OVERVIEW

The MXR M-101 Phase 90 Pedal gives you classic phasing with variable speed control. Add shimmer to lead passages or jet-plane resonance to muted strumming. Not just for guitars; it works well with bass, keyboards, and even vocals. Vary the speed from a subtle, long cycle to a fast, watery warble with endless vintage vibrations in between. The MXR M-101 is powered by single 9V battery or Dunlop ECB-003 AC Adapter

This unit virtually launched the phase craze.

This is a very nice pedal for the price point. Its small so it fits on a pedalboard very well, uses standard 9V/100mA power so most pedal power units work great. These MXR pedals (I've got a bunch that use this same size box design) all have a slight drawback. (For me anyways) The power plug is on the side right next to the input jack. On a crammed pedal board it can be a pain. The tiny rubber feet on these size MXR pedals pull right off so you can stick a velcro strip on easily. The main thing is the tone. Its quite nice. Ive certainly heard better but for a basic phaser this is a fantastic unit. Like the other MXR pedals in this housing, its very tough, being made of all metal with a quality switch that seems to last very well. The drawback to this pedal are not really a drawback because its obvious before you buy it, but, anyways.... the drawback is the single speed control knob. It doesn't have any "features" really. You just adjust the speed of the phasing sound with the knob and thats it. It doesn't seem to color your sound when its off. I don't know if its true bypass or not. One final note: this pedal sounds best used between your guitar and the front of the amp. Trying to use it through an amps effects loop will not work well. At least not for me. If you need a simple, durable, nice sounding phaser, this one will work great.

I love this pedal. The only reason why it gets a 5 for overall rating is because of an issue that this pedal has. I bought one of these a month ago and thought something was wrong with it so I sold it and bought another one about 2 weeks ago and it still has the same problem. If you use this pedal in a clean tone with Humbuckers it sounds distorted. If you run the pedal through overdirve or fuzz it sounds fantastic. The only way to get this pedal to sound good in a clean channel is to use Single Coil Pickups. Thankfully my guitar has Coil-Splitting so I waws unable to avoid the distortion. After doing some reserch I found out that this re-issue has a Low Input Threshold and because of that if you use Humbuckers the pedal sounds distorted. So beware of this if you are planning on purchasing this pedal and you only have humbuckers. But other than that flaw, I love this pedal. Sounds very organic and rich.
Only one knob. You only need one knob, thats the beauty of this pedal. It adjusts the speed only. This pedal does not need any other knobs, it is that easy.
I don't think that regular use as a studio musician or giging musician will break this pedal unless you abuse it. Built like a tank.
it is a great deal considering Boss pedals are more and they are not analog like this pedal it.

Comments about MXR M-101 Phase 90 Pedal:

When I got this pedal I was excited, I had wanted one for about 4 years and finally decided to just break down and get one. After playing it for awhile I was a little let down, in addition to the phaser effect it gave a small gain boost that was undesired. I wasn't a big fan of it. I considered returning it, but then as I was about to bring it back I decided to play with it again just to make sure I wanted to get rid of it. All of a sudden I fell in love with it again, even with the small gain boost! I have it one with almost every song I play, it adds just a small flavor to everything you play!

Comments about MXR M-101 Phase 90 Pedal:

It doesn't have much control for the phasing, but that is not bad news at all. It gives a lot of nice phasing great tones. If you want more control over the effect buy another one. Nevertheless, I think you should get another one only if your music is based on this effect, that way you can have more control of it. Otherwise, this is a wonderful machine. I love the way it sounds with my distortion. With the clean sound, just with a little of it, sounds incredible too, specially for those slow songs. Another turn on is the price; it is very economical. Like I said before in other reviews, you can't go wrong with MXR. Among other good brands like Mad Professor, Earth Quaker Devices and TC Electronics, this is one of the best

I bought this to add some spice to my solos and to nail Eddie's early sound. It does it perfect. I set the knob between 8 and 9 O'Clock and it is just what I need.

Compact, affordable, simple to use and built like a tank. Most importantly - sounds great. I can't tell the difference between this and the EVH other than the paint-job and the price. I'm still very pleased with the original. It's the only one for me!

Comments about MXR M-101 Phase 90 Pedal:

I got this pedal to add texture to my sound. Now this isnt something you would want to use all the time...but it's surprising how often, at a low setting, you will use it. It adds flavor to a lead, and it adds "shimmy" to a rhythm. It's very similar to a flanger, but I find it to be more subtle, and useable. You can get that similar feel without it sounding so over the top. I highly reccomend this little pedal.

Comments about MXR M-101 Phase 90 Pedal:

The Phase 90 has a classic sound, giving you a little bit of crunch along with the phaser effect; however, it is certainly a one trick pony. You can't adjust the balance of the phased sound with the original input signal, nor can you change the range of the frequency sweep. You get what you get and your only parameter to change is the speed sweep. Versatile? Not at all. But if you like the sound, this pedal is great. Want more options? Get the Phase 100!
