A Consice Foundation for Single-Note Improvisation

Comments about Berklee Press Chop Builder for Rock Guitar (DVD):

Joe Stump's Shred Metal Chopbuilder is concise look at building excellent flatpicking technique. Mr. Stump is an excellent neo-classical, metal guitarist whose style reminds of sounds that fall somewhere between Tony MacAlpine and Gary Moore.Without giving away details of his teaching, the rudiments of his flatpicking mechanics are actually excellent and well thought out. My only complaint is that the subject of flatpicking as a whole is underdeveloped for newer players. I wish he would have covered his choice of scale shapes and why he chooses them. This is a major component that go hand-in-hand with flatpicking. He briefly covers CAGED, three-note-per-string and a combination of the two but doesn't get into the pros and cons of shape choices. I know that as a teacher at Berklee he has rubbed elbows with many great players, so it turns out to be a missed opportunity. He doesn't discuss holding the pick either for that genre of guitar. As an educator, I've had to go to great lengths to reach my conclusions about the philosophy of holding the pick by speaking to many guitarists in many genres. What I'm getting at is that in my earlier years when this genre was in its heyday, I wondered if there were better ways to hold a pick to achieve speed, this video doesn't give you the benefit of his experience if you're a newer player. On the plus side, you don't have to be a metal guitarist to get benefits of his mechanical instruction. His teaching can apply to any type of guitar style that utilized plectrum. I like the video overall, I think that you can take things from it to add to your technique. If you are looking to add licks to your collection, you will be disappointed. This video is about fundamental mechanics. Overall, he is not giving you fish, but rather teaching you how to fish for yourself.

Could be better

Comments about Berklee Press Chop Builder for Rock Guitar (DVD):

I was disappointed with this DVD. Lots of Joe shredding, but little instruction. Without onscreen tab or even finger closeups, it's almost impossible to see what he's doing. No real technique hints other than "use a metronome." Hope his classes at Berklee are better than this.

Don't Waste Your Money

Comments about Berklee Press Chop Builder for Rock Guitar (DVD):

All that is talked about is practicing with a metronome to increase speed. What guitarist has not heard that before. Joe can play but the teaching aspect of this dvd is not worth the price. If all your interested in is seeing Joe play, buy it. If you want an instructional video on how to increase speed, buy something else!

no special exercises at all, it is just him talking about the style of music, but there is nothing specific he taught at all.

Good for intermediate players

Comments about Berklee Press Chop Builder for Rock Guitar (DVD):

This video is better than others are giving it credit for. A lot of this may seem basic on first glance, but I was able to use the exercises to improve my chops. This dvd takes for granted that you already know natural minor scales. Most of the exercises are designed to be adapted by the student to minor scales that the student already knows. I would have given the features a higher mark had there been more lessons, but this dvd gives at most what can be considered 3 solid lessons worth, though I am sure some students can get through it in one sitting.

Comments about Berklee Press Chop Builder for Rock Guitar (DVD):

Good video, however, the teacher doesn't give a whole lot of insight... he basically plays something fast and says "Here, you play now."
