Comments about AKG Perception 170 Condenser Microphone:

I bought two of these for some cheap overhead drum mics and for recording acoustic guitar in stereo. So far they have been great. I've only used them twice but they have been very impressive considering how cheap they are. Very clear and sensitive. Obviously not as nice sounding as some high end mics but definitely worth it for the price.

Comments about AKG Perception 170 Condenser Microphone:

I learned the hard way that this type of microphones are NOT supposed to be used with Phantom power. Before you connect it to a mixer or a DAW interphase, make sure your Phantom power is off, otherwise you can damage internal components just like I did. Fortunately I had purchased an extended guarantee that was valid at the time of the incident so I got a replacement, but keeping up with extended guarantees can be very costly on the long run, so you better get use to double checking every time you connect.

Other than that, this is a wonderful mic to use with acoustic guitar and it is awesome with acoustic bass guitar. My only big complaint is the design itself. The finishing is so soft and the shape so straight that nothing guarantees it won't slip from a mic clip or shock mount. Therefore the 4 stars. Some areas of rugged or rubberized finishing would have solved the problem in my opinion, but then again, I'm a musician, not a designer.

Comments about AKG Perception 170 Condenser Microphone:

I was searching for what would serve as an overhead mic in my drum room at home. This mic fills the need. It provides the presence I was seeking and gives a real nice roundness to the drums (especially the toms) and adds sibilance to the cymbals using the EQ on the mixer.
For an inexpensive mic, the performance is more than I expected.
I will add that the pro at Musician's Friend was very helpful to me in choosing this product. The shipping service was very fast too!

Comments about AKG Perception 170 Condenser Microphone:

This is a phenomenal microphone. It was one of the first small diaphragms that i ever owned. I have used it in almost every application for both professional and home recording. This thing really sparkles on just about every stringed instrument out there. I always liked that it picks up exactly what sound is being put out. So what could possibly be wrong with it? The mic clip is trash. AKG must have missed something when they designed the clip because it doesn't come around the sided of the mic, more or less it just sits in there and you have to hope it doesn't fall. But one can only hope for so long. Countless times the mic has fallen out of the clip in mid-recording and smashed into the ground, cymbal, or whatever else was below. Needless to say the element was damaged and the mic was no good. I have gone through over 10 of these microphones in 5 years. But i keep coming back to them because i love the sound and it is affordable. Just be aware.

Clean, sharp sound from the Perception 170

Comments about AKG Perception 170 Condenser Microphone:

I'm happy with it and don't have any second thoughts. It is nice to purchase a product that is wrapped up good, in foam like the company cared about what they are selling. I made the mistake of purchasing a few cheaper microphones and I wasted time and money. I'm a fan of the Perception series.
Pad switch to handle high sound level environments - but I haven't had to use it.
Well built, sturdy construction. Feels like a quality microphone. Very happy with the crisp, clear sound this records.
This really is a good value. After using this for a bit I also purchased the Perception 220 and dropped the AT2020 I was using.

Comments about AKG Perception 170 Condenser Microphone:

I use this as a second mic for recording Acoustic guitar and or Mandolin in conjunction with a Audio-Technica PRO37. I think this mic is a fantastic value, it also sounds great for overheads on a live drum kit. I have a lot of microphone but for acoustic instruments I keep coming back to this one time and time again.

Good Mic, one died after 2 months

        By BD-kIggi

Comments about AKG Perception 170 Condenser Microphone:

I bought 2 of these for stereo drum overheads. They have worked fine. Have a nice warm sound and the highs roll off which i like. worked great on acoustic guitar too. But after two months one just crapped out on me. it works but makes all this awful noise, maybe some component got damaged. but i really didn't move it much, i simply unplugged it and set it up in a new spot then this happened. hopefully AKG give me a new one.
