Comments about Humes & Berg 119 French Horn Stop Mute:

A standard good-quality stop mute, at a much better price than comparable alternatives. Gives good stopped tone over a wide range; not exactly the same tone as handstopping (stop mutes hardly ever are), but perfectly suitable in most orchestral contexts, and much easier than handstopping for getting reliable strong stopped tone in high and low registers. Good accurate pitching too. One caveat: the manufacturer's packaging describes it as "non-transposing"; this is wrong, it transposes at the semitone, like most stop mutes. But transposing is something every horn player needs to learn to deal with anyway; so for experienced players this is a non-issue, and for learners it's a useful lesson.

Comments about Humes & Berg 119 French Horn Stop Mute:

I expected to pay for an expensive model recommended on a horn site. Saw this stop mute and it was almost half the price. I figured it was worth a try. Used it to play a show, days after receiving it. Due to the music, some of the stopped notes could not be done with the mute (no time to switch), while most of the stopped parts could be. Used my hand, which I have done since my college days, when it was the only option, and tuning and projection were typically issues. This mute allowed for more projection, and the tuning was much more stable than using the hand. I cannot imagine the more expensive stop mutes would provide appreciably more. Don't spend the extra money. This mute will do the job.
