Sennheiser

A studio-quality condenser priced for the home studio.

The Sennheiser MK 4 is a large-diaphragm, true condenser microphone designed for professional studio recordings. Featuring fine resolution and outstanding sound quality, the MK 4 offers excellent value for the price, making it an ideal choice for professional project studios and home recordists. It features a 1" true condenser capsule based on the acoustics of the e 965 high-end vocal mic that’s optimized for recording. Made in Germany, the MK 4’s transducer is manufactured in the same Level 5 clean room (medical level) as all high-end Sennheiser and Neumann condenser capsules.

Sturdy large-diaphragm model
The MK 4 has a large 1" diaphragm precisely spattered with 24-carat gold. Its sturdy metal housing with nickel finish, and elastically mounted capsule, make the microphone tough enough for even the most demanding recording situations. The internal capsule mount provides excellent suppression of handling noise, which can be further improved by the use of an elastic shockmount. The open front of the suspension mount enables the MK 4 to be positioned close to the sound source. The microphone has a maximum sound pressure level of 140dB, and extremely low self-noise (10dB, A-weighted).

The highly versatile MK 4 is great for vocals, acoustic guitar, and grand piano, as well as strings and wind instruments. And, in numerous field trials, it has proven to be an excellent microphone for guitar amplifiers, drums, and percussion. The MK 4 comes with a microphone clip and a protective pouch.

Optional MKS 4 Shockmount (not included - see# H71114)

The optional MKS 4 shockmount (not included - see #H71114) is specifically built to hold a large-diaphragm MK 4 microphone from Sennheiser. It has an elastic suspension with an open ring which allows the mic to be positioned close to the sound source.

Comments about Sennheiser MK4 Large Diaphragm Studio Condenser Microphone:

Our band Emerald Rose has had their own studio for many years. We used this mic on our latest cd, Sunwise, recording harmony vocals, pennywhistle and Irish bodhran. Best mic we have ever owned. It made the experience wonderful. Having used Neumann mics before we were skeptical of its hype, but this mic blew us away. Best buy we have made in a long time! You will love it!

Comments about Sennheiser MK4 Large Diaphragm Studio Condenser Microphone:

This mic is transperant and delivers studio quality sound. I had a V63M with a RK-12 capsule which is warmer but not as clear (like a SE2200). In my opinion a male voice should not have added warmth anyway. I heard that the MK4 is similar to the NT-1A. I had a used NT-1A and wasn't clean like this one. I suspect the AKG214 is good too but more expensive. The MK4 delivers a faithful reproduction on my voice which sounds good in the mix. My problem is that I wasn't getting good vocal quality before that. It doesn't come with a shock mount but the rubberized mount acts like one. I don't agree that it's good for a guitar amp cabinet and I don't have a verdict with an acoustical guitar yet. For that I prefer to use my AKG420. The MK4 has a slightly hyped treble. I tone it down one notch with the free EQ from Kuassa in Reaper. I got a good discount on this and am happy. So this will be my vocal mic until I do a significant upgrade to something else. Finding a mic has been an expensive proposition but I wouldn't cave into getting something extremely expensive even though it might have been more economical in the long run if I had.

Comments about Sennheiser MK4 Large Diaphragm Studio Condenser Microphone:

After listening to some audio comparisons online, and testing a few different mics at a Guitar Center, I went with this mic over an Audio Technica 4040, and a Sterling Audio mic. This one didn't sound as scooped as the Sterling u87 clone, and while the AT had a great midrange warmth, this one sounded more balanced and like a Neumann that I was looking for. I knew the more balanced sound would help it do better with more applications. I don't regret the choice at all!! Best mic in it's price range, I also think it's competitive with more expensive mics too!

Since using it in my studio on vocals, acoustic guitars and as a drum overhead, I've used it live as a drum overhead too, and it was amazing!!! I love the cardioid pattern that helped it to not pickup everything on stage!

Comments about Sennheiser MK4 Large Diaphragm Studio Condenser Microphone:

I went into my local GC to pick up an MXL4000 and was shown in this beauty's direction being told it is an affordable version of a Neumann mic. It was only a 50dollar difference so I went for it. Just did a quick cover to check it out and I was FLOORED. It was so dang clear. This is a professional mic at a steal of a price. I hope you found your way to this mic's page before going out to make your next purchase. BUY THIS MIC!

Throw out all of your Budget mics. This is the winner!

Comments about Sennheiser MK4 Large Diaphragm Studio Condenser Microphone:

A true Gem. A quality German made microphone at a bargain bin price. Smooth with no brittle top end. Very sensitive, so isolate your vocal, etc from your computer. It picks up even the slightest of hum. The MK4 will be replaceing my Rode NTK Tube as a main vocal mic.

          Good Buy!

Comments about Sennheiser MK4 Large Diaphragm Studio Condenser Microphone:

All I can really say is WOW! I purchased this mic just yesterday and I was amazed at the quality of both how it's made and how it sounds. I upgraded from an MXL 990 so you can imagine the difference of sound. Everything just sounds so crisp and clear, very rich and full. I record music so I need a good microphone to help vocals stand out, which is exactly what I got.
