Coming from using an Alteri gig bag, the Protec offers substantially greater protection. It is a little bulky but only when compared to the compact MB or the other Protec screw bell case. It is probably too thick to fit in a plane's overhead bid. Otherwise, it is about as good as it can be. The main compartment will easily accommodate large wraps. I was concerned if it would hold my Lawson Fourier – about as large as it gets, and it even necessitated using one of the Alteri pads to secure the horn. I can carry both mutes, my straight mute fits, but just barely, in the exterior accessory pouch – zipped closed, and my stop mute fits great in the main compartment, even wrapped in a chamois. I keep my small accessories (valve oils and slide grease) in a drawstring bag that rests in the bell. The zippered music pocket accommodates a large folder. Nice thing about the backpack option, over the Alteri, is that you keep the music pocket zipped closed. The Alteri straps were attached inside the music pocket so you had to keep it open. The shoulder strap works great. However, it is designed to be carried oriented in an upright position as pictured, as there are only the D-rings are on either side of the top handle. This orientation can make it hang a little low. To hang it oriented on its side, which I prefer, I simply attached a medium-sized carabiner and ring assembly to the backpack strap attachment loop.

This is an excellent case at any price, but the cost makes it even better. It is sturdy, well made and provides more storage room for music than most other competitive cases.
