No Frills Instruction

By Ardiril

from Seattle

Comments about Hal Leonard 50 Licks Rock Style DVD:

If you can read at least read tab, then you should learn quite a bit from memorizing each of these licks, regardless of your level. The guitarists who chose these licks knew what they were doing, and the selection is well balanced between musicianship and performance; you get both chops and flash.
You get a DVD with each lick played fast, broken down a bit, played slow, and finally played at speed with backing. The DVD returns to the menu after each lick. I could not simply watch all 50 licks," first to last.

The written music portion of the licks is printed on a single 17"" x 22"" sheet in tab only. At first", I was a bit disappointed at this, but then realized I don't need a full book for something like this.
The DVD production is basic budget. I swear the bleed into the vocal mike would have made his guitar sound better than the one they had on the cab. However, the shots of his hands are well framed and leave few doubts as to what his fingers are doing.
50 good to excellent licks. Each has its melody and individual technique, and none are simple rhythm chops.Even if you don't remember them five years from now, memorizing new licks is an ongoing necessity. This package fills that void.

Impressive and helpful DVD!

Comments about Hal Leonard 50 Licks Rock Style DVD:

This is not necessarily for guitarists looking for MODERN ROCK licks. This is more of a Jeff Beck/Billy Gibbons style (which is what the description says). Now that we got that out of the way...this DVD is very impressive, and even has a live bass player backing all the licks that are shown. Licks are shown in detail (close ups of both hands AND all licks are played at slow speeds and explained step by step). Can't go wrong here! Buy it!

The Best of the 50 Licks Style Series

By Behringer

from Powder Springs, GA

Comments about Hal Leonard 50 Licks Rock Style DVD:

This is an outstanding instructional dvd! There are licks demonstrated from just about every style of rock lead guitar playing that I can think of. Tom Kolb is a great teacher as well. He shows the licks enough times at slow and fast speeds so you don't have to constantly keep rewinding to see the licks. He not only shows you the licks but explains the theory behind them and plays the lick in the context of a chord progression/song. Out of the four 50 Licks "" Style dvd that I own, this one is by far my favorite. I am very pleased with this product.
