this guitar DVD is helping me greatly. i still havn't gotten too far into it though. the best way to use it is to focus on one part at a time. first get the warm ups down, then go to speed and accuracy tecniques and so on and so forth. This DVD is very educational and don't worry about trying to figure anything out, it comes with a tab book on the inside of the case. John Petrucci is a wonderful guitarist and a great teacher. i can feel myself getting faster and more accurate. he's not like a lot of guitarists who try to teach you stuff using things you may not have, for example: a seven string guitar, a floyd rose, a 12 string, an 8 string, or a double neck. he keeps it strictly 6 strings and no floyd rose(to my knowledge). overall, this is the best DVD i've ever seen, he's extremely thorough and he takes things one step at a time and slows it down for you then slowly speeds it up. have fun everyone, i hope you really enjoy this little gift from Heaven

This is the 1st guitar instructional DVD I've ever purchased. I bought it because I'd heard it was one of the better DVD's out there on playing guitar. It *is* helpful, it seems adequate, and I feel it is worth it if you are a beginner, but the first thought I had after watching it was: if this is the best DVD on the market, I'd hate to see the rest of the stuff out there.

Excellent DVD

By Razor Rex

Comments about Alfred John Petrucci - Rock Discipline DVD:

This is an excellent DVD if you need some instruction for beginners or are in a rut for intermediate/advanced players. I have to agree with past reviewers, the stretches and warm-up section on the DVD has by far made my playing take an extra step up. It's amazing what a few things before you even begin playing can do to your whole practice or gig!Unfortunately the downside is that the DVD gets very advanced very quickly and you really need to pace yourself and get a firm grasp on each section before moving on else you will not be able to get the full benefit of the next section.BTW -- If you are buying this DVD, you might as well scroll up and buy a METRONOME also, you will want it and need it FOREVER after this!

Warm Up!!!!

By Satch*rulz

Comments about Alfred John Petrucci - Rock Discipline DVD:

I did not realize how important the warm up section was when I began playing. My guitar teacher actually had me watch the warm ups at the beginning of the first few lessons. Now I can definitely tell a difference when i do not warm up. May sound stupid but it works. Great video, but does skip to a little all out to soon for me.

The best support for begginer-intermediate players

By S, Qin

from Columbia, MO

Comments about Alfred John Petrucci - Rock Discipline DVD:

The DVD is very helpful in determine your suitable measure of practice. Petrucci tells you many aspect of how he would personally practice also, making it very valuable! My only problem was that John went from slow speed to full out fury, there aren't any thing you can compare to if you've just begin to develop your speed, but not fully developed. Overall, the DVD rocks and it is a greeeaaat educational product, I'd recommend it to anyone, other than active professionals.

Comments about Alfred John Petrucci - Rock Discipline DVD:

If practiced every day, it will help out, however an advanced player would be past most of whats in the video. It does open the mind to some fun practices though.

Review

Comments about Alfred John Petrucci - Rock Discipline DVD:

This is a very good instructional video. John Petrucci is actually a good teacher as opposed to just blowing you away with his technique. The only reason I didn't give it all 10 stars is because he kind of advances too fast. I've been playing for about 8 years, so I'm no slouch, but he basically plays slow and then completely full speed.

Awesome. Simply awesome. Petrucci is a master of guitar technique, and I could feel myself getting better as I watched it. Two hours of pure gold. I use the warm-up techniques every day, and the section on scales is extremely helpful. Buy this D.V.D.

Amazing teacher

By Sultan_of_Shred

from Columbus, Georgia

Comments about Alfred John Petrucci - Rock Discipline DVD:

Most people know how amazing of a guitarist John Petrucci is. But teaching guitar is a LOT harder than playing, I'd know, I've been teaching private guitar lessons for over two years myself. John Petrucci relays his techniques in an easily understandable way, and teaches you how to grow as a guitarist. If you're a beginner this will probably be tough to follow at first, and I think this DVD is most effective for intermediate guitarists looking to advance towards becoming great guitarists. I find humor in John talking about playing 16th note solos at over 200 bpm, but then again watching this DVD and using Petrucci's practicing techniques can really get you up to that speed if you're willing to put in the time.John Petrucci's an amazing guitarist and a great teacher, this DVD will aid you a good deal.
