A versatile pro-audio cardioid classic.

The Audio-Technica AT4033CL Large Diaphragm Condenser Mic uses transformerless circuitry to virtually eliminate low-frequency distortion and enhance the capture of high-speed transients. An 80Hz high-pass filter easily switches between flat frequency response and a low-end roll-off that diminishes ambient noise and popping with closely-miked vocals. Requires 48V phantom power. Includes AT8449 shockmount.

Features
  • Cardioid pattern
  • Frequency response 30-20,000Hz
  • Low frequency roll-off: 80Hz, 12dB/octave
  • Maximum input sound level: 145dB SPL, 1kHz @1% distortion; 155dB SPL, with 10dB pad (nominal)
  • Noise 17dB SPL
  • Dynamic range (typical) 128dB, 1kHz at max SPL

Put some precision into your mic locker with this sonically excellent and highly affordable model.

Best For Acoustic and Vocals

By FiberGrass

from Montgomery, Alabama

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4033CL Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone:

For our traditional Bluegrass Band, we use the one mic set-up. This mic performs well in any venue inside or outside. We set the mic about 48 inches from the floor, and the vocals and instruments sound great. For the money it is hard to beat.

Like a Corvette

By Gregory-yapDu

from South Carolina

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4033CL Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone:

I first fell in love with the 4033 while listening to a bluegrass band in an outdoor concert. Since that time, I have seen many other bluegrass bands with this mic. It has actually become irritating to me to see a great band using ?good? microphones. The nice things about this mic is the clarity and warmth of the vocals with multiple singers singing around the mic. I have seen this used in a variety of outdoor and indoor concerts. I have used the 4033 setting up several BG bands in a small club and outdoors and for multiple singers in a contemporary Sunday service. There are several advantages to using the 4033 and a few things to be aware of.Like a corvette, this baby will do you right under certain conditions and you should treat her right. In a live setting, feedback can be an issue. So, small night clubs with a wall several feet behind the lead singer is NOT optimal. However, I have seen the 4033 effectively used in a small club where the band was in a corner. The cardioid pattern is very sensitive and you can have multiple singers 2-5(ish) feet around the mic. Singers can easily move closer in and back out for emphasis on particular singers at specific times. Some reviewers have stated that this mic can be too crisp and not warm. That may be true in some regards, but in the BG world and in using it with multiple singers such as at church, my opinion is that this would be a hard mic to beat.

All-around performer

By RainKing

from Minneapolis

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4033CL Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone:

I own a pair of these mics and use them primarily as drum overheads and on acoustic guitar, but have also recently tried them on a very critical acoustic grand piano recording and they performed beautifully. Tone is crystal clear and present, never harsh or tubby. I have roughly 15 large-diaphragm condensers, including Mojave, Peluso, Oktava, Lawson, AKG, and other models from Audio-Technica, and the 4033/CL holds its own against some of these costing 5 times as much. For the money, I have not heard/used a better mic for such a wide range of instruments. It's as versatile as anything out there!

Fantastic mic for... just about anything.

By Suburban Rhythm

from Asheville, NC

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4033CL Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone:

I got this mic about a month ago along with the PreSonus FireStudio Tube (also awesome, by the way), and the results have been absolutely ridiculous. Whether I'm using it for vocals, acoustic guitar, mic'ing amps, live recordings, recording brass, whatever... everything comes out fantastic. Case in point: I set this up in my living room during a band practice at a TERRIBLE angle, bad positioning, and much too far away, and it STILL came out great. Couldn't be happier with this purchase, and I recommend it to anyone, no matter their budget. Excellent addition to any microphone collection.

i compared this mic side by side with a rode ntk and a shure ksm27, it absolutely blew both of them out of the water. it was clear, almost scary clear, my recordings didnt sound like recordings, they sounded like someone was right in front of you. all ive used it for thus far is vocals, voice overs, asn acoustic guitar. All turned out great.

All-purpose excellence

By Adam-YcS8p

from Seattle, WA

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4033CL Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone:

I own two of these microphones. They are Japanese-made, and the excellent build quality reflects that. I've used them on a number of sources including distance miking of concert bands, drum overheads, vocals, acoustic guitars and acoustic bass. I also played with it on kick drum and even some foley work.In all instances, the sound captured by this mic was never less than usable, and most of the time ranged from good to excellent. A pair of these work phenomenally well as drum overheads, and mounted on a T-Bar they do a great job of capturing stereo acoustic guitar. Female vocals sound wonderfully smooth, never thin or harsh. I even used them in live sound reinforcement of a string trio outdoors. With only two mics in non-ideal positions, the sound still came through with detail that made the sring players take note. There were no problems with feedback on the properly-tuned system, and the instruments found their place naturally. It has a VERY hot output; on a rock kick drum, it was outputting line-level. It was connected to a Mackie 1402-VLZ, and with the gain all the way down, I was hitting +10. (There is a 10 dB pad on the mic, which was not engaged.) Summary: Connect it to a nice preamp, place it, and let the music happen. This microphone will not disappoint.

The smartest money you'll spend on your studio.

By RubyTuba-vW29F

from Park City, KS

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4033CL Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone:

It's always true: If you want to get the most improvement for your money in a sound system, buy the best speakers you can afford. If you want to the the most for your money in a recording setup, buy the best mic you can afford. If you're using a 4-track cassette unit, it may be hard to justify spending upgrade money on a mic that costs more than the recorder. All I can say is "DO IT!". This mic will make a bigger difference in sound quality than any stepup recorder. I've got stuff I dashed off on the fly, using a Tascam Porta 02 and this mic, that sounds better than stuff I recorded back in the 70s with a Teac 3340 and a Sennheiser 441.And when you DO upgrade down the road, this mic will help you get the most out of your new recorder as well.I thought nothing would ever take the place of my old Sennheiser 441, but after two months with my 4033, I sold the 441 on ebay. This mic exceeded the 441's capabilities in every way - wider, deeper, higher, cleaner - you name it! I use it for everything. For vocals, you'll need a pop screen. For everything else, place it where it sounds good to you and hit "Record".

Fab Mic

By kirilirik.com

from Salt Lake City, UT

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4033CL Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone:

I have had this mic for over 5 years now and it truely rocks. It is ultra transparent, and has very low self noise. It is so quiet that it can even be a bit cold at times. A good preamp (preferably tube) is a nice companion. I use it on vocals, grand piano, nylon and steel string acoustic guitars, violins, cellos, as well as various percussion elements. It is very diverse and works great on nearly all studio applications. I would put it in a similar quality category as the AKG 414 (minus the switchable patterns) for half the price. I highly recommend this mic.
