Having played guitar for years and then a after a few years of not playing I am teaching a novice to play. This DVD along with the book of the same title can convey more and faster than I am able to explain by myself. I wish I had these tools when I grew up. Maybe I would have lots of money and been through drug rehab and a thousand groupies just for playing my axe. Just about anybody can get the light going off in their head by watching and reading. No matter if you have great skills or just a novice you can learn new and better way by using these tools. I know I had my eye opened while previewing the lessons. You can gain a lot of ground with these and make practice enjoyable. It has renewed my zeal for learning and I ordered the Fretboard roadmap book and CD for the mandolin that I just started playing. I am now playing scales and modes when without these great tools I still would be learning chords. Buy them and learn at a greatly accelerated pace. Take it from an old dog who is learning some very new tricks. I think I may get a resonator now and I have dusted off my five string Banjo. My wife has been impressed like I have and she is getting a lap steel guitar. You can never learn to much.Announcer

I've watched this DVD all the way through and was pretty disappointed. make no mistake this video is for beginners or rhythm guitarists that are trying to learn lead. not only that, but every song he plays is country and the licks he shows are mainly country licks and sometimes used for blues. It shows you how to do SOME inversions and some simple scales, but it doesn't go through scales hardly at all and doesn't do a good job of showing you how to actually do the scales. I have a couple instructional dvds and I hate this one. I'll be giving it away since it's to late for a refund (after opening it). So unless your trying to learn lead and you like country, SAVE YOUR MONEY and buy something else. I've been playing pretty serious now for about 5 yrs and didn't learn anything from this dvd. This will be the last item i purchase something featuring "Fred Sokolow".

Don't buy this

By James Mitchell

Comments about Hal Leonard Fretboard Roadmaps DVD:

This DVD has terrible production value, his set looks like it was done by a middle school art class. My biggest problem with the DVD is his bad left had technique. He holds his fingers too far over the fret, his fingers jitter and when his going from from one lick to another his hand moves erratically around like he's unsure of his next step. The problem with his technique is its hard to see what notes his is playing. Also the acoustic he uses has two dots at the 7th and 12 fret, and no dot at the third fret. This also makes it confusing to see where he is at. I'd advise spending your money elsewhere.

Great instructional DVD

Comments about Hal Leonard Fretboard Roadmaps DVD:

I've been playing long enough to have figured much of what is on this dvd on my own but nothing I've come across before has put it into this kind of perspective. These chord fragments have helped me easily figure out songs from Velvet Underground to Fleetwood Mac and everything in between. I wish I had found this earlier.

Best DD for advancing to that next level

By JC-7AGZZ

from Athens, AL

Comments about Hal Leonard Fretboard Roadmaps DVD:

Been playing for 30 plus years. I considered myself a fair lead guitarist, but wanted to get better. I've purchased oodles of instrutional material, most were very little help to really get me over that hump. I knew plenty of licks but just never got the basics of tying the scales together. This was the one that did it. This dvd shows how the scales tie into the mini chords all over the fretboard. Trust me, if you are a rhythm guitarist and know the chords and bar chords, this will take you to the next level and give you the basics for playing lead guitar all over the fretboard. Best guitar instructional dvd I've ever bought.

Rust Remover

By Magnus1964

Comments about Hal Leonard Fretboard Roadmaps DVD:

I hadn't picked up a guitar in a few years and when I finally got around to it, my playing was pathetic. Even though I've never stopped playing bass, the similarity of the instruments isn't close enough to make a difference. The physical memory needed to play good rhythm or a precise guitar break is a lot different.I was lucky enough to pick this DVD up on sale. I can skip over the very beginning of the video and move on to Mr. Sokolow's soloing tips. Playing along is a good warm up, and has proven helpful as an exercise prior to my own home recording. I'm sure there are a lot of musicians like me who put playing on hold while settling in to domestic life. Now that I have more time, but fewer people to jam with, this DVD helped me get back on track.

Very Informative

By lusus_vir-sE1OY

Comments about Hal Leonard Fretboard Roadmaps DVD:

Fretboard Roadmaps is a very informative learning tool. I had been playing guitar for about 2 years; not seriously. I could play simple riffs and power chords (enter sandman, stairway to heaven, etc.) but had no clue how to solo or play lead or what most of the notes on the fretboard were. I finally wanted to get better so i bought this DVD. After watching it, i have a better understanding of the notes on the fretboard. I can do some simple solo / lead riffs, and i know scales so i can stay in key with the song. I have improved about 150% in a about a week after watching this dvd. No video will make a person good at guitar, but this video gives you the right tools to practice with. Remember - knowing the fretboard is the first and most important step to mastering the guitar.

Maybe good for the beginner

By MuddShovel

from Gary, In

Comments about Hal Leonard Fretboard Roadmaps DVD:

I watched this video one time all the way through so I could write this review. I think if may be effective for a beginner to get a somewhat basic understanding of fretboard logic. But there are a lot of other instructional videos out there that are easier to follow, understand and apply. The guy knows what he is talking about but I think its hard to follow what he is talking about without covering some basic music theory.

The Book/Dvd make sense

Comments about Hal Leonard Fretboard Roadmaps DVD:

As someone who's hated virtually all guitar instructional material for over 20 years, I found this to be remarkably simple and straightforward. An exceptional tool for unravelling the mystery of the fretboard and making it your friend.
