Comments about Hal Leonard Queen - Deluxe Anthology Piano, Vocal, Guitar Songbook:
This book is ok, but it is not great. I originally bought it with the intent of learning a bunch of Queen hits to perform with a band of trained musicians. I could have learned the songs by ear (which would have taken a while), or looked up some tabs online (I don't really like tabs anymore because anyone can edit them, no sense of rhythm, they could be wrong, etc.), but I wanted to have some sheet music from a reputable source, so I could learn the songs on piano as well as guitar and so that it could be accurate.
Soon after receiving the book in a short ammount of time, I began playing the songs and quickly noticed to my dislike that the songs are not what are on the original recordings of the Queen hits. The book claims to be a Piano, Guitar, and Vocal book, but most of the songs are arranged prominantly for piano, and have been altered extensively. Not even Bohemian Rhapsody is properly arranged, which is a crime.
The "Guitar" part of the book is just open position chord progressions above the piano music.
You can tell that someone who really didn't care about guitar that much, just put the most basic chords above the music. Even the melody to the songs is sometimes altered from the original version. I understand some of the songs are hard to sing, but even some simple songs are rearranged. This book really seems to have been arranged with the intent of selling as a bunch of cheesy choral arrangements of rock tunes in order to keeps students interested in the class.
Eventually I gave up on the book and ended up learning "Bohemian Rhapsody" by ear during the spare time before my piano class. Overall, the book is ok considering the fact that the chord progressions are right, but the melodies, guitar riffs, and even the piano parts have been altered extensively. I ended up being disappointed with this book, but I guess that's because my expectations were different than what the book was arranged for. If I had wanted someone else's version of the song, I would have looked up tabs for free.
I bought this book along with an Aerosmith book that is the sheet music version of their album "O, YEAH! Ultimate Aerosmith Hits". They are both from Hal Leonard, and origianlly I thought the Aerosmith album was going to be a let down, but it ended up being amazing! Go figure. I'm going to write a review for it as well.
