I purchased two SCM 900?s about a month ago. I was impressed with how quiet they are in terms of their signal to noise ratio. The sound that comes out of them is closely matched to what goes in. They pick up subtle things I never noticed before. The tone is clear and sharp, and they sound professional ? no spectacular additions or subtractions, just honest reproduction. I was curious what was inside of them so I unscrewed the case bottom and slid down the casing to take a look. Inside there is a little 100Hz -6db switch that can be used to cut the bass if a person wants to do that. In looking inside, the electronics seem very well built, and let you know you are getting a lot of microphone for your money. If you decide to take the bottom off to access the bass cut switch inside, be sure to screw it back on tightly to get good ground contact. The casing is used as a ground shield and the microphone will pick up 60 Hz hum if the casing doesn?t make tight contact with the caps that hold it on. If you touch the casing and hear hum, you know that end cap of the casing is not screwed back on tight enoughBeing a poor musician, I used a 3 inch long piece of inch pvc pipe to mount the microphone. I reamed it out a little with some course sandpaper so it would be large enough to screw on the mic bottom, threaded the mic cable through the pvc and plugged it in to the bottom of the mic, then screwed the pvc pipe onto the bottom of the mic. I then pushed pvc pipe with the SCM 900 mounted on top of it into my Shure SM57 swivel mounts. The pvc pipe also fits into many other swivel mounts. Eventually, I plan to buy some shock mounts.

As is the general consensus about this mic, it is cheap and does produce sound. That's about all, though. A 'studio' mic for seventy clams that has any quality sound at all? Not likely. In the long run, it's a wasted seventy, as you could have added a hundred to that and got something with actual quality in the sound.

great vocal

By Anonymous

Comments about Nady SCM 900 Condenser Mic:

Bought this as i wanted somethinfor a better vocal sound without getting close to the mic , and i am impressed much better than the marshall 990 can be disassembled easily, internal shock mounts build quality is very good not as heavy as a mic costing 1000s but very good , less top end makes for a very smooth vocal mic though it is still good for resonater guitar i prefer it for vocal ran through a behringer tube mic 100 preamp this sounds fantastic for the money, very warm a. b. comparison without the preamp it still blows the 990 marshall away not as ragged on the top, of course it is a bigger capsule ,4.5 five on features as a pad maybe 6 db would be nice but hardly need it as less high frequencies it does not feed back bad at all , if you want a large condenser sound with less feedback and more clarity you cannot beat this mic.

A Sound Value

By eddgie

from Portland, Oregon

Comments about Nady SCM 900 Condenser Mic:

I bought one of these mics several years ago and did not expect it to last as long as it did. I have used my SCM-900 heavily for live recording and it has outlasted all of my expectations. It is not a replacement for a Neumann microphone but, the SCM-900 is a very good value for chump change.

Amazing Performance for $49!

Comments about Nady SCM 900 Condenser Mic:

I bought two of these to try out as front of house recording mics for various music groups, (mainly acoustic groups like jazz combos, big bands, concert bands and orchestras). Along with the $19 shock mount I recorded a big band (4 trumpets, 3 trombones, 5 saxes and rhythm section) using these in a near-coincident array about 4 feet in front of the band. I engaged the bass roll off switch (you open the case to access it!) and got a really good "live" sound. In the studio, I tested it out on trumpet, trombone, bass trombone and various percussion getting very good results. I'm going to probably buy more of these to give me more mics for "accent" micing an orchestra or other large group.

Great Sax Mic

By Planman

from New Albany, IN

Comments about Nady SCM 900 Condenser Mic:

I bought a pair of these mics to use in my portable studio. I also have a selection of other mics (MXL, Shure, AKG & ElectroVoice). I normally use them for backing vocals since they have a nice warm tone without the strident top end present on some condensers. I've also used them to mic the body of acoustic guitar for the same reasons then balanced it with a small diaphram condenser for the lower neck. However, recently I had to mic an alto sax and I tried all the mics in my case that I thought would give good results and the SCM 900 gave the richest, most balanced sound out of all of them. I later used the mic on a live gig at a club where the sound man there had quite a few reservations about using a condenser mic on stage due to their sensitivity, but after hearing the SCM 900 he raved about the clean full sound and since this mic has a somewhat reduced high end freq. response (16,000 K) feedback problems were practically eliminated. If you are selective about what you use this mic for, it's a great mic for the price.

Great Mic, Great Price

By Nate Teikari

from Ashburn, VA

Comments about Nady SCM 900 Condenser Mic:

I've used this mic many times when self-producing demos for my band. When recording my band, I try to make things sound as professional as possible, so I'm picky with sound quality. The quality of sound reproduction with this mic is outstanding. You can get better, but for a mic at this price, and with as good as the sound is, you can't get a better deal.

Unusual quality for the price...

By descallyjr

from St. Louis, Missouri

Comments about Nady SCM 900 Condenser Mic:

I put this mic on a $25 shock mount, ran it thru the $30 ART pre-amp, used a pop filter and was simply blown away by the quality. I sing loud and this mic can take it well. You don't have to be poor to appreciate the price/quality ratio here! Very well done folks.

Nice all-purpose recording mic

By mando bill

from Little Rock

Comments about Nady SCM 900 Condenser Mic:

I've had this Nady SCM 900 about two years and have put a lot of hours into it. Not the widest range mic out there, but it's a good, warm, natural sounding mic. I've recorded voice, acoustic guitar, upright bass and mandolin with it, all with good results.

Great Cheap mic

By Fredo

from Delaware

Comments about Nady SCM 900 Condenser Mic:

This is a great mic especially for the price, very crisp, not as warm as my AT4040 or my AT4033 but for the price difference, Ill buy a few more of these. I do a great deal of vocal work, with singing groups from contemporary a cappella to jazz. None come close for the price of this mic!

Good First Mic

By Lestat-x3UZq

from Tempe, AZ

Comments about Nady SCM 900 Condenser Mic:

If you're looking for a good first condenser mic then you can't go wrong here. However, this mic's construction is rather poor. The sound quality is very good for the price. Would I buy it again? Probably not, I would just spend $100 and get a better mic. If it's your first condenser then go for it. Just remember you need 48v phantom power. Look into a Behringer preamp (Ultragain Mic100 is a good one to pair with this mic).
