This is a high quality inexpensive professional microphone. I has no frills, just a straight forward side approach, large diaphram condenser mic.
Note; it is not a true condenser, but a fixed charge plate condenser (electret condenser).
The fact that it is an electret condenser shouldn't scare you away tho, it isn't anything like electrets of yester-year with that tinny metallic sound. This mic does have a very warm natural sound with a lot of clear highs and no sibilance problems.
I won't compare it to a dynamic microphones like 58's and such because this is a completely different animal. It isn't supposed to sound like a dynamic mic.
Everyone has thier own opinion of what they like and what they don't, and sound is a very subjective perspective. Personally I think this mic ranks up there with the big dogs. It doesn't have quite the presense peak as an 87, but the high freqs do a more gradual climb starting at about 6khz I'd guess. Which gives it a nice subtle sparkle. It has a smooth frequency response thru-out it's range, which is very wide.
It is very sensitive, so you dont have to crank the gain to max out your VU's, and from what I see on the specs it can handle a lot of SPL's. If the sound pressure is too much, and this goes for any mic, and you're over-modulating, just back off a couple inches. LOL, real rocket science here. You don't have to be close enough to eat it to get a good sound!
OK, now the downers. It doesnt have a lot of whistles and bells. There's no pad switch, bass roll off, figure eight polar pattern knobs and buttons or flashing lights. It's just a simple cardiod side approach condenser mic. So what do you want for this price? Egg in your beer?
And just like someone else implied in here, just because it didn't cost thousands of dollars and carry a name like Neuman or Telefunken doesnt mean this isn't a full blown professional mic, it is! A beginner mic, yes it's that too. and if you are new to the recording word, this is a nice way to step up your game without breaking the bank.
The bottom line is, I got a great mic and didn't have to take out a second on my mortgage!
I use it for vocals, have a small home recording studio, I still like dynamics (57's) for miking the paper on my amps, but wouldn't hesitate to use this for an ambience/room mic. And drums, sure why not, it does cover a wide spectrum with lots of highs and bottom too. I have more years than I want to admit in recording studios, both as engineer and owner.
Everyones ears are different, and like I said in the beginning, what some think is garbage is a treasure to another. I hope you find the perfect mic that fits your voice or whatever needs you have. I personally am very pleased with this mic.
I haven't used this mic for very long, but it seems to be rugged and well manufactured.
Hard believe that a mic of this quility sells for so little.

This mic is a great mic for newby's. If you've been recording for a long time, you could get away with this mic, but don't think it's going to sound like a high end mic. I only gave this 3 stars, but you won't be unhappy with this mic. You can use this mic with just about anything. Vox, guitar, woodwinds and so forth. I think I would prefer the RODE NT1 over this Mic. I have both, but if you have the extra money, go for the Rode!

Comments about Audio-Technica AT2020 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone:

I've had one of these for years and have just purchased two more for stereo / drum overhead use. "Newbie-friendly" is a great description for this mic, but don't let that bias you against this mic if you're a more experienced hand. The 2020 strikes a great balance - for me, anyway - between totally neutral / transparent voicing and adding just a bit of "whoa" factor to most things you put in front of it. I do *not* think this is a bright mic, nor does it have the inflated hype / sizzle / fatiguing artifice of a lot of condensers in its price range; it just sounds naturally good. I've had good-to-great results with these on vox, drum OH / Glyn Johnsian configs, guitar cabs and acoustic, and often prefer my 2020 for these apps to significantly more expensive / better-known condenser mics I have in my stable (with the caveat that I don't own any four-figure-plus mics and probably never will). The 2020 is more tolerant of less-than-optimal surroundings / room treatments than most condensers, in a way that reminds me of a good dynamic with more "forward throw," and often does surprisingly well even when I've thrown it in front of something for a throwaway guide track without giving a toss about correct placement. Honestly, while there are definitely better mics out there (particularly if cost is no object), the 2020 is the best overall value I've found in a mic in 25-ought years of home recording, and I would recommend it to first-timers over more expensive "prosumer standards" like the NT1 without hesitation.

We ordered these for our church choir per suggestion from another former choir director. So far we have had no problems (other than a little feedback, as our monitors are were kind of close). We ordered 2 to start with and have since ordered 2 more. We have been very satisfied with them, they have fully served their purpose.

Comments about Audio-Technica AT2020 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone:

There wasn't much range in this microphone, and for the price, it doesn't provide any real value. I've spend a lot of time in post trying to salvage tracks that recorded poorly. The large diaphragm does pick up a lot of noises outside the recording room.

You should monitor the effort you put into the AT2020, as your recording can get distorted easily. I've used this microphone for 3 years now (over 300 hrs. of use) and the sound quality has degraded sharply over time.

This is a solid mic at any price. It is a GREAT mic for this price range. Is it pro-level? Of course not. But you wont find anything close to this quality without spending at least twice as much. This is a solid mic for a home studio and really does sound good. I find it to be very transparent, and pleasing. The fact that it isnt as sensitive as some higher end mics is actually a plus in a home studio environment where you probably arent working in a soundproof room. If you have a good interface with a decent mic pre, you will be very happy with the results.

Been Playing and recording music for the last 30 years...had many types of mics. this one holds a strong value. very (straight to the point) type microphone. very clear, got nice high end sheen to vocals. great for acoustic instruments and can take a whack with some substantial SPL's. If you don't have one of these.....go out and buy 2...great for overheads.

Great mic for the price. I love micing acoustic guitars with this. It does a good job with singers, but only in the mid range. The diaphram can't handle high range stuff very well. But, it's great for the price.

The AT-2020 is excellent for the price range. I have been able to use it on vocals, acoustics and even guitar cabinets. It gives out detailed and clear sound. It doesn't take away from your instruments and it doesn't add anything. It is like a blank slate. There is not much in this price range that would beat the AT2020. The stand mount it comes with seems to be sturdy as well. The only real downside is that it didn't come with a shockmount.
