Comments about Humes & Berg 112 Stonelined Pixie Straight Trumpet Mute:

The pixie mute is the traditional, orthodox way to produce the wah-wah sound that jazz audiences learned to love in the 30s and 40s. It is used together with a rubber plunger or other cover to produce a crying sound. The pixie mute / plunger crying sound is featured on the vast majority of Tom & Jerry cartoons, which were produced with the aid of very competent jazz musicians. You may be interested to know that the Wah-Wah guitar pedal was invented by people who were trying to imitate the sound that jazz trumpeters made with the pixie mute / plunger combination. The rest is history. Specifically, people became very much more interested in guitars than in trumpets. However, there is still a place in the sun for a trumpet solo with lots of emotional personality, and this pixie mute is how to get there.
For some reason, pixie mutes have become hard to find. I doubt that you will find one on display at a music store , even at a horn store. Thus, I was delighted to find this one in the catalog at Musician's Friend. It does just what a pixie mute is supposed to do: It generates a sound with rich harmonic content that you can then sweep with your plunger or other cover. It has to sit entirely within the bell without protruding, or it will prevent the plunger from covering the bell. You will need to carve off about half of the cork in order to properly position the mute fully inside the bell. I did that, and it worked like a charm. WAH-WAH-WAH!
