I am new to the guitar but have quite a bit of experience as a vocalist so I'm familiar with music. I'm only on lesson 2 (of 20) and this program far exceeds my expectations. This is NOT just a program to learn a few chords and think you're a rock star; this is a professional, I'm-paying-money-for-actual-lessons program. Music theory is included throughout so you truly become a musician, not just a string picker. By the end of the course you not only know how to play, you understand what makes different sounds work together, how to build your own chords or determine what chord to use for a particular song. While you DO learn a lot of chords and playing styles, you also get plenty of exercises to build dexterity, finger strength and confidence. It takes hours of practice each week (beyond the actual lesson), and I'm hoping to keep up just doing one lesson a week. Steve Krenz is a talented musician who explains the concepts very clearly so it's easy to understand; not only will you be a much better guitar player, you might be amazed how much musical understanding you gain along the way!

Comments about Hal Leonard Gibson's Learn & Master Guitar Boxed DVD/CD Set Legacy Of Learning Series:

It is easy to follow and becomes progressively more intense as you get deeper into the program. Steve Krenz is an excellent, patient and very understanding teacher. If you're committed to learn to play guitar this is a great course. And, it pays to start here rather than search for the inexpensive Learn to Play books that only take you so far and leave you with more questions than answers

Comments about Hal Leonard Gibson's Learn & Master Guitar Boxed DVD/CD Set Legacy Of Learning Series:

If someone told me they wanted to get started on Guitar, I would absolutely recommend this course to them. I've owned the course for several years and continually find myself referring back to it. The course includes a book, many hours of lessons on DVD, CDs with backing tracks (an invaluable practice tool), and their website has an active forum where you can discuss the material with others and the teacher actually reads and replies. There's also a "Bonus Resources" package that goes along with this - it expands the lessons further and provides more depth with everything. I think the Bonus pack is well worth it. You can be a total beginner and use this course, and if you stick with it - you'll be a pretty decent player by the end. You have to put in the hours, there are no shortcuts, but this course is everything you need to get started.

My son (10) and I (34) are working thru this course. So far only on lesson 1 but I like how it starts. The instructor plays on an acoustic and we own electrics, so no mention of how pickups work, etc in the first lesson. But I feel good about the purchase so far.

Comments about Hal Leonard Gibson's Learn & Master Guitar Boxed DVD/CD Set Legacy Of Learning Series:

This is the best Guitar instruction course for learning without a teacher. I would recommend also getting the bonus DVDs, but if you don't you can download the Bonus Resource lesson book online for free. It may seem pricey, but a teacher charges 20-30 an hour, and this comes with over 40 hours DVD instruction, so it is worth it.

Comments about Hal Leonard Gibson's Learn & Master Guitar Boxed DVD/CD Set Legacy Of Learning Series:

The topics covered can easily allow a complete novice to get up to the level of competent player in about 6-8 months, depending on the individual. Inside of the first month, you will learn to read music in first position, and you'll continuously learn music theory. At about the half-way through point, you'll learn finger-picking techniques, then move on through different genres. I had several years of lessons and studied music seriously for 2 years, and this really solidifies a lot of concepts for me and very clearly explains the basics which I never fully grasped. What's also nice is that there are additional bonus videos which explain some of the Gibson history and manufacturing techniques, so that as you learn to play you get exposure to some other guitar knowledge as well. All in all, for the money, it's the best organized and produced video training tool I've seen in over 20 years of playing. I bought this to help me become a better teacher, and I will gladly recommend it to anyone I teach!
