Step into the Soviet symphonic world through the life of Shostakovich.
In this program, Andre Previn talks about modern symphonic works and the new sophisticated language of musical expression. Shostakvich encountered the peril of being an experimental composer under Stalin's regime at a time when "difficult" composers incurred official displeasure and were known to disappear overnight. Certain that he would be arrested, he kept a small suicase packed and ready, but Stalin was too clever to eliminate Shostakovich. Yet when Shostakovich produced his Fifth Symphony, music undoubtedly triumphed over politics.
Previn conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in some of the most popular and important works of the concert repertoire. In rehearsal, Previn discusses each composer and his music, using pictures, anecdotes, and orchestral excerpts to underscore his comments. Each program concludes with a complete and uninterrupted performance of the symphony. British Academy Award Winner.
