Comments about Alfred Drum Wars - Book & DVD:
I have had some lessons from a private teacher who has done me some good. My teacher has gotten me into books from Charles's Dowd, Jim Chapin, Ted Reed, Charlie Wilcoxon, Jim Blackly....
It has been difficult for me learning to read the way my teacher does. But after approximately 3 years I can now read a bit. So when we then take the time to review a book by a favorite rock drummer or anyone else, this enables me to sight read a bit and actually be able to get something from what's being presented.
I bought this book mainly for Vinny's riffs. I have Carmine's Realistic Rock and drum fills books. In this book I wanted Vinny's ideas or chops. I like page 46 and the different triplit and 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom with one foot as Vinny is a single bass drummer. Vinny also prefers some ghost notes on top with his sticks too to add some dynamic to it. I also wanted this book to see how he uses his bass drum in the intro of his solo as I forgot to ask him during his clinic. I also enjoy the way that Vinny and Carmine here present the truth about opinions of drum soloing and how deep down inside we all want to usually (except for my private teacher ;p) ), This book suggests the idea or format to build a signature solo and affords plenty of figures that one can apply to his or her own approach.
Every drummer should read to some extent. I also recommend finding the hottest drum teacher in your home town and take lessons.
