Comments about Softone Bass Trombone Mute:
The Softone trombone mute is easy to carry, easy to throw on and off, and sounds old-school enough to let you ditch that cumbersome clamp-on bucket and derby It's not exactly a Swiss Army Mute—it's not at its best as a plunger or wah-wah, although it can sub for those in a pinch—but it's close enough for jazz. Although the Softone is sometimes touted as a practice mute, it's not really quiet enough for that by my definition. That said, when fully wrapped over the bell it makes a courteous warm-up mute before a rehearsal or gig. I currently play in a big band and the entire bone section uses the Softone. Given its compact versatility and price, no brass player's gig bag should be without one.
