Great Value and Performance

By James Nickum

from No Virginia

Comments about MXL 990 Large Diaphragm Stereo Condenser Mic:

I like the sound from the stereo mic with it's rich an dtransparent sound, this is a great mic for the price.
Bought this mic a couple of months ago to be used during live practice sessions for our band consisting of guitar, bass, drums and sometimes keyboard. We record in a basement and wanted to record the practice for improving our music. This MXL 990 Stereo mic is very sensitive and captures our performances quite well. I use it with a M Audio Audio Buddy preamp which feeds a TASCAM DR-07mkII digital recorder. This setup works well for generally recording a session; I would not recommend it for anything more than that, not because of the mic, but because it is a compromise in micing a performance. There is a lot of room acoustics that colors the recording and so has other issues.

In another applicatoin this mic also provides a great sound field for vocals as it broadens the presence of the mic giving a wide sense of the recorded voice.

This is a great value and would be a good purchase for anyone wanting some professional results on a budget.

I would recommend this mic for anyone who wants to record a stereo field and not want to setup two distinct mics. I am bery pleased with the results and happy with my purchase.
Good quality the fit an finish are very nice suggesting a product costing much more.
This is a great value offering a great sound for a modest price.

Stereo MXL 990

By Audioss

Comments about MXL 990 Large Diaphragm Stereo Condenser Mic:

MXL 990 Stereo mic has a good clean sound. It's very easy to use. Nice long cable. We use it for drum overhead in the studio and room ambiance for live broadcast/recording. Great quality for the price. The only problem was intermitent hum which I found to be caused by oxidation on the aluminum threads therads of the bottem cover. Cleaned threads with a wire brush and applied GB OX-100 OX-Guard Aluminum wire anti-oxident. No problem.

Stellar!

Comments about MXL 990 Large Diaphragm Stereo Condenser Mic:

I used to work in a recording studio and had access to all sorts of $3000 Neumans, AKG 414s and microphones from companies I had never heard of so I've always felt bummed out with the quality of my personal studio mics, ones that I could actually afford (SM58s, SM57s etc.) I do a great deal of electroacoustic music, processing recorded percussion improvisations then further manipulating them with my PC, but previously did a lot more processing than recording as 1) I could never get my recordings loud enough without compromising clarity and noise floor.Judging from the price of the MXL line, I assumed I was in store for further anguish, but I decided to give this microphone a try -- and wow am I pleasantly surprised! I plugged in this mic and found that I had to turn down the gain *substantially* (I know this argument might simply be dynamic vs. condensers, but I've tried other condensers and not had the same result). I set the microphone in front of a table full of percussion, recorded for a few minutes, and could hear everything perfectly with a terrific frequency response (lows, highs and mids); I even tapped a drum stick on (unamplified) electric guitar strings and could hear it perfectly in the mix without any sort of compression or otherwise processing. The clincher is the stereo aspect. Previously, I've had issues with recreating a suitable stereo field when using panning and two microphones. With this mic, I could walk around the microphone while striking a piece of metal and really hear a surround mix.I am ridiculously pleased with the MXL 990 Stereo... Finally, my creativity isn't stifled by the thought of "this is interesting, but my recordings don't properly represent the performance".

Great buy for the price!

By Orlin

from Pompano Beach, FL

Comments about MXL 990 Large Diaphragm Stereo Condenser Mic:

Purchased the mic and almost immediately had a chance to use it in studio situation miking drum overheads and later acoustic guitar in stereo. I am very happy with the sound I was able to get from this relatively inexpensive mic! Used to have to pay really big bucks for some decent stereo mics, but no more. If you are on a budget and do not work for the likes of Criteria Studios, this one is for you. Very clean sound for overheads, acoustic instruments, and even vocals.
