Comments about MXL 550/551R Studio Microphone Kit:

I got this mic pack around a month ago, sounds amazing for the price.
It is very cheap but very well built.
The 550 (large diaphragm) is very well suited for vocals, it has a bright sound and can help get the vocals to stand out in the mix.
The 551 (small diaphragm) is great for guitars and overheads. I used it to mic an acoustic guitar, placing it from the 12th fret aiming to the soundhole, and got a pretty satisfying sound. could go great if you put the 550 on the soundhole and the 551 on the frets, haven't tried yet but will as soon as possible.

Comments about MXL 550/551R Studio Microphone Kit:

I am by no means an experienced audio tech when it comes to condenser microphones. However, I have done a lot of recording using conventional mics. These condenser MXL's produce very clear, bright but not harsh vocals and acoustic tracks. They are perfect for my bass voice and sapele guitar because they improve the brightness and clarity of the guitar and of my vocal instrument. This is one of the best investments I've ever made in terms of equipment.

Comments about MXL 550/551R Studio Microphone Kit:

This mic pack is a great value. I got it when it was on sale, but even now (more expensive) it's a great value! Both mics are very clear and crisp and they look absolutely stunning. They are very light which can be a good and bad thing but again, the sound quality is amazing. Buy this, you won't regret it!

Comments about MXL 550/551R Studio Microphone Kit:

Nice foam-lined snap-lock case to travel & store these in.
The red paint is a bit on the cheap side, but looks nice from a few feet away (don't buy these if you don't like seeing mics on stage or in a video shot).
I haven't had much chance to work with these, but they seem ok so far. I got them on a Stupid Deal of the Day, so at that point the price is very good for what you get. Even at normal retail, these are decent. Too bad a shock mount isn't included for the 550. Also needs a pop filter screen for vocal use.

Comments about MXL 550/551R Studio Microphone Kit:

I didn't realize it needed phantom power until we went to record. Luckily my drummer had the right equipment to get these powered and working. Definitely something that should be kept in mind.

The 551 picked up my cabinet perfectly. Still need to play around more with the 550.

Comments about MXL 550/551R Studio Microphone Kit:

We have a great mic collection but hesitate to put a M49 & KM84 in front of a novice musician. This pair
sounds great, has a pretty good gain structure, and behind a nice pop filter records well.

Comments about MXL 550/551R Studio Microphone Kit:

Just got my mics today and so far I am quite impressed. Tried them out on a bunch of different sources and the sound is quite good. I got the mics on the deal of the day and I now have two very useful condenser mics. The 550 works great on vocals as well as an ambient mic for drums. The 551 captured the natural sound of my acoustic guitar well. It also works as a drum overhead. So far so good. I still want to try recording some electric guitar. I'm guessing the 550 will sound the best, but will give 'em both a try.
