instrument cable jack is moves very slightly if you push the cable 1/4 metal laterally back and forth. If someone was into heavy metal and thrashing around stage, it might is a problem. For the recording studio, I do not see this as a problem. One could always replace with a higher quality input later. You would still save money because the price is so low.
