Comments about Hal Leonard Mandolin Method Book/CD:
This was my first mandolin method book. Rich Delgrosso is a great and experienced teacher. I agree with his approach to teaching: reading music is a must. And he works as a teacher giving exercises in music reading as it is applied to the mandolin. He gives a very fair overview introduction of the mandolin's range in music: Bluegrass, Celtic, Scott,Italian, fiddle tunes, waltz tunes, handling tunes in 6/8 timing, etc. Delgrosso is an experienced teacher, this is a book that I still go back to for the basics. However, I already knew how to read music. I can see where this book would look overwhelming to a beginner. I recommend this book for everyone but used in conjunction with easier and more basic books. The CD is excellent in that he focuses on keeping tempo perfect --- that is important. Just listening to the CD is an experience in the histoy of the mandolin. A lot of work went into this book; it was well laid out and well thought out. This is not a preformance CD it is a teaching CD which makes it an excellent compliment to the book. I learned to read music in the days without this luxury of CDs (I was forced to read the music/rhythms). This method makes learning so much fun!
