I have been playing guitar/bass guitar for around one year, and own over twenty instructional DVDs and some twenty-five instructional books (I do have 3 years on the piano). From my perspective, this is one of the best DVDs in my collection. The DVD gives multiple blues rhythms, then plays them to a backing drum and bass accompaniment. Then the instructor performs solos over the combination. The solos are great and inspiring. Techniques used during the solos, such as bends, vibrato, double-stops, and slides, are taught as well. I used to hate the blues until I got into guitar last year, and this DVD has really fueled my appreciation of the genre. Slowly but surely, I am learning to solo "blues-style," and I find great gratification in being able to play the relatively simple rhythms the DVD teaches. You do need to make sure that you have the little booklet that comes with it or you may be lost if you are a beginner.

Although this DVD claims to be for an advanced player, it is not. In fact, it is rather rudimentary, explaining concepts more appropriate for beginner to intermediate levels. The other truth is that the instructor is not a very good blues player either. He is quite obviously a hard rock player first and foremost. Much of this video is therefore less geared to blues in the vein of SRV or Albert King and more in the vein of other metalheads turned blues a la Gary Moore. This was a waste of my money.

You can do this!

By FlickVideo

Comments about Rock House Blues - Riffs, Rhythms, and Secrets DVD:

John is a great teacher and this DVD showcases his straight ahead approach to learning the Blues. He shows you what you need to learn and how to play it. But then you have to practice. It's all here... power chords, pentatonic scales, riffs and backing tracks. There's enough material here to keep you learning and improvising for months, if not years. Well worth the investment. The only downside is that there's no .pdf file on the DVD to print out. The small form factor of the booklet is not that convenient. I photocopied mine and blew it up to 8.5x11... much easier to read and follow along. But that's a minor point.I'm on my fifth copy because I keep giving it away to friends who want to learn what I know.

It's So Fun To Play The Blues!

By Becjr

Comments about Rock House Blues - Riffs, Rhythms, and Secrets DVD:

I always want to learn how to play the blues. This DVD has helped me get started! Basic chords, rhythm styles, turnarounds. These things are in there. Easy to follow instruction. The booklet helps to keep up and practice while the DVD is paused. The web site - rockhousemethod.com - has great resources to support the DVD and even expand the instruction via the message boards. The ability to replay the lessons over and over until I was comfortable with moving on has been an invaluable experience for me. I took my time going through the disk and couldn't be happier with the results!Great job Rock House!

Easiest Way to Learn

By jjricker

from Dallas, TX

Comments about Rock House Blues - Riffs, Rhythms, and Secrets DVD:

This DVD's coverage of playing techniques gets you immediately into the subtle nuances that make each blues player unique. One thing I really like about this DVD?and the whole series?is the way John is constantly encouraging you to be creative and develop your own style. He always reminds you to take ownership of the material you're learning. Combine this with All the support online and this is the most complete program I have ever used.

Comments about Rock House Blues - Riffs, Rhythms, and Secrets DVD:

It is an awesome DVD, as are all Rock House Method DVD's I have used. As someone else mentioned, John is really great at encouraging people to find their own style. It is very thourough and easy for me to learn from since you get to see, hear and read all the stuff, as well as play along with all the stuff. Anyone who plays the blues or a blues based style of music (rock, jazz, etc.) should have this DVD.

Comments about Rock House Blues - Riffs, Rhythms, and Secrets DVD:

I bought this and the book was missing. I emailed rockhouse and provided all the info they requested, and 6 weeks later still no books. It's too hard to follow without them, as it's pretty advanced, and no slow demonstrations to speak of.I would not recommend this to anyone.
