Very cool mallet instrument

By Simon Spalding

from New Bern, NC

Comments about Trophy Wood Chromatic Resonator Bell Set:

While it may be intended as a low-cost substitute for a set of hand bells, I have found mine to be a very cool mallet instrument in its own right. I leave them in their box, and mount them on an Axman keyboard x-stand. Playing them with felt/wood Sonor mallets also produces a fuller, more professional sound -- in effect, a very affordable set of "mini-vibes". Of interest to anyone who's played Javanese gamelan--it also lends itself to Javanese "gender" tone-damping techniques, and sounds very like the "gender" and "slentem" when used this way. It's one of my favorite instruments and audiences love it too-- yet even with the stand and two sets of mallets, great for price!
