My nephew in Texas was interested in starting his own recording studio in his house, but was on a limited budget for mics and other recording equipment. Thus, he purchased this mic package. On a vacation to their house, i was able to test them out. As most people would be, I was skeptical at first, but when I tested them I was pleasantly surprised. The 993, when used properly (in this case as an overhead for his drum set) produced a clear and resonant sound. As for the vocal condenser mic, I was also surprised by the quality of the sound of the mic; the sound reproduction was something I would expect out of a much more expensive microphone. MXL has really offered one amazing deal for someone interested in starting their own home studio.

I've owned the 990 for over a year now and overall it has been a good mic. I've kept the mic inside of it's padded case when not in use, and it has recently started acting up, the diaphram has come loose some how and makes alot of noise if it's not perfectly positioned. Considering the price for the two mic package, it is a good value. Not much for craftsmanship.

Comments about MXL 990/993 Studio Package:

This is a great mic for a cheap price. I love its clear sound. It is great for a fist time recorder or someone who is looking to start a home studio. I have 2 sets of these and they are going strong after 3 years. The case is sturdy also that they came in. The only problem I have is I pick up radio signals sometimes but I do live by a lot of towers.

GREAT PACKAGE

Comments about MXL 990/993 Studio Package:

What a great package for the price. Seriously. They may not be "top-of-the-line", but that doesn't mean that this little bundle doens't deliver good results. Just make sure you use them with some good mic preamps to maximize their potential.

Great pair of mics

By Stegosaurus Rex-B_2pE

from Berkeley, CA

Comments about MXL 990/993 Studio Package:

I bought this mainly because I needed a cheap vocal mic, but I also wanted something that I could record instruments later on. The 990 is a fair vocal mic, but lacks enough high end. However, for anyone that does any work on recording, this is easily fixed by adding a bit using EQ. Doing this, I found the 990 to be very usable and clear. The 993 is also very clear sounding on guitars, though I haven't tried drums yet. For the money, this is very much worth it. Just make sure you know what you're doing when you process the audio from these mics, and you'll be getting some sweet sounds!

Worth the price

By Pauly-QLbbM

Comments about MXL 990/993 Studio Package:

These are not top of the line studio microphones, but for the price they are phenomenal. The 993 is by far the better of the pair, and it delivers great sound as a drum overhead or at the twelfth fret of an acoustic (gets boomy near the soundhole, but the 990 can hold its own. Quality gets a downgrade as when I received the 990 there was a capsule mounting screw that had come loose and was rolling free inside the screen. I put that back in and other than a rather vanilla frequency response and slight warm up period to clear out the hum the mic has been great ever since.

990 - Vocals, Room / 993 - Overheads, Crash, HH

Comments about MXL 990/993 Studio Package:

I love this both mics. I use the 990 to record the vocals or i use it to record the bassdrum. It also sound quiet well as a ambient mic for drums, when you use it as a mono mic.The MXL is good for all cymbals. I love it at the high hat or at the acoustic guitar.

Very Usable

By SoundMan-aHWKr

Comments about MXL 990/993 Studio Package:

Both these mics sound good. the 993 is a bit more full in the low mids compared to an sm81. the 990 has a lot of depth in the low mids as well, but thats good for a larger diaphram. I've used them for a live accoustic set and they sound great. I've also recorded with them double micing an accoustic guitar and they sound pretty good at that. Really great buy for a budget studio or beginner, or even just having a couple extras around.

BIG DAVE

By BIG DAVE-B.LK9

Comments about MXL 990/993 Studio Package:

My wife bought me this microphone package for my name day (Italian). It is heavy duty constructed and comes with a nice case. It is very sensitive, so don't put it too close to your speakers or it will feed back. It also picks up a lot of mouth noise, so don't chew gum. Recording quality is great.

Great sounding budget mics

By CondenserBass

from Acworth, GA

Comments about MXL 990/993 Studio Package:

Been using these mics for a few months now, and they are great for picking up the drums. We use the 990 overhead near the crashes, and the 993 on a stand next to the highhat. Along with another mic on the kick. The drums sound great in the recordings. Don't know about the previous complaints of premature wear, because we haven't been using them long enough, but they sound great for their price.

Very pleased

By Noisy Babies

from Feeding Hills, MA

Comments about MXL 990/993 Studio Package:

If I had no knowledge of cost or brand name I would guess the 990 & 993 were mid to expensive mics based on the sound quality and construction.I bought 2 of each. They both sound great as a stereo pair over a drum set. 990 sounds excellent on vocals...This is out of the box set em up and record(everything flat...great results. I would recommend these to anyone reguardless of what you already own...(I have expensive mics too) The cost makes it a no brainer.
