Comments about Schilke Standard Series Small Shank Trombone Mouthpiece in Silver:
This mouthpiece, with it's greater mass and larger throat than standard Bach or Bach-type mouthpieces produces a very full, "big" sound in comparison to others. The quality of the plating is also very good and durable.
The Schilke 47 trombone mouthpiece is roughly comparable to a Bach 6 3/4C. I say roughly because the Schilke has a lot more mass in the cup and a larger, more open throat. This produces a broad, "big" sound. The smaller than a 6 1/2 AL cup diameter and slightly shallower cup makes it an ideal mouthpiece for a lead player, eiter orchestral or commercial. It has an easy high range without experiencing the compact sound produced by smaller mouthpieces..
Schilke mouthpieces are built to exacting standards. The plating is excellent. I have both gold plated and silver plated 47's.. The gold plate version produced a slightly mellower sound, perhaps more suitable for orchestra. The silver plate produces a somewhar "brighter" sound. I use this for "commercial" applications.
Schilke mouthpieces are slightly more expensive than most other non-custom mouthpieces. However, for me, they produce a better sound, worth the extra cost to me.
