I've used this to record vocals, guitars, as a room mic, drums...you name it...this thing sounds incredible... I also recorded Thunder, Lightning, and rain...and it was movie quality... This is what the pro's use for a reason...I have a small home studio and consider this one of the best investments I've ever made..

            Comments about Audio-Technica AT4050 Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone:

I have other mics, some much more expensive. In the studio, I always feel obliged to try my other mics, but most often I wind up using a trusty AT4050. I've yet to find a situation where it doesn't perform at least as well as anything else in my locker, particularly for vocals, both male and female. The multipattern capability makes it useful for live stereo recording, too, in pairs -- particularly mid-side stereo. Incredible value -- punches far above its weight class!

I do classical music location recordings and I have been elated with the results from my 4050s (2). The quality of stereo image and detail is equal to and sometimes surpasses microphones that are twice or three times the cost. These are more than an incredible value they are an invaluable tool for the work I do.

                Comments about Audio-Technica AT4050 Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone:

I've owned a pair of 4050s for many years and they continue to be used on every session, both along side many more expensive microphones and many times instead of those other mics. They have a neutral character without being "boring" or clinical. They've been favorites for drum overheads, male vocals, horns/sax, guitar amps and room mics.

I had one of these on loan to me for a couple of months and when it was time to return it, I immediately ordered a new one for the studio. Clean, transparent, no nonsense. I've used it on everything from vocals to guitar amps. One of the most versatile mics in my cabinet. It's ability to capture the nuances of a baritone voice is quite impressive. Get one!

This mic is amazing for the price! I got mine used, which was priced even better. Nice, crisp tone for vocals and acoustic guitar and also great on guitar amps and percussion. I use it at home on all of these elements and sometimes on vocals in the studio.

                  Years Later...

                  Comments about Audio-Technica AT4050 Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone:

I purchased this mic maybe 4 years ago. I've bought many, but month after month, I get more use out of this mic than any other. A great microphone is not necessarily something you notice when you're recording...you notice it in the final product, and for vocals and acoustic guitars, this has become an absolutely essential piece of gear for me. I bought it for $500, and if it should break, I will immediately replace it for whatever price AT decides to charge for it.

                  Accurate sound capture...great mic!

                  Comments about Audio-Technica AT4050 Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone:

I purchased my AT4050 back in '02 when I was first breaking into the digital realm. I considered the KSM27, but I did not want the 'color' it offered (not a bad thing, just not what I wanted) since I have a dbx586 tube pre and a 1231 EQ that I can shape with. Recording acoustic guitar with this mic in single and near/far configurations yields exceptional results. I added my dbx166xl to the chain and vocals do well. In a good sounding room, try the figure 8 pattern on vox by singing close to mic and adjust mic distance/placement in room; it captures natural reverb beautifully. Does great on bass amps, distant mic on drums (djembe & congas...awesome response) electric guitar amps, and sax. Over-all, I LIIIKE it. The 4 1/2 stars on features was for the case - not terrible, just a little flimsy for a mic in this price-range. A great addition to my mic locker.

                  AT 4050

                  By Marty Krkic

                  from Newcastle, New South Wales

                  Comments about Audio-Technica AT4050 Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone:

The AT 4050 is great at registering & recording guitar amps. I own a VOX AC30 2X12 AMP and a MARSHALL DSL100MLB with a MC412 Half Stack. I mic each amp with one of these mics and a pair of SM57's. The AT 4050 is great because it doesn't "colour" the sound coming from my amps through the PA system at my church or when we record. So I get exactly the sound I want.I previously used the Sennheiser E906, people I know were saying that it was a great mic, butto me it was to "coloured", I'm not saying it's a bad mic, for my personal taste the AT 4050 is better, it's about 2 1/2 times the price the of the E906's, but it performs better, and simply put the lonely pair of SM57's needed some help, so I bought 2 AT 4050's, I'm glad I did. I own a couple of Fender Telecaster's and Gretsch G6128T-DSV Duo Jet with Fixed Arm Bigsby in Black. God bless.

                  A Quality Workhorse mic!

                  By 1979musicman

                  from Houstion, TX

                  Comments about Audio-Technica AT4050 Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone:

The AT4050 is truly the best all-around mic for the money! It offers clarity in sound quality. Not the warmth of a tube mic - but a nice tube mic pre or some clever adjustments in the EQ'ing can take care of that. The multi-pattern control addresses a wide variety of recording needs. The -10 db pad cut and the bass roll-off switches add value to certain recording situations. This mic can be used as a main vocal mic, instrument and percussion mic. Have had great results in all areas of recording. If you're not going tube - like a Rode K2 - or you're not ready to lay out several hundreds more for a Neumann - the AT4050 is a perfect answer to any recording situation!
