Excellent jazz book for intermediate players

Comments about Hal Leonard 101 Must Know Jazz Licks Guitar Tab Book with CD:

This is a great book for anyone who sometimes enjoys sitting down and learning a few licks, rather than a whole piece, and has been playing for while and wants to improve their jazz runs. The text goes through specific styles and periods of jazz, mainly via a chronological order, which to my mind is great, since it avoids that horrible notion of 'generic' jazz that too many other anthologies offer. Most of these licks will be challenging but rewarding for the intermediate player, and will offer a few new creative avenues for advanced players. They will be far too daunting for beginners, and I would recommend the other two books in this series and a bit of theory before buying it.Advanced players: Chances are you will learn something from this book. Even my bandmate who studied performance and composition in University of Toronto's revered jazz program, and is now studying with me at Harvard (though I'm not much of a jazz player myself), said he learned eight new licks in twenty minutes from this text, and created several more of his own from them that same evening. It fun to have around to pass the time when you need to kill ten minutes or so. Check it out.
