Your passport to a new world of India's unique drumbeats and techniques.

The music of India is a rich source of rhythmic theory and tradition that remains largely untapped by modern drummers. Drum Atlas: India explains how the traditional rhythms of instruments such as the tabla, mridangam, and dhol can be adapted to the modern drum set.

Drummers start by learning the bol, which are spoken syllables that Indian percussionists have used for centuries to communicate drum patterns. Then, you'll learn the theory behind tal, which are rhythmic cycles of various numbers of beats. Indian rhythms are often composed of familiar patterns with 3, 4, 6, 8, or 16 beats, but sometimes delve into patterns of 5 or 7 beats that may seem unusual to a Western drummer.

Mastering this knowledge will improve your drum soloing, linear phrasing, and subdividing skills. The drum instruction also teaches you how to incorporate Indian rhythmic concepts into other musical styles, such as rock, funk, and jazz.

A Greate Place to Start

Comments about Alfred Drum Atlas: India (Book/CD):

Buy it and try it out. See for Yourself.
This book is probably the best place to START with indian rhythms on the drumset. I would not recommend attempting the Pete Lockett book until you have worked your way through this book entirely. Whats nice about this book is that it gives a slightly different approach than that of Pete's book; it includes folk rhythms, such as that of the Dhol tradition of drumming, its emphasis is slightly more on North Indian (Hindustani) rhythms whereas Pete's book is predominantly from the South Indian (Carnatic) tradition, and its not as "Western" i.e. breaking everything into component parts, which can be useful but sometimes loses the soul of the whole. Overall this book is the best place to start, especially if you are unsure how deep you want to get into this or are not an advanced drummer already. You could easily work through this book with a drum teacher and most of it on your own as well. I would say get this book FIRST, and if you feel passionate about it and want to learn more don't hesitate to pick up Pete Lockett's book on the subject. Additionally i recommend suplimenting these with The Gateway to Rhythm DVD by John Mcglauclin, the Rhythm of Tabla book by Aloke Dutta, and Trichy Sankaran's book on Konnakkol. One more good resource is the book Ancient Traditions Future Possibilities which includes rhythms from africa and indonesia in it as well.

This book gives you a taste of indian rhythms. Nowhere near as comprehensive or daunting as Pete Lockett's book on the subject. I highly recommend it as a starting point for learning Indian rhythm. What's especially nice about this book is it contains folk rhythms and not just classical tabla rhythms. Before attempting the Pete Lockett book or if you're unsure whether you like the indian thing or not, get this book, as its easy and quick to work through (as long as you can play your kit well).
