Comments about Mel Bay Easiest Drumset Book:
In 1993, My father bought this book for me after I begged him. It was one of the best things he ever did for me. This book teaches the very basics of drumming, which is exactly what a beginner needs. It breaks the basics down to the simplest terms. It teaches how to read drum music, but also teaches various ways to remember the patterns, which helps the novice drummer to learn how to play by ear and by reading. I was playing consistent beats within weeks and in a few months was getting the attention of the neighborhood musicians. Less than 2 years later I was competing and winning in drumming contests, talent shows, and local & high school bands. Granted, this book did not make me a good drummer, lots of practice and more advanced learning aids really helped, but this book provided the strong foundation that I needed to begin, and without that, I would have given up like I did other instruments before this. I began teaching drums on the side in 1999 and I use this book for my students. I am now buying it for my 7 year old so, because it is simple enough for anyone who can follow simple directions. I recommend this book for any beginner. Any learning drummer is going to have to eventually buy other books and learning aids to learn more complex things like different rudiment, fill-ins, and double bass, but all good drumming begins with the basics, and this book is (in my opinion) better than any other one out there for those basics.
