I have studied this book for the past 25 years, I have been through books 1 and 2 many times, I haven't got book 3 because it was sold seperately. An example of what this book can do for you. Imagine hearing a song on the radio and whistling along with it. You don't study to whistle, you just do it and it is in key and so on....This book has taught me to do this on guitar, play my very thoughts. It is worth every penny, there are no old favorites in the book, you just learn to play, improvise, and become a better overall musician. If you just want to do a few fireside singalongs or something, get a tab book, If you want to go on to greater things, even become a composer, this book will keep you busy for as long as you live..

My teacher started me on #1. I had 4 years of piano so I knew how to navigate notes. There is a fundamental disconnect between the book and how most guitarists view the instrument. The guitar is not a piano. The guitar is an instrument where patterns are more important. Patterns define how a musician moves their hands and how chords are connected. 1-4-5 blues has simple patterns. Holdsworth Jazz has complicated multi-key multi-time signature patterns. This book is not a good way to learn either. If you are buying this for your child, make sure it fits their learning objectives. If playing Rock is what they are passionate about, DO NOT start with this book. It will very likely KILL their passion by turning something fun an inspirational to something dull and perspirational. There needs to be balance in any learning program. The objectives of these books are not for most students.

Comments about Berklee Press A Modern Method for Guitar - Volumes 1, 2, 3 Complete Book:

A Modern Method for Guitar - Volumes 1, 2, 3 Complete Book is a great book for sight-reading music. It has a ton of original music to learn, it's main focus is on sight-reading music. If anything, it has too much material. At over 400 pages, it is a big book. After buying this book, I am tempted to buy each of the three books just so I can put a thinner book on my music stand as I play.

Comments about Berklee Press A Modern Method for Guitar - Volumes 1, 2, 3 Complete Book:

I bought volume 2 first - only because that was the only volume the music store had in stock. I used it for a couple of years, then I got Vol. 1. Used that for a couple of years, along with Vol. 1 simultaneously. I'm actually STILL using both volumes (haven't bought Vol. 3 yet, am buying it now) -- and I have to say that these books alone showed me that playing guitar was to be my life's passion, my "Magnificent Obsession." Without these -- with a Mel Bay book, let's say -- I don't believe I would have realized just how far a determined player can go with a couple of good guide books. Of course, these books suggested, indirectly, many other books and these have been invaluable, too. I agree that they aren't for everybody; but if you yearn inside to know what the great guitarists know, if you want a shot at going all the way, GET THESE BOOKS. Position playing, scale patterns, movable chords, reading, techniques of the greats - it's all here. Those reviewers who knock these books obviously didn't give them much effort. You reap what you sew. So, sew! Work. Buy volumes separately - yes! All-in-one is too bulky. Use other books in conjunction with these! Songbooks, fake-books, blues licks, jazz licks, all that. Kiss the sky.

    Read this before you buy!

Comments about Berklee Press A Modern Method for Guitar - Volumes 1, 2, 3 Complete Book:

This is a good book, very deep. However, I STRONGLY recommend buying all 3 books separately! This book weighs like 20 lbs, is very awkward to tote around, & it will take you a long time to get through all 3 volumes anyway! also, it's intimidating seeing this 300 page book in front of you! It seems you aren't getting anywhere! Take my advice, but each volume separately. The book & the contents are fine, but it is simply too big & cumbersome!

    A very useful book

Comments about Berklee Press A Modern Method for Guitar - Volumes 1, 2, 3 Complete Book:

What other reviews have said about this book is absolutely true. You buy this book if you want to go all the way. Don't use it by itself, though- it is boring by itself. If I were starting to play guitar again, I would get this book, a rock or metal guitar method, and a songbook. There is also some theory in the book that I have had to look up on the internet to get a clear explanation of- it is obviously meant to be accompanied by a teacher.

    Fantastic Book

Comments about Berklee Press A Modern Method for Guitar - Volumes 1, 2, 3 Complete Book:

I've been studying this book for around 4+ years, and I have to admit this is the best guitar book out there. It has exercises for everything. You have to be a really determined musician if you want to buy this book. There are no tabs for those of you who can't read music, but there are hundreds of exercises in this book that will make you better at reading. If you want to be an amazing guitarist and have the patience and determination, I would seriously recommend this book.

    A reading method only

Comments about Berklee Press A Modern Method for Guitar - Volumes 1, 2, 3 Complete Book:

I bought this book and was disappointed. It is not a guitar method. Rather, it is about reading and playing notes-and doing so a zillion different ways. There is no real instruction, just exercises. So, if you want to be a great sight reader, buy this. If you want to learn to play guitar, you'll have to buy something else.

Comments about Berklee Press A Modern Method for Guitar - Volumes 1, 2, 3 Complete Book:

This is a great book. I would only recommend this to an intermediate guitarist who is looking to learn how to read standard notation, and develop their general knowledge of playing guitar. It also would be best if you have a veyr general knowledge of reading music before you start this book, but a very basic knowledge is all you need. A beginner could easily get lost in this book. If you stick to this book and do a bit every day, by the end you will be a much more knowledgeable guitarist.

    A must buy!

Comments about Berklee Press A Modern Method for Guitar - Volumes 1, 2, 3 Complete Book:

As famous Jazz guitarist, Mike Stern, said ??Modern Method for Guitar Book is] the best method ever written for guitar.?When someone that well-known, that well-respected, comments on a book by the Berklee Press, you have just got to believe it.The ?Modern Method for Guitar Book? now includes a DVD-ROM, so players can understand it better. Even without the DVD-ROM, this book is still very clear with its explanations on various things such as scales, melodic studies, chord and arpeggio studies, how to read music, special exercises for developing technique in both hands, and chord voicing. If you don?t know where to start, START WITH THIS ONE! I guarantee this book is worth going through!
